  1. I'm really only getting the red power up because it seems to be better on the next stage. (I'm being optimistic!)
  2. Heh... never saw the stage just end, either... What I've been doing with some success is almost exactly the same as your strategy. But I shoot the pod away less along the bottom I think. I keep it attached and use the ricochet lasers and the pod itself to take out guns. At some point the red powerup comes along (the one that shoots blue and red forward firing shots...) and I get that. Kind of wait under the cannons on the front to fire and then move out and reattach the pod on the back using the now rearward firing blue and red laser to destroy the guns. Here's where it gets hairy, though... There's limited space above the ship, but I try to reattach the pod to the front and then get down in that area where the phallus (lol) is to shoot it. I might just try to do the "wait it out" strategy, though.
  3. I got Fallout 3 probably around 08. Played it for about two hours then quit. Just kind of got to a point and got stuck or something, can't remember. Didn't pick it up again for a few years, but when I did, everything clicked and I played it all the way to the end. Never did any of the DLC, though.
  4. Wow... at the 27:50 mark or so of Justin's video. I've never seen the ship regenerate those guns like that. I either die too fast or kill it. lol But yeah, second boss strategy in the vid is exactly what I do. On first boss, I position my ship further up on the screen (even with that eyeball up there), but otherwise the same. Third boss I haven't completely figured out yet. 😃
  5. Ooo... Didn't realize there was one of these topics here... I put a post up in the TurboGrafx section, but might as well throw it over here, too. I beat Blazing Lazers the other day for the first time in years. Was down to three lives and a completely powered down ship when I killed the last boss. Here's some pics.
  6. Took a break from playing R-Type and popped in Blazing Lazers. I think playing so much R-Type gave me practice because I beat Blazing Lazers for the first time in years. No continues. Didn't think I'd do it as I was running out of lives... ended up killing the last boss with the pea shooter. 😃
  7. Also, although I'm no expert at this game... here's some tips that helped me out... 1. Turbo fire. It's on the real TurboGrafx controller, so I use it. I know you can do charged shots and all, but that just seems distracting to me and if you have the turbo on level 3 for button II, you can mow through most things pretty easily without bothering with charging shots. If you're playing with an emulator, you may be at a disadvantage. The emulators I've used at least, while they have an option for turbo fire, it's at a different frequency or does bursts then pauses, then bursts. The third level turbo fire on the real hardware pretty much gives you a steady stream of bullets out the front of your ship. 2. Use your pod. Pressing button I shoots your pod out from your ship. Pressing button I again, brings it back to you. While away from your ship, the pod continues to fire, and if you've got it leveled up to the second level, it fires in four directions. This can help destroy enemies that are hiding behind walls or around corners. Also, the pod itself is indestructible, so the pod itself can be a weapon and shield. Use this... get handy with switching it from the front of your ship to the back... use it to kill enemies coming from behind or to block bullets. Shoot it into the weak point of bosses and keep firing and let it do the dirty work. On the first boss, there's a weak point in its middle... shoot that bod in there, then move your ship up to the top of the screen (kind of in front of its eye) and keep firing. The boss can't hit you there, and he'll (he?) will go down quickly. On the second boss, the weak point is an eye that opens up on top. Put your pod on the front of your ship and nestle down right next to it so that every time it opens, the pod is hitting it, and just sit there firing. Gotta play with the hitboxes some to get in there as it doesn't look like it's possible, but it works... does take a bit of finesse, though. 3. Memorization. R-Type is definitely a memorization type of shooter. Knowing where the enemies are going to come from and getting ready to shoot them before they come on screen is super helpful. This isn't a game where you should react to things, this is a game where you plan. Trial and error in unfamiliar stages will help you learn patterns and which weapon you want to have. For example, I used the blue ricochet type lasers (blue powerup) exclusively for the first three levels, but it seems that the red and blue forward lasers (red powerup) are better for level 4. So near the end of level 3, I picked up the red powerup... so I'd have it at the beginning of 4. But I didn't know to do that until I got to level 4 a few times and figured out the blue weapons wasn't that helpful.
