Doctor Octagon Posted July 24, 2014 Report Posted July 24, 2014 SCORE! It's our first contest! July 30 is Howard Scott Warshaw Day. To celebrate, we're throwing a high-score competition for Yars' Revenge and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Post the highest score in Yars’ Revenge or E.T. and win a brand new sealed copy of the game, complete with a collector-quality crystal clear box protector! Post scores for both games for a chance to win a bonus prize - the highest combined score of both games will win a new 2600-style Joystick! Contest ends Monday, August 4th. CONTEST RULES Eligibility: Anyone can join in. All players are welcome! Play Rules: Games may be played on real Atari hardware or emulation, using any joystick or keyboard, following the official game settings delineated below. Fair Play: Players should play fairly, be honest, and have fun! It goes without saying that no use of cheats, cartridge frying, emulation enhancements, photoshop, or any other unfair advantage is allowed. Everybody hates a cheater. Scoring: Your scores must have been made between July 23, 2014 and the end of this contest. Posting old scores is not permitted. Submissions: Scores must be posted in this forum, along with a photo of your score for verification. The deadline for posting high scores is 9am (PST) Monday, August 4th, 2014. E.T. SETTINGS Left Difficulty: B Right Difficulty: A Game Variation: 1 (All humans present in game.) YARS SETTINGS Left Difficulty: A Right Difficulty: A Game Variation: 2 (Normal) According to the manual, this is the “normal” game, with two alternating shield configurations, plus a Destroyer Missile, and a Swirl traveling at the speed set at Difficulty A PRIZES HIGHEST SCORE - YARS’ REVENGE The highest posted Yars’ Revenge score in this forum will win a brand new sealed copy of Yars’ Revenge for the Atari 2600. The game is sealed in the box, and comes with a crystal clear box protector to keep your game nice. This is the original 1981 release and it goes without saying the Yars' Revenge DC Comic book is included inside the sealed package. HIGHEST SCORE - E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL The highest posted E.T. score in this forum will win a brand new sealed copy of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600. The game is sealed in the box, and comes with a crystal clear box protector to keep your game nice. It should be noted that this copy of E.T., while new and shrink wrapped, does have some smushyness as the box is partially caving in on the back. Nevertheless, it's sealed as new, and it's yours should you get the high score! HIGHEST COMBINED SCORE A player who submits the highest combined score of both games will win a brand new 2600-style Joystick! The combined score is derived from the sum of your Yars’ score added to your E.T. score. To submit a combined score you must post both scores simultaneously within the same post, and clearly state your combined high score. TO OUR WINNERS: Should you be the high score champ, we’ll send you a PM asking for your mailing address. We'll ship your prize overnight via FedEx Air so you will receive your prize the very next morning! Unfortunately we cannot ship to PO Boxes. If you don't win this time, don't give up. This is only the first of MANY contests to come! GOOD LUCK PLAYERS!
Doctor Octagon Posted July 24, 2014 Author Report Posted July 24, 2014 A CLOSER LOOK AT THE PRIZES, IN DETAIL:
MaximumRD Posted July 24, 2014 Report Posted July 24, 2014 Nice prizes, awesome idea for a contest! Sadly I have neither the time and even more so I lack the skill so I wont be participating BUT FYI I did post and share the details in several Classic Gaming / Atari focused Facebook group, my Google+ and Atariage status. Good luck to all involved and thanks for the contest. I am Rob aka MaximumRD aka OldSchoolRetroGamer and THIS is my world http://about.me/maximumrd "For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday." - M. Bison
Justin Posted July 24, 2014 Report Posted July 24, 2014 Thanks for the support MaximumRD! You are too awesome. Good luck to everyone!
Fire_In_The_Valley Posted July 24, 2014 Report Posted July 24, 2014 Question: according to the rules I can submit scores for ET and Yar's Revenge, and even if neither of those are the top score, if their combined score is the highest then I can still win the joystick. Is that right?
Doctor Octagon Posted July 24, 2014 Author Report Posted July 24, 2014 Yes! It sounds more complicated than it is. Someone with a high score in one game might have a much lower score in another. The person who gets the high score in ET might not have a very good score in Yars. You could get the combined high score, and not set a high score in either of the individual games. We think that's worth a prize, and we're doing it this way to give more people a chance at winning.
Fire_In_The_Valley Posted July 24, 2014 Report Posted July 24, 2014 People are starting to ask a lot for E.T. on ebay, especially in new condition like this. Really cool prize! That Yar's Revenge looks pristine. I'm digging that new 2600 joystick I really need a good one, all of my joysticks are worn out
Zoyx Posted July 25, 2014 Report Posted July 25, 2014 I can roll Yar's Revenge... what are the rules on rolling the score?
Doctor Octagon Posted July 25, 2014 Author Report Posted July 25, 2014 Good question Zoyx. I needed to post about this. RULES FOR ROLLING THE SCORE Rolling Counts: We count rolling scores. If you can roll the score, keep on playing as far as you can possibly go. Keep track of your rolls and post your best score. There are no bonuses in this contest, we are playing on raw scores. Be Honest: We're operating on the honor system. I trust that you are all submitting verifiable scores, and we'll be able to spot a Photoshopped image. We're playing for prizes so honesty matters. Dishonest players will be disqualified. Photos & Recording: Posting a YouTube video of your game goes a long way to substantiating a rolled score. A photo of your score is all that's required, but we strongly encourage recording your gameplay if you can. Especially if you have ridiculous skills and can claim to have rolled the game eight times. We want our contests to be open to everyone, but it's important to be open and honest about scoring. If there are questions about rules, game settings, or submitting scores, please feel free to ask them in this forum. This is all for fun so I'm sure it'll go smoothly. Good luck!
DeLorean Posted July 27, 2014 Report Posted July 27, 2014 Hey guys, just a reminder, the forums have only been open for about a week and this is the first time we've had a contest. So there will be things we figure out along the way. As long as we're all having fun it's all good. And if you don't win this time don't give up, there will be plenty more contests in the future.
