Atari 5200 Guy
Good to see you are still alive and well, Max. Glad to have you back. While it wasn't a "dumpster" for electronic recycling in a place I lived over a decade ago I took the trash out to the apartment's dumpster and found a complete computer system in there. It wasn't dirty, it didn't smell, so I grabbed it up thinking if it did work I could return it, right? It fired right up, I didn't have to do anything. It almost looked like it had never been used and Windows had not finished installing. By now that computer would have been about 10 years old, then it might have been about a year old if that. It was an e-Machine with AMD processor. Really nice. I just can't believe someone threw it out. I ended up using it until I moved out of state in 2009. Some of the things people throw out is amazing. I don't normally dumpster dive but seeing that computer and been needing a new one ... yea ... I dove for it. Justin and MaximumRD

Justin
Coolest video ever! GREAT find Rob! That's just incredible! I always thought one day you'd find some cool power strips in the recycling or something, but it's amazing that you found something this awesome of a retro gaming collectable! Does video exist of your walk out to the recycling bins and making your big discovery? MaximumRD

I always thought one day you'd find some cool power strips in the recycling or something, but it's amazing that you found something this awesome of a retro gaming collectable! Does video exist of your walk out to the recycling bins and making your big discovery? Sadly, no I did not have my camera with me, both old and new don't hold the charge they once did and I do not always have them plugged in and ready as I mentioned I literally checked it as an after thought. I did make a video yesterday when I first came up stairs etc, but it was using my older camera (and by good I mean well at least better than my other one ) but after I calmed down and re-watched it today I thought it better to just do over. This video was better for sure though I admit my attempt to power it up and my disappointment when it did not work initially might have been entertaining. But yeah, I was certainly surprised, the majority of residence here are 50+ so I find a lot of weird things but thinking now we might have (or had ) someone more like me here somewhere ? I am certainly convinced to try and ave a peek in more often. For all my little gadgets and accessories I been finding perfectly good AA and AAA batteries! Even rechargeable, enough to keep things going without me having to pick any up, also universal remotes, I will never need another! Justin
I would have loved to see that moment when you found something as cool as this in the recycling bin! I have a couple of packages I've been meaning to send you for the past year. Ever since I last moved I've been taking a break from digging through boxes etc. and have been putting it off. After the holidays I'll get some stuff together and send it your way, it may make for another nice unboxing video for you. Keatah
That's crazy man. I totally dislike pacman these days, too hard and I *still* suck at dot-eater games, but wanted one of those when I was a kid. It's also great to see that VFD displays seem to have great longevity even if they can develop wear over time. I consider them close cousins to crt phosphors because they rely on cathode emission. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_fluorescent_display MaximumRD

