- Ω -
I noticed my PC turned 4 years old two days ago. The thing is, it's cruising right along and I see no reason to upgrade or replace. I know a lot of you guys probably have bigger and faster setups, but I'm wondering if for non-gamers (like me) we've finally reached a plateau. RickR
Definitely a plateau, even for gamers. Moore's Law died a long time ago...probably with when SSD drives became cheap and plentiful. At this point, I replace only if I find something smaller/quieter/more-efficient. Or is new enough to run Win 11 and get the latest security patches after 2025. My main PC is 1 year old. Garage is about a week old 🙂. My wife's about 3 years old, but the replacement is ready as soon as she can get her work VPN installed. BUT all were purchased used, so I'm not sure their true age. This is literally where I am at as well, outside of emergency maintenance or repairs I am pretty satisfied with our current Desktop/laptop set ups with everything running well with most current Windows 11. - Ω - and RickR 2 Quote I am Rob aka MaximumRD aka OldSchoolRetroGamer and THIS is my world http://about.me/maximumrd "For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. Windows 11, that's another reason I'm not too keen to upgrade, I have multiple programs that are working quite well that I've paid for over the years that apparently will NOT work under Windows 11. For security patches and stuff I'm sure the 3rd party replacements will work if Microsoft wants to abandon Windows 10. greenween
10 years old. Still works good enough for me though. 🙂 RickR, - Ω - and Smell Dawg 3 Quote "Better to be king for a night than schmuck for a lifetime."
RickR
I don't think it matters to anyone but myself, but I have had zero compatibility issues with Windows 11. As far as I'm concerned, everything I had under Windows 10 works exactly the same in Win 11.
TrekMD
My current computer is only a few months old. It replaced my 15 year old computer! I'm on Windows 11, since it is a new machine. The only thing I've done is use an program called Start11, which lets you customize the Start Menu to whatever you like. I make mine look like Windows 10. I absolutely detest the Windows 11 start menu. - Ω - and RickR 1 1 Quote 🖖 Going to the final frontier, gaming...
RickR
I kind of like the "pinned" section of the Win 11 start menu. Although I admit it takes a while to get used to it.
TrekMD
I couldn't get used to it, so all of my computers with Windows 11 have Start11 installed. 🙂 RickR 1 Quote 🖖 Going to the final frontier, gaming...
Smell Dawg
Wilikers, the daily driver home laptop is is jussst over 13 years old now. I think about replacing it, well, basically all the time. But so far it continues to chug along reasonably fine and, outside of gaming, still does its job. socrates63
I got a new-to-me desktop PC a couple of months ago. There's a local gamer/reseller who refurbs/rebuilds computers and sells them time to time. I have not been following computer hardware development for a long time. He said that the specs are good enough to run the latest games albeit at a lower quality setting. That sounded good enough for me since I don't play the latest games. For work, I only need the basics. For play, I want to go through my Steam and GOG backlog that are all old to very old games. Even the more recent games are not computer resource heavy games. This box is running Win10 Pro on a Ryzen Threadripper 1920X 12-Core Processor, 3850 Mhz with 64GB RAM. I was thinking of updating to Win11 to get support for WiFi 6E since I recently upgraded my wifi and it supports that. But with a new USB wifi adapter for the PC, the connection speed is great so I probably won't bother updating to Win11 just for the wifi. - Ω -, RickR, Sabertooth and 2 others
Sabertooth
My personal laptop is 4 years old this month. It is a Razer Blade Stealth 13 and still runs most everything well. When I start getting performance issues, I'll change up. I expect it has another few years. - Ω -, Smell Dawg, RickR and 1 other
MistaMaddog
I'm still running my PC w/ i5 & 4Gb RAM from 10 years ago and it still runs real good. It's true I should max my memory to 32Gb but there's way too many important things to worry about like bills and groceries. ;( Still it's my daily driver running Windows 10 and my other computer is a RPi 4 for remote work and some retrocomputing. Most of my Steam games are low resource indy games along with the older stuff off GOG so I'm good for now. But if I can upgrade, I'd get a Ryzen CPU/mobo combo that cost the same as buying a new mini gaming PC but will fit in my tank tower case and use the same parts as my current PC. Plus I like to work on home networking to stream PC games to my gaming room where the Xbox is w/o dealing with the pains of using WiFi. - Ω -, RickR, Sabertooth and 3 others
CrossBow
Mine is now 5 years old and it really doesn't seem it was that long ago that I built it. But there it is. I think for most stuff I do it is plenty decent still. But, I will say it isn't able to run most of the newer games with high settings unless I drop down to 1440p or even 1080p if I want to use any RT stuff. It still does a decent job of rendering videos when needed but I can see that I will have to look at replacing it out in the next few years for sure. BTW I'm running an i7 9700K that runs at a constant 4.9ghz on all cores with 32GB of RAM and 1TB NVME for the boot drive and main applications drive, while I still use a pair of 7500rpm WD black caviar drives in a stripe array along with another set of SSDs in a stripe array.
