Visiting Thailand

Recommended Posts

My wife and I left Seattle on Monday and arrived in Chiang Mai very late Tuesday night with a short layover in Inchon Korea. We are one third of the way into our trip and are heading off to Bangkok tomorrow. This is our first time visiting this wonderful country. This trip uses up the last of my airline credit that I received when I couldn’t use my ticket to go to Japan last summer.

As advertised, the food is amazing and amazingly cheap (to us anyway). My favorite so far has been the street food stand where we had our first meal here. The food was great, and for the two of us, it cost 110 baht (35 baht to US$1).

That is cool!  I've never been to Thailand but I do enjoy Thai food!  Those pictures are making me hungry!  LOL  Enjoy your trip!  BTW, the closest I've been to Thailand was a trip I did to South Korea in 1997.

You really need to visit Korea again. It has changed so much since 1997. I visited for the first time in 2002 after immigrating to the US and then again in 2018 before the pandemic. We are hoping to visit next year.

Thanks, Rick. It’s a good thing I didn’t share all the food photos 😂

Thai massage has also been amazing. Here in Chiang Mai, it only costs 200-300 baht for an hour at many shops. My wife and I just returned from a body massage. If it doesn’t cost much more in Bangkok and Phuket, we will probably do this every day.

Oh, I'm sure it's changed plenty!  It's been a while!  How's all the shopping stuff underground?  That was so cool.

We returned from our trip last Wednesday, and it's been a difficult physical recovery. Back to back red eye flights (red eye from Thailand to Korea and after a 9 hour layover, another red eye from Korea to Seattle) just compounded the matter. My wife and I basically slept day and night for three days 😂 It was a good thing that I didn't return to work right away because I needed those three days and then some. I came down with a bit of a cough--nothing serious though so over-the-counter cold med took care of it.

The trip itself was great and a lot of fun. More importantly, I got a glimpse of retirement life. My wife and I anticipate going on extended trips after retirement, and I wondered what that would be like--just the two of us without the kids. We got along great and had a lot of fun enjoying each other's company.

One goof that I made was not getting our AT&T iPhone unlocked before leaving the country. I thought they were already unlocked but nope. I even bought e-sims before the trip, and when I tried to add them to the phone once we landed, it was a big no go. That meant that we couldn't set up the Grab app for cheap transportation, but that turned out ok. We just walked a lot and used public transportation. I think I averaged 14k steps on most days.

Here are a few photos -- lots of amazing food and sights.

I love this.  Looks like a great trip.  Good food, lots of walking, lots of good eating!

And YES, there *is* life after kids.  Enjoy it as long as you can.  These kinds of trips and memories are worth more than anything else.

Looks like you had a great trip!  Yes, returning from the other side of the world is its own type of jetlag!  Your day/night cycle is turned upside down and it does take a few days to adapt again.  Sounds like you have a great plan for retirement too!   Thanks for sharing your pictures!
