  1. That was how I used my VCR to play Atari games in the 90's hooked up to a Commodore video monitor that used composite ports. Right now I use a VCR to connect my game consoles to a coax jack only TV I inherited from my grandad.
  2. I like the 3rd era the best because I read about those games alot in GamePro, it actually showed that even with the Big N's dominance the 7800 is still alive and had these interesting games. I also like the recent homebrews as they do show off the full abilities of the 7800 with the POKEY sound chips. They're an expensive investment though... Sadly the only physical carts I've come in contact with were from the 1st era, still real good games but they gave people the impression that Atari only 'did' old arcade ports from the early 80's. 😞
  3. I didn't had a Game Boy when it first came out either... Back then I was in senior high I lost interest in Nintendo games in general. I was more interested in computer games plus whatever Tetris fix I needed I got from the school's computer labs with the B&W Macs (Also had a Tetris clone for my 8-bit Atari). When the Game Bot Color first came out, I thought it was a "colorized" GB but when I saw Super Mario Bros. DX on a TV commercial I thought "That's a portable NES!" And I was into the nostaglic stage for such games again so I got one for Christmas. I grabbed whatever NES ports and other classic arcade conversions I can get plus I got some used Game Boy carts. TBH, I actually enjoyed those games and if I didn't like the spinach green color I can change the pallete when powering on the game. I really loved my Atomic Purple GBC and got some machine accessories with the Shock 'n' Rock as my favorite along with the much needed Worm Light. But eventually I traded it all in for a Game Boy Advance as part of an upgrade deal from GameStop...
  4. When I had an actual ColecoVision, I like using the Super Action Controller for playing Mouse Trap since it was easier to open doors with it's keypad than with the standard controller. Using the firing triggers you had to squeeze hard was a pain though, so I prefer using an Atari joystick with a Coleco controller in the 2nd port for the manual keypad entry. On MAME I not only set my Xbox gamepad to emulate the Super Action Controller but also add the spinner axis to my left thumbstick to simulate the Roller Controller & Steering Wheel and also use the right trigger for acceleration (fire button) plus right thumbstick for shifting (right joystick).
  5. I gotta admit, I wasn't sure how a compliation of "one" game would go over but all the different versions of Karateka and other unreleased Apple II games there's enough content. But the documented timeline is the main event...that's on my wish list now!
  6. I now see why this one guy I knew from a user group would handle those XEGS carts with kid gloves compared to the more sturdy 800 & XL carts I'm used to...
  7. Yes, it's a AMD Ryzen mini PC that doubles as a game console...
  8. I've previously use Linux distros in the past but currently have a Raspberry Pi 4 using an Atari case from Micro Center. My "VCS Pi" is set to run distros off flash drives being inspired by the PC Mode. While I use a Windows 10 PC downstairs in my opened office room as a daily driver and gaming machine, the Pi is my "bedroom" computer if I need to work with privacy or just to mess around. Here are favorites... Raspbian: My main workhorse setup that I used for work-at-home situtations that don't require Windows. I use both LibreOffice locally and Google Workspaces & Microsoft 365 on the Chromium browser. Not ideal for watching videos but I have a Samsung tablet that acts a "second screen". Plus I'm able to remote into my Windows PC with Easy VNC though a RDP setup is better (needs Windows Pro). Ubuntu: That's my 'fun' OS that gives me the feel of using PC Mode on a VCS if I had one. It's the only that runs Firefox on a Pi but the constant updates are slow... other than that I like the different feel of using the Unity desktop compaired to the usual Windows one occasionally. BeePi: This transforms my Pi into a real Atari computer that runs not only FreeMint through Aranym but also ST emulation by double clicking on a disk image from a multitasking GEM desktop. It's not much of a daily driver but I'm still working on setting it up for basic stuff. RetroPi: My future project, I plan on hooking the Pi up to a CRT television using the A/V cable and play my ROM collections with (hopefully) USB adapters to use real Atari & Sega controlers.
  9. I just got the Steam version, ands a discount as part of the Recharged Bundle I got last year... 🙂 It's a good game if you like twin stick & bullet hell shooters. The right stick doesn't even fire, but aims like you had to in the original Berzerk. It's both hit and miss as yes you can hold & aim while moving away but the 360 degrees make it hard to aim accurately. In other words it makes using the railgun a liabilty w/o some kind of reticle of targeting laser. There's complaints about the looks but TBH i was too busy dodging the bots, turrets and bullets to even notice. And having Otto be able to come ouit of any door instead of the one you came out of adds to the intensity, and makes it harder to clear the whole room for bonus points which you'll need to move up on the leaderboards. You can't die from touching the walls (thank goodness!) but that makes it different from the original game. Feels more like a sequel like Frenzy than a remake... My biggest grip is how they covered up the bottom of the screen with a glass celing, where the score is, which makes it hard to see any baddies you need to blast to get the bonus, that was not needed! It's a decent game but not the best in the series, to be honest Yars: Recharged is a much better twin stick shooter.
