sramirez2008 reacted to TrekMD in New Atari 2600 Homebrew - Gunfight
Blitzer1001 just released Gunfight for the 2600.  Download here.
    Short Description
In this game inspired by 'wild gunman' on the NES, you'll go face-to-face with 5 different cowboys, each with their own reaction time.
    How to play:
Once a cowboy appears, you have to wait until a beep. When you hear the beep, you have to press the red button on your joystick as fast as you can. If you react in time, the cowboy will fall over. If you wait to long, the sky will become red and you'll have to reset the game in order to play again. The goal is to shoot as many cowboys as you can.

    Hi Guys 🙂
This is the horizontal space shooter I've been working on.
It's in a playable state, with three end of level bosses.
I'm not so sure if I've done so well estimating difficulty.

An Atari 8-bit Pico Cart.  Do I "need" another multi-cart for Atari?  No I do not.  But it was inexpensive and I went for it.

The other issue for the programmers was the time table.  Like Garry explained, he had all of 3 months!  Who knows how long the Inty programmer had?!  Maybe the same amount of time?

And also, I don't think it's even fair to criticize Coleco.  They could have just as easily decided to NOT make any other console versions.  You want Donkey Kong at home?  You gotta buy a ColecoVision.

Garry’s talked about this topic before. It’s brought up in this interview (among others) at Free Play Florida. Jump to the 11:58 mark.

2600 DK was just like 2600 Pac-Man for us BITD. Sure neither one looked that great, but we played each game, hour upon hour and had fun doing so. Honestly, these games have been made to look/sound worse (IMO) by the younger generations, whom obviously weren't around to play the games when they were initially released.

Ha! I joined eBay while having a conversation about Atari systems with my brother. He said, “remember Atari, I wonder if anyone’s selling them.” I immediately checked eBay and couldn’t believe how many games/consoles were available.
I just made my 21st year. They didn’t send me an email. Maybe I need to leave/receive more feedback.

So, exactly 24 years ago I joined Ebay and that led me to start collecting more and more retro games and systems.  I was surprised at how easy it was to find old games!  Ebay sent me an email with this image to "celebrate"...2913 positive feedback in that time.  🙂

I think we had this exact box!

This one reminds me of how hard it was to share toys with my older brother.  Always telling me what to do and how to do it and making sure I didn't "mess it up" or break it.  Sigh.  I guess this is why I love my Atari 2600 so much, as that was the first toy we had that I kind of took ownership of and didn't have to take any guff over.

Purchased it as well. There’s a hidden version of Asteroids. On the 2600+, with the latest dumper and firmware, you can invoke the pause button upon startup, which triggers Asteroids. Can’t seem to get that to work with this emulator. “P” is mapped to Pause, but pressing it upon start up, just pauses the game entirely.

Back then, I think it's fair to say most just accepted the game they got.  Sure, it wasn't exactly the same as the arcade.  But the flavor was there.  Even the Intv version (which I love to poke fun at) is fine if that's all you had as a kid.  That slow Mario movement gave it an extra challenge in the timing.  It isn't quite Donkey Kong, but it is still fun.
In retrospect, they hired who they could find.  With Garry Kitchen on the 2600 version, they got really lucky.  Frank Johnson (I looked it up) on Intellivision did fine as well.  When you realize that neither guy had the right documentation or knowledge, I think they deserve more credit than we give them.

Somebody needs to track down the Intellivision DK developer and ask though 🙂  I'm kidding of course.  That one is worse than the 2600 version IMO, but probably due to the limited time to develop.
