Atari VCS
Controller: MODERN CONTROLLER / CLASSIC CONTROLLER / PLAYER'S CHOICE
Difficulty Level: Normal Game
Play on: Real Hardware ✔
Squad Challenge ends 11:59 pm PST March 31, 2022

Objective

Play for the highest possible score using the difficulty settings defined in the challenge. Post a photo or YouTube video of your score in this thread. Scores must be achieved between March 1st through March 31, 2022. Your high score submission should be the "Last Score" following the "The End" screen.  Screen captures are not allowed as they are more easily manipulated for falsified scores. Multiple submissions are permitted. The player with the highest score at the end of the competition is the victor!

Eligibility

This is a Club VCS Exclusive Challenge. All Club VCS players are welcome!

Play Rules

Games may be played on real Atari VCS hardware. Choosing which controller to play on is part of formulating your strategy. Enhancements, rewinds and hacked versions of this game are not allowed.

Difficulty Level

We are playing Missile Command: Recharged using the default difficulty setting. Spending points to power-up your abilities is a part of the game.  Players are encouraged to strategically power-up to increase their scores!

Fair Play

Your integrity is everything. Players should play fairly, be honest, and have fun! Falsified scores will result in your immediate removal from the site. It goes without saying that we will not allow cheats, hacks, cartridge frying, enhancements, rewinds, deceitful photo manipulation, subterfuge, or any other unfair advantage. Everybody hates a cheater.

Message

Welcome to our first Club VCS Recharged Squad Challenge!!! For this challenge we're playing Missile Command: Recharged! Released in 2020 in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the original, Missile Command: Recharged is a reimagining of the beloved Atari arcade classic. Survive wave after wave of enemy attacks in this fast-paced, arcade action game. Players must defend their bases by shooting down an endless barrage of missiles hailing from the sky. Launch counter-missiles to protect your base and target powerups to gain an edge at critical moments. The first of Atari's Recharged series, Missile Command: Recharged effectively set the stage for things to come.  It takes the basic premise of the arcade original, adds power-ups, a future-retro aesthetic and an endless arcade loop!  How long can you defend your cities against the enemy onslaught?

Just a few quick notes to any new members.

First, welcome to atari.io and ClubVCS! We're excited for you to join us for the very first Recharged Squad Challenge!

Second, please check out the rules of play above before posting a score.

Lastly, because Missile Command Recharged retains your highest score ever, submissions should be of the "Last Score" to help ensure that the score was achieved during the Challenge.

For example, the score for the sample submission photo below would be 13,750 and not 47,000.

Good luck Missile Commanders!

Clearly I'm not winning this one...I will say this, though - the only issue with Missile Command and its high score system is that it is somewhat dependent on upgrades, which is different than the other Recharged games so far. However, anyone should be able to compete with a little time spent upgrading.

@Mockduck , 💯 agreed. The grind aspect of the game is probably a holdover from its mobile roots and sets it apart from the rest of the series. The upgrade system will make the playing field a bit uneven for new players. But with a few hours of playtime, most folks should be able to level up their stats!

Just a quick reminder to post a photo or YouTube video of you score. Screen captures are not allowed as they are more easily manipulated for falsified scores. Multiple submissions are permitted.

Photos can be as simple as a quick cell phone shot with the score and screen clearly visible. See my sample submission in the second post.

If making a YouTube video, please post a link with your score. The video will be embedded in the thread.

You get a patch if you mail in a Polaroid. (KIDDING🤣)

Yes! Upgrades are the key to this one! You have to put some time in with repeat plays to upgrade your stats.

MCR is a unique among the Recharged titles in that way. It's the mobile roots of this game showing. Later titles don't use this approach.

We're at the halfway mark with two weeks left in the Missile Command Recharged challenge!

Here are the standings so far:

@KidGuzzi- 2,325

@Mockduck- 2,725

@datafry- 8,425

@Sabertooth- 10,950

Missile Command Recharged is a tough game but you can improve those scores dramatically by upgrading your stats.

Every participant -win or lose- gets one entry for the giveaway drawing. The high scorer of each challenge gets bragging rights, a set of DIY buttons and 4 entries in the giveaway drawing.

Good luck everyone!

Whoops. Not sure why my picture is posting sideways... on my phone it looks correct

Does it to me all the time.  I have to rotate it sideways once and save,  then rotate it back to the original.  I haven't figured out another way yet.

I actually did have a score in the low 9000's once, but didn't upload it as I was so far from the top it didn't seem relevant. However, for the future I'll do it to better reflect the standings!

Please do! This is a friendly competition and it's fun to see how folks improve over the course of the month!