  8. May have figured out the third level a bit... gotten past it twice now in the last couple of days... funny thing is, it's actually hurt my high score some. I could usually get almost all the way to the end of the third level before dying. And I could do that with the subsequent lives, also. So I had essentially, level 1, level 2, and level 3 about three times. But since I'm so unfamiliar with level 4, I could get hardly anywhere in it. So it became level 1, level 2, level 3, and the beginning of level 4 three times. Don't know if that makes any sense, but doing 95% of level 3 three times got me more points than 100% of level 3 and 10% of level 4 three times. Anyway, this morning I started to figure out level 4... and got a new high score for this challenge. Then I used continues and figured out level 4 more and for the first time ever got to the boss! Anyway, my new high score for this challenge is now 167900. I've gotten higher in the past (broke the 200000 mark once), but this is the high so far for here.
  9. Got past the third level in one ship (I kept resetting if I died, lol). Anyway, didn't last long in the fourth level. It's so hard to get to it that I have no practice in it. Anyway, new high score for me.
  10. I go through periods where I don't play anything for several weeks at a time... but I feel it averages out to once a week or several times a week. Usually play something on Saturday. Weekdays just seem too hectic.
  11. Took a trip to the big city today and visited an arcade. Lots of classic arcade games set to free play. Pay $10 (plus tax) at the door and play all you want. I went in planning to write down all the games I played, but I quickly lost track. I got the high score on Ms Pac Man, though! (Okay, they had probably recently reset the scores, so it didn’t take much. But several people played after I did and none of them beat me, so there! lol) I realized afterward that I should have taken more pics, but I was having too much fun playing! And as an added bonus, we saw a Vista Cruiser station wagon in the parking lot when we were leaving. Just like the one in That 70s Show!
  12. I picked up this "Pac Man Game" last year. Heh... haven't played it, but it seems to be all there.
  13. Blazing Lazers was the first TurboGrafx game I ever played. Played it before I had my Turbo, even. It was playing on a big screen TV at McDuff's Electronics in the mall in my town. It was the only place I knew of that sold them, even. Anyway, I stood there for probably an hour playing it. I was amazed... this was so much better than Tiger Heli and 1943... lol
  14. So... I worked at Target in the mid to late 90s in the Electronics department. I was selling Playstations, Saturns, and Nintendo 64s. We had a game wall that I think was like eight 4 foot sections. When I started, it was pretty even at 4 sections for Saturn and 4 for Playstation. Then the N64 came out and the Saturn section started shrinking. At one point, I think it was one section for Saturn, four for Playstation, and three for N64. Then Saturn eventually got pushed to the back endcap and a section on the back wall, and then discontinued. Anyway, at some point during my tenure there, Sega of America sent retailers a kit with a video and some training materials on how to better sell the Saturn console. (They were trying anything they could.) For some reason... I kept the stuff they sent. So in this imgur album is a scan of the stuff we were sent... a letter on Sega letterhead to the retailer, a card for the salesman to keep and refer to, and one of the pamphlets that was supposed to go in a holder on the counter for customers to take home. I file this in the "probably incredibly rare but worthless" class of collectibles. lol https://imgur.com/gallery/2ZX4upv
  15. Also in my collection is some old TurboZoneDirect (TZD) mail order stuff. I scanned in one of the more interesting catalogs and made an Imgur album. Check out those prices in the Price List (third image from the bottom). Bonk 3 for $49.99! Splatterhouse for $29.99! Dynastic Hero for $49.99! Cotton for $49.99! Sigh... anyone have a time machine? https://imgur.com/gallery/lcBG9IA
  16. Yeah... I don't remember my original reason for keeping it. But I had it in the top of my closet for years and then put it in a plastic tote where it still resides. The boxes for the controller and TurboTap have pretty much the same story. The TurboStick box came much later, though, and was not mine since new like the other items, so that box isn't in as good a shape and I think has some sun fading or something. The sad thing is the boxes for the games. I had them stored away in a drawer and didn't take them with me when I moved out of my parent's house. I think my step-mom threw them out because I said I had gotten everything I wanted and forgot about them. I didn't have many... but had boxes for Legendary Axe, Blazing Lazers, and TV Sports Football. Unfortunately, I think my copy of Time Cruise was also in that drawer and got thrown out. It was a later release and didn't have a jewel case. It was just the turbochip in a plastic tray inside a box. And I'm pretty sure that box was in with the other boxes... I've always liked the aesthetic of the system. But I think it would have been better if they had just kept it the same form factor as the PC Engine... Just the idea that everything was so small was cool. And yeah, I like the TurboStick, but you can tell there's a heavy NES Advantage influence. Which isn't a bad thing, because I love the NES Advantage, too.
