Coleco Chameleon (formerly Retro VGS)

Atari Creep

Recommended Posts

At least they appear to have gotten the pricing right this time around. It looks like he's using a SNES controller? I feel like the first time around failure isn't going to do them well this second time around and while I didn't particularly care for the RVGS name the first time, I'm not sure I like the Coleco name being used this time either.

Console naming aside, the second game out of the few shown videos is the only one that looks remotely interesting to me and that's only because it looks similar to Golden Axe. It begs the question though, why. If I wanted to play Golden Axe, that's exactly what I would get. Not to mention, it may very well be possible for me to obtain an actual Golden Axe arcade machine for a few hundered dollars.

With all the hoopla around the casing colors, etc, I'm really surprised they didn't show one in a ruby red or royal blue transparent casing instead of just the dull black. Then again, that logo against any color of casing just looks like hell imo.

I'm skeptical on the hardware this is being ran on but that's their fault because of the lack of real prototype or hardware the first time around so I feel like they need to be less secretive of the hardware and show us the guts to prove its legit. But that only solves one part of the problem. The bastardization of the Coleco name on the Atari Jaguar casing is another issue altogether. It can be overlooked. Games is the real issue I see with this.

Why not take the time, money and effort into releasing something of that of an expanded cart for the already existing Jaguar or a modernized Jaguar on FPGA since new boards can't purchased anymore fixing hardware bugs, giving us exclusive shells, and expanding things like the RAM to give homebrewers something fun to tinker with as a Jaguar follow-up of sorts for fun. Even that seems like it would fare better or stand a better chance than this but I don't own the molds nor do I have the money or time to invest in such.

I still seem to be missing something lol......There was a post on fb were I asked about the coleco and Intellivision games shown and how would they be played without a keypad? The response was enough keys could be mapped on the controller for those functions. I suggested that was kind of a sucky alternative. Today I read a post suggesting the inty and coleco games that require a keypad won't be on the console......uhm, isn't that like.......the MAJORITY OF THEM??????? Ugh the usual answers that are not winning me over........

well perhaps they will work on a usb colecovision and intellivision controller that plugs into the console?  if that is the case, then you could possibly use them on your computer for emulators as well :)  hmmmmm.... makes sense to me.   Lets see what info there is when the kickstarter launches, there are many rumors flying around out there.

I'm not going to speculate on what is under the hood at the moment, but I'm sure it is a work in progress so I never expected them to show a finished product so soon. And in the end, it will be the final product that matters and I highly doubt it will turn out to be a re-purposed SNES in a Jaguar shell.

I will say this: I think the new price points they are mentioning are great!  This is a big improvement over the previous campaign. I would be very tempted to go for the kickstarter if my finances allowed me.

I just watched those videos MaximumRD posted and watched them twice. It's hard not to wince when you see it. To me it looks like they didn't have their board ready for the NY Toy Fair and knew things would go into a tail spin if they didn't show up with the product as promised, so they went into panic mode and made it work with a SNES Jr board stuffed in that Jag shell. My guess is there's a real board out there being worked on but it's behind schedule. Even if it was the real deal they need to be at trade shows with pre production units, not breadboards.

This has gone from Comedy to Tragedy. This thing is slipping away. :atari_jaguar:

And that is far more disappointing for me. I had zero hopes for the console. I wanted those real bad.

Me too!

Oh gotcha. Hmm.. Are the Retro VGS guys involved in that project too? I think that's probably a different team. Or maybe the Coleco holdings guys were trying to farm it out of China and it didn't work.

Nope didn't involve the Retro VGS guys at all. The holdings company simply licences out the Coleco name, so I'm guessing whoever planned on making them backed out at some point. Perhaps the project ending up being too expensive or perhaps the less than desired sales numbers of the CV Flashback scared them away.

Its still in the works, Chris Cardillo is working on this for River West Brands.  He just came on board not long ago to handle the Coleco brand and is working on getting the brand back out there.
