  1. You want another crazy theory? SPACE INVADERS CAUSED THE CRASH (on accident) Why? Space Invaders was such a huge hit, they couldn't make games and systems fast enough! So when they had the rights to the hottest arcade game (Pac-Man) and hottest movie (ET), because of what happened with Space Invaders, they overproduced both games, but when history didn't repeat itself, they were DOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMEEEEEDDDDDDD!!!!! Of course, they may have overlooked the fact that Space Invaders was incredibly fun to play. Also, being in short supply creates demand. Surpluses can created massive discounts. It wold be fun to see what would have happened if Atari made half the number of carts for ET and Pac-Man during their initial run. Perhaps that's why it seems Nintendo never makes enough systems. Maybe they know what's really best for business.
  2. Fun Facts: Pac-Man is the number one selling game all time on the 2600! It sold over 7 million copies!!!! But Atari made 12 million Ms. Pac-Man came out the following year, and by some accounts is thought to be a top ten seller of all time selling 1 to 2 million copies. You could make the case that ET and Pac-Man started the crash, based solely on the business behind it, since they massively overproduced both games and paid an enormous amount of money for ET.
  3. And now two of my Adventure themed videos are in my top ten viewed videos of the week for me. Thanks Ready Player One!
  4. I don't think any one game could have saved or prevented the crash. I think the crash was caused by a bad combination that included 1) Waaaaay too much supply flooding the market, including multiple systems and lots of shovel-ware. 2) A generation that didn't see the need to buy all the new systems coming out And perhaps the greatest reason 3) The fall and eventual sale of Atari, not due to poor software, but due to poor business decisions that included over producing software as well as driving out their best programmers who in turn quickly became competition. Atari was the giant in the market, sort of how the NES was years later. Imagine if it was 1988, and due to financial troubles, all of the sudden Nintendo was sold to IBM, stopping all production of NES systems and games. With such a massive void, their could've been another crash. It would be like if the NFL went under overnight. It wold take awhile for professional football to recover. Also, the crash was isolated to America, which makes sense since Atari was an American company and controlled the market. Overseas where the competition was more even, thanks to computers and such, the crash had no real effect. Thankfully, the gaming market is much healthier and more spread out with Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony. Systems and physical games may go extinct someday, but like movies and TV, gaming won't be going anywhere soon. Your question really inspired me. I may turn it into a video someday Tough (couldn't break 30k), but fun and good looking game.
  5. The name Retron77 refers to 1977, the year the 2600 came out.

Yes you do! And I also used it for my profile pic on FB! Thanks again! Great timing!

  11. Btw, as far as including Atari Day in the, it does make it sound like you'd only cover Atari stuff, although viewers would quickly catch on.
  12. Perhaps it was too difficult this time around. Adding 7800 support would've required a different cartridge slot, adding another emulator and possibly different eternals. Also, I hate to admit it, but the people wanting 7800 support probably make up the minority of potential buyers.
  13. That's crazy! It must be because of Ready Player One. I don't see these prices lasting.
  14. Oh please don't get me wrong! I would hate for that to happen too! I was bummed that Willie didn't find anything, and even reached out to him to see if there was anything I had he could use to help make up for it! Thankfully, most people have really enjoyed the box! We've done 11(!) boxes, with many repeat participants. And when we do them, the thread tend to be one of the most active and they help energize the forums too! However, what I am saying, is maybe we need to make sure everyone has a realistic expectation of the box. One of the funnest aspects is the mystery of what's inside! However, being a mystery means it may or may not have something super exciting for you. There always that chance, especially if you have a large collection. For instance, I know for me, that if a 2600,7800 or Intellivision game is in the box, I most likely already have it. And that goes for several other systems as well. But I still do it for fun! The point of the box was to put in games & such that are either extras from your collection, or simply games you are done with. For the most part, this has worked really well. However, with these boxes, there can be people who look at this mostly financially, taking out the pricier more unique items, and replacing it with cheap and common items. Unfortunately this has happened in the past, but thankfully it is not the norm, as most people "get it". Also, the box probably isn't for someone who has a massive collection that lacks mostly obscure and/or rare stuff. Odds are most user aren't getting rid of their crown jewels. But if you don't mind covering the postage for a chance to look through a box full of swap-able retro goodies, then the box may be for you! It's not perfect, and there have been times I didn't see much that excited me, but I always look forward to it and never regret participating.
  15. THIS! If your goal is to make money off the box or if you are hoping to put in ten copies of Combat to snag a copy of Stadium Events, then the box isn't for you. The Box is about community and fun! Sometimes you might get lucky and find some stuff you always wanted. Other times, you might not find anything you really need, but you can still enjoy rummaging through the box and adding something for someone else like Willie did. The box should be viewed more as an experience to share, not as a straight business transaction! (And yes, we want everyone to be fair with what they put in and avoid filling the box with real junk. You should always look at the box and ask yourself, is there something I have that the next guy might want and does the box have a nice variety in it to cover more bases)

  17. I'm very sorry you didn't find anything you like Thanks for adding to it though and passing it on. I certainly hope not. This is a first for the junk box. There is always a chance with people such as myself, who have large collections, that it can be hard to find something you want that you don't already have. Perhaps this was just a case like that with Willie this time. But we shall see as the box finishes its journey. We can always talk about adjusting the rules if need be after the box is done.
  18. So as some of you already know, I picked this up in a Goodwill for $10. It came packed in a plastic bag that may have originally stored some sort of bedding stuff. This set is supposed to have over 1,300 pieces. I have no idea if it is missing any, but it is missing one of the three books, but I should be able to find it online. Also, it appears to have some extra stuff in here as well as some of the Destroyer parts already built. I decided to make this a father son project. Building a set like this from a massive bag of pieces is pretty challenging. Usually they bag pieces in groups to make it easier. We also decided to try to break most of the stuff down into individual pieces to make sure we aren't missing anything. We are doing this in chunks and I will try to post the process as we go. DAY 1 - Main Floor (I think) DAY 2 - Outer Beams for Main Floor (I think)
  19. Yesterday I picked up this old cassette tape holder from Goodwill for a dollar. Not only does make a nice monitor stand, but it also does a great job storing standard size Genesis games!