  17. I want to get an Everdrive, but I haven't yet. I have downloaded a lot and play via emulators, though. But it's just not the same... As far as what games worth trying, it's hard to recommend games without knowing what someone is into... There are tons of shooters/shmups on the system, of course. Blazing Lazers is one of the better known ones, but there's also Raiden, R-Type, AeroBlasters, Air Zonk, Soldier Blade, Darius, Super Star Soldier... the list goes on and on... I haven't played as many platformers for the system, but Legendary Axe, and the Bonk series are great. I'd throw in JJ and Jeff for honorable mention just because of how weird it is. The sports games are all kinda meh from what I've played, but they can be more fun if played with a friend. Neutopia and Neutopia 2 are great Zelda clone type games... Honestly, my best advice is find somewhere to download the games, and just go through each letter and grab anything that looks like it might be fun. I did. 😃
  18. Heh... I might have to fire up an older Forza game to take some pics. I used to play around more with the paint jobs and such, but haven't done that in the latest one... (Forza 6 is the most recent oen I have... no Forza 7 yet)
  19. Here's pics of my Intellivision stuff... Got all of this from a coworker. It was literally one of those, "Look what I found in my mom's attic" kind of deals. He tried selling it all to a local game store, but didn't like their offer then he came to me. I told him he should have come to me first. lol I offered him $50 and he accepted. Then I found out that I could only get $40 out as cash at the register, so I told him I'd owe him the other 10 and he said not to worry about it. The $40 was already over twice what the game store offered him. 😃 (Sorry the pics aren't that great... need to take updated ones. These are on my old apartment's kitchen floor and the dark color tile wasn't a good choice for a background.)
  20. I got my TurboGrafx back in High School. Probably '91, but I don't remember exactly. I had been looking in gaming mags and watching the battle between the Turbo and the Genesis (SNES wasn't out yet). I finally convinced my parents to get me a TurboGrafx, but didn't know it right away. My dad and step-mom told my mom that they were getting me one for Christmas, and my mom told me so I could pick out a game I wanted (because she had no idea about games.) I picked Legendary Axe. The system came with a mail in offer for a free game that required filling out a card and sending in the UPC and proof of purchase from the box (so my box has some holes in it where I cut them out). The free game I got was Blazing Lazers. They also got me the TurboTap and an extra TurboPad. I don't remember the order in which the rest of the collection was acquired or years... I know that World Class Baseball, Psychosis, and Military Madness were all bought when the local Hastings store was selling their rental games. TV Sports Football and the controller extension cable (an actual TG extension cable) were bought from Turbo Zone Direct vial mail order. But the others, I'm not sure... some Ebay, but don't remember which ones exactly. But the last game I got for it was Ninja Spirit and that was about five years ago. Most of the stuff was bought before prices skyrocketed. Hard to justify or afford games these days. lol
  21. I play the Forza Motorsport games. But haven't tried the Horizon games yet. I think I'm pretty darn good and can beat the computer pretty handily... (though not on the toughest difficulty) and my times are pretty high up on the scoreboards usually... but as soon as I'm playing against someone else live online, they win by such a crazy margin that I feel like I'm standing still. So I don't play online anymore. lol
  22. I still haven't finished. I've played through a good bit of it, but have no idea where I am or what I was doing or where I need to go next... but the thought of starting over and playing through all of what I've already played through again is not very appealing right now....
  23. I don't think my mom has ever played a video game. My dad played a round or two of duck hunt, but other than that, it's just Spider Solitaire on his computer.
  24. Heya StormSurge! Guess there's more AAers here!
