There are two satellites in Mars orbit that relay ground transmissions from the various rovers back to Earth. There are also receiving stations in various places around our planet capable of receiving the signals. I'm unsure of the transmission rate, but am assuming it's low enough that it explains why we only get still images, and those being composite images as well. As for communication blackouts, I believe it's mainly when Earth and Mars are positioned on opposite sides of the sun.

When is the 'copter' set to attempt its first flight?
From what I understand, not before the 12th.

Only thing I did with my Ti about 2 years ago was to replace all the caps in it with a kit from Console5. I also redid the bodge wires inside so they weren't going over those heat spreaders anymore. I also know that I wiped off the old thermal paste and replaced with newer higher grade stuff. But that was it, just a little preventive maintenance for the future. Didn't take any pics at the time as I didn't think about it?
Do you have a link for "Console 5"? This may come in handy for others.

Newer is better and small in this instance. Did you ever hear of the Semi Virtual Diskette device that could be used on the TI-99/4A? Me neither! While it's no longer in production, at one time it would have been a cool item to own.

As our TI's age, they may break down, or you may have purchased a broken or even a 'thrashed' unit. This topic will be for any and all restoration tips you have developed or projects you have completed. So, please share them here, you might just be helping someone in need... or someone may return the favor for you someday.
If you are in the beginning stages of a 'resto' and have any questions... fire away!

Does anyone know what's up with Heatwave BBS? In my opinion it is THE TI BBS system, but for the last couple of days I've been unable to log on. 😟

My brother used to have a Commodore Plus/4. I thought I it was pretty cool looking back then:
I'm curious, those rubber looking function keys and arrows, how do they hold up? Are there real switches underneath or is it a membrane?

I've never owned one, but the Atari 1200XL has always looked sexy (at least to me).

"Back in the day", (late 70's to late 80's), when consumer grade computers all had a little more effort put into styling to differentiate themselves from the next brand or model, what do you consider THE BEST LOOKING COMPUTER OF THE ERA?

...Play games, maybe access a few BBS's. So I'm not really interested in the new things the machines can do. I do really appreciate the devices that let you load software without tapes or floppies (SD card or multi-carts). New games and new demos are cool
...I just want to experience the machine and software for what it was in the 1980's. Since I don't have a history with it, it's all new to me. And that's what makes it so fun.
...Don't get me wrong. I appreciate all the hard work and the enjoyment people get out of the new devices. To each his own.
That is totally understandable! When you say, "To each his own", I totally agree, because the truth is the hobby is different things to different people. Some people like to make hardware or software, while others like to eek out every bit of power they can, while still others simply want to play games and that is all right. Heck, I know one guy who only wanted one to put one on a shelf to view it along with all his other systems.
What people do with their TI is their business, no one has the right to tell somebody how they should enjoy their hobby. I admit my eyes glaze over when talk of assembly language coding arises, or someone obsesses about a .003 second increase of speed in the way one function works over another, but hey, if that's how they want to enjoy the hobby, go for it.
I love seeing how many different ways people expand their systems, and some of those systems do some really cool things with legacy hardware. I'm hoping to learn about some of the older tech that might be so good that it's not easy to replace or consider 'obsolete'.
The main thing is to have fun in whatever way you want, and a big part of that are sites like this one, that are friendly, encouraging and just fun to come to, while at the same time are open to newbies. I think I've gone off-topic here...

Over the past few years, the TI community has been lucky enough to have been inundated with a flood of new stuff in every category. Be it software as in games or utilities, hardware like the FinalGROM and TIPI. But it starts one wondering is newer always better? Is there something 'older' out there for the TI, that in your opinion, that has held up to the test time?

I found a few more variants of FleaBay today...
Variant 3
Variant 4
Variant 5

Come to think of it, there is another variant <<HERE>> that one can print up.

Hey @- Ω -, do you have a 3D printer? What would you suggest for someone (like me) who wants one (to print things like cart shells) but has no idea where to start?
Sadly no. I'll probably not be getting one anytime soon either. But there are a bunch of TI related files one can download and print <<HERE>> 😁

I like variant 2 a lot! I purchased mine from TBA from his booth at PRGE 2019 so it is in whatever printed case he makes and uses for them? But I've still yet to even setup up an SD card to try and use it yet so it hasn't exactly been too much of a bother with whatever current shell it has. But I do like that Omega shell above.
Oh, I cannot take credit for that case. COREI64 designed that case and printed it up on one of his many 3D printers. You can purchase one <<HERE>>.
There is not much to setting up an SD card for the FinalGROM, as it reads everything in standard PC format. Just drag and drop whatever you want onto it. You can of course use subdirectories as well.

I think I've seen at least two or three variants, other than the two shown below, so if you have or know of a photo of one, could you please post it?
