As strange as it may sound in this community, my answer is the 2600.
I can say with certainty that I am more excited by it now than I ever was as a kid. Sure, I loved it and practically begged my parents to get me one as a kid in the early 80s, but the mainstream 2600 games couldn't compete with the coin-op games of the arcades. While some games were a lot of fun (Activision Starmaster immediately comes to mind), I don't recall a game that really held deep interest or love. I think I owned eight to ten 2600 games as a kid (I had to save for three months to buy one game). Video games that I have most fondness for as a kid were all arcade games. The writing was probably on the wall when I got the Big Trak for Christmas, and I had a lot of fun programming it. By the time I discovered computers and programming in sixth grade, I lost interest in the 2600.
I practically ignored all consoles after the 2600 because I was playing games on computers. While I briefly owned the Vectrex and GameBoy during the late 80s and early 90s and got a PS1 in '98 to play FF7, I played very little on consoles until I got a Xbox 360 in the late 2000s.
After learning about this thing called retro gaming four years ago, I started learning about all the consoles and games that I passed on, in particular the PlayStations and Xboxes. A year ago, I started looking back on the 2600 and started playing Atari games again only this year. I bought the 2600, 5200, and 7800 just prior to joining the I/O in August and have since added an Intellivision, Jaguar, SNES, Genesis, and CoreGrafx to my console stable. My ability to appreciate past consoles has grown significantly the past year or two, and I now see I missed out on a lot of console gaming goodness especially during the 90s and 2000s.

My first thought was the 2600 with its historical footprint and wide variety of games, but I ended up voting for the Commodore 64. It brought computer gaming to the next level with the sound chips and color graphics it could pull off. I know the Atari line of 8 bit computers were also big at the time and helped get more computers into homes, but it almost seemed to me at the time that the C64 was the first big gaming computer. I had one growing up, and it seemed all my friends also either had a C64, or when they came out, either the newer 64C or the 128. The Commodore also had great online services when modem prices started getting more reasonable and I was a member on Quantum Link for years, and I think that service ended up become AOL or one of the other big PC on-line service providers if I heard right. So I think the C64 had a huge impact on what we play and do on computers now.

My vote would be the 7800. When my C64 crashed on me back then, I jumped on board with the NES. I never even gave the 7800 the time of day as I had a 2600 growing up and just thought it would be more of the same. Now that I own a 7800 and see all the great games, like Food Fight and others, that came out, I wished I had gone that direction. The NES is a great system, but most of the games that came out for it were not that appealing to me. The 7800 library had more of the game play type of games that appeal to me, especially now with the home brew scene.

Seeing this remake and years ago we had a fan remake Elite, makes me wonder what other old games need a remake or have been remade from the old 8 bit computers?
I have downloaded this now. Have to find time to play it in the next few days.

For me it depends on the system.  On the 5200 its Pac-Man but I like Ms on there too.  The 7800 has the best port of Ms. Pac-Man, period.  There's no competition there.  Jr. Pac-Man on the A8 and 5200 are really good as would have been Super PAC on the 5200.
On a side note...wife and I have been playing a farm game.  In the game you can hunt down 100 gold nuggets for an easy $1M earning.  While hunting I ran into this building with a gold nugget on top...

I will have to get this. I remember playing the 64 version and my friend and me nearly came out of our seats the first time an alien jumped up and started banging on the window.

Don't forget to purchase an AtariVox when this game does become available so you can get all the arcade speech as well! John's release of Wizard of Wor arcade for the 2600 is one of the best home ports of the game released! It is really really good and has all the speech from the arcade also provided you have an AVox for your Atari. I've not purchased all of their games as many of them either aren't favorites of mine and I don't really see me playing them on the 2600. But I do own Mappy, WOW, and Galagon. Although that last one is more of a shelf piece as I have the actual Galaga arcade cocktail game in the center of my game room to fire up and play the real deal at any time! 😉

Stop what you are doing and go get this game right now.  It's a modern remake of the classic game "Rescue on Fractalus".  Available (FOR FREE!) for Windows, Mac, Linux and (woah!) Oculus VR!

Me, too -- loved Gorf in the arcade. It was quite the departure from Space Invaders gameplay. I remember being thinking "what's this?" back in the early 80s.
I hear ya about the wallet. It doesn't help that Al releases all the new games in practically a single batch.

Same on both of those other ones. With all these homebrew arcade ports coming out for both the 2600 and the 7800, my pocket book is feeling a little more empty.
I loved Gorf in the arcade, but I never did play the CBS version until later. My home version I always played was on my Vic-20. It was a pretty good port, but it was still missing the Galaxian stage. From everything I have seen there never was a port with all 5 stages, probably because of licensing.

Yes, this was the most surprising thing when I re-discovered the 2600 -- the passion of the home-brew community and the talented folks still coding for a 40+ year old platform. Some of the games rival NES games in graphics quality (to my eyes anyway).
I've no doubt Champ Games will release an amazing version of Gorf. I'm also curious about their work on the 2600 Qix port, and their nearly done port of Robotron looks amazing.

I just saw something that got me excited. Looks like Champ Games is doing a complete port of GORF for the 2600. They will be showing it off in their livestream this Friday. Is there anything these guys cannot create on the 2600. I have always loved the arcade game and it will be neat to be able to play all the levels and also to have speech in the game. I love how the homebrew community is continuing to breath new life into a system that is now over 40 years old.

I love the villain faces on the bottom of the DVD cover, in a bad high school yearbook photo kinda way. 😁
Fun Fact: In Japan, "Lincoln vs Aliens" was added to the Codename STEAM name. Personally, they should've just called the game that, lol. I have a copy too, but haven't had time to get into yet.

Hi guys! In case you didn't know, I sell games on the side as part of a very small business on eBay.  My seller name is integritygames and I've been on eBay for over 16 years and have sold over 2000 auctions. I take the time to clean the contacts, test every game and pack well when shipping. I try to keep competitive prices and fair shipping (I often have several 99 cent games for sale like common 2600 games). Now I am a real small business and have paid for my licenses and collect sales tax for buyers from Florida.
And btw, for trusted, long term forum members, if you ever see a game you want to trade for, just message me and I will see if we can work something out.