From clock radios and early watches and calculators to of course a variety of early handheld and portable video games it certainly stands out! I found it interesting how they manged to make playable and fun games within the limitations of the VFD technology. My understanding though is the tech was more difficult and costly to produce which is why it was later replaced with LCD. They were certainly interesting for their time though and the bright and vibrant color is what really attracted me. MaximumRD
How cool as that! Thanks much appreciated. One thing I love about this forum is the special vibe and feeling of "community" no other site gives me. With that I would like to show THESE videos I just came across and want to share, now I did NOT create this particular video but it is by a user Daniel Bienvenu aka Newcoleco a amazing ColecoVision Homebrew programmer. We do not communicate much these days but back when I started on Youtube and he was more active on youtube and forums in general he often shouted me out, I reviewed one of his games and we would shout each other out back and forth. He certainly made some surprise videos that always amazed me he took the time to do just as a favour to me. Flashback 2009, my favourite times on Youtube and back when it felt more like a "community" making friends etc. I was even part of Newcoleco's "Memorable Youtube Moments of 2009", this was early on before I had many subscribers yet people who appreciated my humble videos reached out. !!!!! NOTE THE VIDEO DOES NOT ALLOW EMBEDDING SO ONCE YOU CLICK IT YOU WILL SEE THE OPTION TO WATCH IT ON YOUTUBE !!!!!!!!!!!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyIlbAJQLD0 In THIS one he created an ANIMATION from my Tag Response Blooper Video (The phone rang to deliver a package as I was filming) to me this was one of the nicest and collect things a fellow youtuber ever created for me. He spent 10 hours on it! Notice the Colecovision to the right and the "phone" I pick up is the controller. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWM2fUFSDkA Justin, The Professor and DeLorean 3 Quote I am Rob aka MaximumRD aka OldSchoolRetroGamer and THIS is my world http://about.me/maximumrd "For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. MaximumRD
Tiny "Game Room" in Grand Hotel - Sunpeaks Resort. Better Late Than Never ! Last August 12 - 14- We went to Sunpeaks resort for the 7th Annual Sun Peaks Retro Concert Weekend. Upon checking in to the Grand Hotel did my usual walking around and discovered this quiet and empty little arcade so I just had to do this quick video. I had forgotten all about it as I tend to do once we return from a trip and the excitement wears off. But I was just going through my playlist of various arcades I had filmed when it popped into my head "Hey wait a second, did I ever upload the little Game Room I discovered that weekend at Sunpeaks?" WELL NO I NEVER DID so here it is. nosweargamer
Nice tour. The last hotel with a game room I had, had about 8 claw machines and nothing else. Bummer. The Atari Area 51 game is legit, however the cabinets for that one and the Capcom one are interesting since they are Bally Midway cabinets. Atari 5200 Guy
I use to have a first-gen iPad and I loved it. The only thing I didn't like about it was that I couldn't take it outside or use it in areas where there was too much sunlight. You couldn't see anything on the screen unless you were in darker areas. Forget taking it outside even on cloudy days. But it did work well and I enjoyed the apps that Apple had for it that were either free or cost very little. They just worked. Simple as that. I think you will like it once you get use to it and the Apple way of things. For me the hardware is good but I've moved on...I prefer Android, Windows, and Ubuntu Linux. Don't get me wrong. If I had the opportunity to get an iMac Mini, iPad, or anything like that from Apple I would as they are good products. I just have no need for it when there are similar items on the market that is more cost-efficient. That is an awesome thing you got, Maximum, and I know you guys will enjoy it. I got the Bookshelf and a few free books with mine...one of which was an old Winnie The Pooh book. MaximumRD

I got the Bookshelf and a few free books with mine...one of which was an old Winnie The Pooh book. Hmmm did my first real testing today. Being the iPAD 3 with retina display I can only assume it can attain higher brightness levels. Low to Medium was practically invisible on this sunny day as expected but setting it around 75-80% brightness allowed me to shoot with no issue at all. I just shot a bit inside then walked a bit around the Condo grounds and yeah as soon as I stepped outside I had to turn it up a lot but that said seemed to work quite well. Today was my first day doing any real testing, getting use to actually holding this surprisingly heavy tablet. Was pretty cool out fortunately I have gloves that have these little finger tips on thumb and 3 fingers that actually work with touch screens. Just little private clips I am uploading for testing, I want to be fairly comfortable shooting with the iPAD before I start uploading public videos again. As I suspected the camera on this model is not quite on par with my old SONY BLOGGIE, image stabilization was definitely better but that said I been shooting video for so long I can be pretty steady when I try, actually the weight and size of the iPad seem to almost force me to take more time and use a steady hand anyway. The iPAD definitely has better sound though. So my testing so far indicates I should be pretty good with it soon and most importantly above all else comparing the two the iPAD is dependable and I do not have to worry about it crapping out on me during filming as my Bloggie seems to be doing more and more, the iPAD just does what I want it to do so that is much more encouraging and motivating for me to make youtube videos. Yes I will always consider myself more a Windows / Android guy at heart but as you touched on I was given an incredible offer and I simply needed the device for shooting videos, no not something I'd have chosen for myself but as they say "Beggars can't be choosers" so I reconsidered and accepted and now I am glad I did because as another person commented elsewhere at least if I still have a complaint or gripe about the platform I can at least speak from a place of hands on experience. But really overall I am very happy, it is certainly better than any hardware I already owned, LOVE my cheap import ANDROID tablets for emulation and gaming and the odd browsing but to say the camera are utter SHIT is putting it nicely, on top of that with my good old SONY BLOGGIE starting to crap out on me well, I am very thankful to have the iPAD 3, I do try to make the most of what I have and this is not different.
