StormSurge Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 I hope he's right. I rarely choose the digital version of a game. I much rather prefer the physical copy in the event that the digital version becomes unplayable for whatever reason. (Servers shutdown, hard drive wiped & unable to re-download, etc.) Plus, I just like having something to look at & display.
Yo-Yo Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 Blockbuster's CEO said the same thing about movies, that people would always want to own a physical copy.
MaximumRD Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 Well, I hope so to but as Yo-Yo eluded to this is nothing more than false assurance from a very biased standpoint. It is in GameStops best interest for this to be the case whether true or not. I will always prefer a physical tangible copy in any format and hoping that will be the case for at least longer than some have predicted but looking at where gaming has been headed for some time I highly doubt that will always be the case. AlamoAtari Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 A cd costs about ten cents to make. If anything, it's the game manufacturers trying to squeeze every single cent out of the consumer. Xbox one was supposed to be digital. See how it worked out when gamers raged on it.
VectorGamer Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 I got burned in the digital space before. About 15 years ago Microsoft had their own music store and I bought a boatload of music with DRM that I can't play because MSFT shut the service down. Luckily some of that music was burned to CD so I can rip it back into MP3 if I wanted to. ⚠️ THIS MEMBER HAS BEEN BANNED FOR THE FOLLOWING INCIDENT: http://forums.atari.io/index.php/topic/475-theretrocade/?p=7683
LeeJ07 Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 The push to digital everything is far too premature, I think. I too prefer physical copies. A collection doesn't feel "real" when it only exists in a digital form. "I'd buy that for a dollar!" -Smash T.V.
Yo-Yo Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 I like games you can plug-in and play. I don't like paying 50 bucks for a game and then having to sit for an hour while DLC and updates download
Rowsdower70 Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 I know it isn't cost effective, but man I'd sure like to see carts and solid state consoles make a comeback. As far as Gamestop goes, I don't trust them any further than I can throw them. I just watched a video about a Gamestop "refurbish" job on a Genesis Model 1. I wouldn't let them put gas in my car. nosweargamer Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 Forever - No Another 10 years or so, sure. Us old folks (older than ten) prefer holding physical items in our hands and organizing them on our shelves, whether they be movies, games or books. But there is a generation who is growing up who organizes all of their media on digital devices, who won't see the point of physical items that can get scratched up, lost or create clutter. Sure, there will always be collectors, just like their are collectors my age who collect 8-tracks, Beta tapes and wax cylinders, but they will be in the minority. Babbages was good to me and I miss FuncoLand like you wouldn't believe but GameStop feels impersonal and awful. I don't like them and I don't trust their retro console scheme.

StormSurge Posted October 2, 2015 Report Posted October 2, 2015 Oof. At least Gamestop accepted the return. Hopefully the replacement system was better.
Yo-Yo Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 Geez dude. I just watched this. If what Pat & Ian are saying is true, that's pretty bad. Especially the part about the warranty sticker over the Sega CD port. That doesn't give me a lot of confidence in buying retro games from game stop.
