Scores must be achieved between April 16th through April 30th, 2019. Screen captures are not allowed as they are easily manipulated for falsified scores. Multiple submissions are permitted. The player with the highest score at the end of the competition is the victor!

ELIGIBILITY: Anyone can join in. All players are welcome!

PLAY RULES: Games may be played on real hardware, Flashback or emulation, using any controller or keyboard, following rules and game settings as delineated in the Squad Challenge. Enhancements, rewinds and hacked versions of this game are not allowed.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Default. Press RUN to start.

FAIR PLAY: Players should play fairly, be honest, and have fun! Falsified scores will result in your immediate removal from the site. It goes without saying that no use of cheats, hacks, cartridge frying, enhancements, rewinds, Photoshop, subterfuge, or any other unfair advantage is allowed. Everybody hates a cheater.

MESSAGE: Welcome to our 57th Squad Challenge! THIS 💥 GAME 💥 IS 💥 HARD! Absolutely unforgiving and so much fun. This time we're digging deeper into the TurboGrafx-16 game library and exploring a genre that shined on the TurboGrafx: SHMUPS. To RickR, Atari Creep, and others of you who are just joining the world of TurboGrafx, I highly recommend checking out this game, especially if you enjoy arcade shooters. TurboGrafx-16 did shoot 'em ups right! There are so many great ones to pick from on TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine, and today we're playing one of the very best. I think you'll agree that the TurboGrafx port of R-TYPE outshines the other home ports of the time. The graphics and sound really give this game a boost. Here's a PRO TIP: If you're playing R-TYPE on original hardware, now is the time to make the most of those rapid-fire Turbo Switches on your TurboPad controller. Explore the different rapid-fire settings and find the strategy that works best for you. ROM and Instruction Manual are provided below. Good luck to everyone playing!

Is there a way to see my high score? I think I got 71,700, but as soon as I lost my last ship, I couldn't see my score anymore.

This happened to me too.  I die (quickly), cannot pause and then it plays a jingle and asks whether I want to continue.  I had no time to grab my phone and take a shot.  I'm playing via Mednafen.

I guess what I can do, aside from recording a video, is just pause the game when I have a satisfactorily high enough score and take a picture, then, if I get much farther, take another.

They used to have this game at the roller skating rink in the town where I grew up, along with Snow Bros., Afterburner II, and Gauntlet. I only played it a couple times, though. I realized how quickly this game would eat up your quarters!

EDIT: Oh yeah,  they had Ms. Pac-man too.

If you are emulating I know on OpenEmu there is a screen pause feature. I just leave the mouse over the screen so that task bar is always there and as soon as I see the GAME OVER screen I hit pause right away.

Thats how I got around that though I can't seem to get a better score than last run. LOL

Hope this helps.

Don't just watch TV, PLAY IT!

Hey guys, I missed this issue when I was testing out R-TYPE before publishing it as our Squad Challenge. I always check for issues like these first, but I also feel wrong about playing the game too much and getting all that practice time in before announcing the game. I like to participate in High Score Squad with you guys and never give myself an unfair advantage. This is why arcade games should always have a Scoreboard screen where you can see your score and enter your initials!

If capturing your score becomes too much of a problem we'll implement an "Honor Code" rule - for this one game only -  to allow you to post your high score even if you weren't able to take a picture in time. I would hate for one of you to have a really great run and then not be able to use that score. You guys gotta know what your score is though and it has to be accurate. Try your best to pause right at the end to take a picture first so this doesn't become a big problem. That adds another layer of skill and chance to the challenge too.. "should I pause and take a pic or keep going?"

Good luck everyone! R-TYPE is brutal and I hope you're all enjoying the TurboGrafx-16 port!

Only if this gets to the point where we're left with no choice. Try your best to capture your scores and we'll go from there.

Can we submit a score that was achieved after the use of a continue, or is the intention that we start from the beginning each time?

Sure, continues are allowed. It resets your score to 0 though.
