POPEYE with Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall

I’ve been wanting to see the Popeye movie with Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall. I haven’t seen it in decades, but I remember being disappointed by it and thinking it’s boring. I was hoping that was just me. Red Letter Media seemed to feel the same way.

Curious if there are any Popeye fans here who think this movie has gotten a bad rap?

I was about to say “It’s Robin Williams, it can’t be all that bad of a movie” but then I remembered watching Toys and feeling the same way about that movie also.

My opinion is the same as yours.  I haven't seen it since I saw it in the theater.  I remember being disappointed.  It was dark and dingy.  The action sequences hit the mark of being funny and entertaining, but the rest of the movie was pretty blah.

I should watch it again to see if that opinion holds.

Perhaps a Robin Williams movie fest is in order.  There's another I've been meaning to catch that I haven't seen.  A Spielberg movie starring Tom Hanks with a Robin Williams role too...but I can't remember the name at the moment.

My exact feelings...

It wasn't the fault of Robin Williams though, Robert Altman was just the wrong type of director for this type of movie and the cast & crew didn't like working with him so of course it ended up being a disaster.

Interestingly, the movie set is still around and now a tourist atraction called Popeye Village.
