They have perfectly good wiring... but what about transferring those cables to a different set of sticks? It could open up some amazing possibilities. I just wonder the length of wire there is to work with internally, and whether they used connectors (like Atari) or soldered the wires in. There are lots of different options really, you could put better joysticks on each line, or you could make a double stick job like you said with two buttons, which could be really cool for a tank game, or you could have a single stick with two buttons. I suck with gamepads, but I'm thinking my portable system would enjoy using one... especially if your next game makes use of it.
