The Best and the Worst Sega Master System Games

I have two rubrics for this: What was available to me in the US market growing up, and what was available in international markets after Sega shifted their focus to the Genesis in the US market.

Certainly Sonic the Hedgehog and other Genesis-era games were some of the greatest Master System games ever made. Those were (and remain) largely popular in the South American market, but the Master System was already gone from stores here and I was collecting the Sega Master System as a classic video game system by the time those were released internationally.

I look at Master System through two lenses:

  • What was available to me in the US market during its retail availability
  • What I can get now, internationally

Master System has a ton of awesome games that were overshadowed by the NES when they were released. Out Run, After Burner, R-Type, Ghostbusters, and I think Hang On is really cool to play.

Graphically those games were far surpassed by later releases that we didn't get here, and I didn't even know were available until much later.

"Worst games" is YouTube influencer nonsense for clicks. I don't let myself get caught up in "worst games ever" or "games that ruined my childhood" clickbait, I try to focus on the positive and enjoy the games I like playing.