  10. Make sure you cover up the power light if youy don't want anyone to know, like an angry mother. I've learned that the hard way in Jr. High...
  11. Yeah, but right now they are more interested in current IPs and refuse to put their old 2600 games on current consoles (except for plug 'n plays). Hopefully once Koteck leaves and Phil Spencer, who respects gaming preservation, takes over that would change...
  12. I know I've played ESB on the 2600 at a friend's house but I didn't really had any fun playing it so I can't really count that. Now the Star Wars Arcade game Atari came out a year later, that was the one that let me live out my Star Wars play fantasy (X-Wing Fighter) as a kid. Tell me those graphics don't look awesome even now...
  13. Background story: I like blue themed desktop pics on my Windows PC so that's what I download. And I switch between Light Mode & Dark Mode depending on what I use my PC for. Light Mode is for "work stuff" and I use the standard Win 10 logo screen and Dark Mode is for when I relax and play games and/or just web browse. These are my favorites... This is my overall retro gaming background, works great for both original games and recharched ones. 🙂 I used this for when I play on MAME to have a feel of an 80's arcade. I got this from a HyperSpin theme which is great for a background pic. And this is for when I play Doom mods and pretty much any modern PC game (which is mostly FPS stuff). Once I get my RPi 4 hooked up again I'll have some post some VCS related pics I used for Ubuntu...
  14. They had me at "Twin Stick Shooter" 🙂 Here's a factoid, Berzerk inspired Eugene Jarvis to make Robotron which was the first twin stick shooter...
  15. Wow, I was hoping to see something like the original Atari Age magazine for the current Atari and now it's here! I love the layout and the articles published. Maybe there might be a column for using PC Mode on the VCS which would be a nice call back to the Atari computer days.
  16. I had a Turbo Touch 360 for the NES and had planned on getting the Genesis version. It's not too bad to use if you kept your thumb on the center bump and slide on the pad instead of just pressing. Even got Super Mario to jump backwards! But sadly the sensor pad dies after a week and I had the company send my a replacement...only for that to die after a day. I also had an alarm clock at the time that had a touch sensor for the snooze button. You can see why clock makers went back to using buttons...
  17. Anyone actually gone to one of those Atari Camps? I've always wanted to but I did all my camping in the Boy Scouts.
  18. That's fine as long as this place doesn't get also toxic from the same gatekeepers...
  19. Well a lot of computer companies, including Apple, mostly allowed 3rd party companies to make their software with some 1st party stuff to get new buyers started (ie. MacWrite or NeoPaint). But that same philosophy cannot apply to consoles like the Jaguar because consoles are a much tighter controlled market. Sam might have hoped that 3rd party developers in the UK would provide a large bulk of Jag games like they did for the ST, but the US video game market was completely different and gamers were looking for ports of favorite arcade games like Mortal Kombat. (I honestly doubted any Japanese company would develop stuff for the American Jag...) I can't wait to read more of Lance's blogs which offers a dealer's insight of the original Atari. 🙂
  20. I figured it would eventually happen since Al removed all the unlicensed arcade ports for "legal" reasons, and the AA store has better expereince at selling physical carts than Atari XP right now so it makes sense. The homebrewing community on that site though, especially the ones that hate NuAtari, are gonna be PO'ed!
  21. I do wish you and everyone well luck with that. It's really tough all because of the Nintendo Narrative that many 90's gaming mags have repeated, and the overall influence on a whole generation of gamers...especially all the AVGN-wannabes on YouTube. And I'd be very surprise if anyone still watches LadyDecade since she lost all credibility after the whole e-begging scandal.
  22. I do but it's all in the attic right now. I play my games on emulators (sorry).
  23. Hi everyone, I'm looking for a new Atari community where we can freely share our love for all things Atari. I grew up with the 2600 of course and moved on to XE and ST computers. Plus any game for my PC that has the Atari label I also enjoy, especially the Recharged series. So I hope to be a part of some conversations here and have a good time with everyone here.
