For this challenge, we're taking on Llamasoft's brand new take on the abandoned Atari arcade game Akka Arrh! The original Akka Arrh was a previously unreleased prototype arcade game made by Atari's Mike Hally and Dave Ralston in 1982. After failing field tests, Atari pulled the plug and shelved the game. It would not be released to the public until 2019, when the arcade ROM was leaked to the MAME community. Atari included the game in the Atari50 collection. Fast-forward forty years. Atari partnered with legendary game designer Jeff Minter to fully redesign the failed prototype for modern consoles and player sensibilities. This is not the failed 1982 prototype. This is a trippy, psychedelic expression of Llamasoft's madness! It's Minter unleashed. It's also a heck of a high score chaser! Play in PURE mode from level one and take the game as far as you can for the high score! Club VCS Recharged Squad Contest This game is the fourth title in our third Club VCS contest giveaway! Mockduck Posted April 13, 2023 Report Posted April 13, 2023 All right lets get one up, decent enough start: 65,533,058 RickR, Sabertooth and Marco1019 3
Sabertooth Posted April 13, 2023 Author Report Posted April 13, 2023 That's a heck of a score @Mockduck! Way to kick things off! RickR 1
RickR Posted April 13, 2023 Report Posted April 13, 2023 I'm sorry, but I don't own this one yet. I'll take a look when I have time, but I may miss this one. Good luck to everyone else!! Sabertooth 1
Sabertooth Posted April 15, 2023 Author Report Posted April 15, 2023 16,911,250 A far cry from @Mockduck , but a personal best. Played with the Modern. Marco1019 1
Sabertooth Posted April 16, 2023 Author Report Posted April 16, 2023 Here's a video of the above attempt from yesterday. This is such an odd and trippy game. In other words, its classic Minter! There is something zen-like about the whole thing. RickR 1
Mockduck Posted April 18, 2023 Report Posted April 18, 2023 Personal best was a bit over 100 million, but I don't remember if it was from level one or if I started up a bit. Either way, it was before the competition, so we'll see if I can reach it again. Sabertooth 1
Mockduck Posted April 29, 2023 Report Posted April 29, 2023 All right final score, wasn't sure how to destroy the red star creature things that kept grabbing my planets after say level 40: 104, 283, 514: Sabertooth and Marco1019 2
Sabertooth Posted April 29, 2023 Author Report Posted April 29, 2023 Well, you definitely crushed it @Mockduck! Are you playing with a mouse?
Mockduck Posted April 30, 2023 Report Posted April 30, 2023 Yes, with a mouse. I personally feel the game would be impossible to beat without this kind of input. Trackball would work as well. You can just flip sides as it were so much more easily than with a controller, it's a game changing experience not unlike Missile Command: Recharged. Sabertooth 1
Sabertooth Posted May 1, 2023 Author Report Posted May 1, 2023 Congratulations @Mockduck, the winner of our Akka Arrh: Recharged challenge! @Mockduck gets his first win with a terrific score of 104,283, 514! I come in a VERY distant second with 16,911,250. As the winner of this round @Mockduckwill receive 3 entries in the upcoming giveaway (prize TBA)! I will receive two entries since I posted his attempt via Youtube. I'd like to encourage Mockduck to post this high score on the Scoreboard so we can make sure this Challenge continues on! Congratulations again to @Mockduckan incredible showing! Also, a big congratulations to the rest of the Squad! Akka Arrh was an interesting choice for a reimagined title. Llamasoft took a failed arcade game and evolved the concept with Minter's trippy sensibilities. Its a mind bending experience that's well worth trying. NOTE: Our next Recharged Squad Challenge is a special Double Feature: Caverns of Mars! RickR 1
