HDMI out, SD card, widescreen support, plays 2600 and 7800 cartridges and most importantly... The Atari logo lights up.

I guess it runs games under emulation though?  Any thoughts on this development?  Anybody been waiting for an easier way to hook these up to modern TVs like this for 7800 games?  Honestly I think 99.99 would've been a sweet price 129 isn't bad but not great either.

  2. Once again I prove myself to be a liar as the next game I beat is not Rikki and Vikki but Hat Trick.  A nice short video but another one bites the dust and it made sense to do it now.  This game was also done by ibidinc just like Karateka and done by a familiar name.

So the run down so far is

    Midnight Mutants

    Tower Toppler

    Double Dragon

    Ninja Golf

    Dragons Havoc

    Kung-Fu Master

    Commando

    Karateka

    Hat Trick

All beaten on video.  For the upcoming video I wanted to point something out. There will be two Rikki and Vikki videos, this first one is single player and there will be the two player video as the game is much different in multiplayer.  That second video has yet to be recorded and will probably be pretty far in the future.  As always thanks for the support guys!

  3. I should have the new video, a complete playthrough of Karateka up tomorrow.  I want to polish up the voice overs a bit for you guys, talk clearer, etc.  I already have the following video started but after that I have a few games we could look into.

I finished up playing Bentley bears crystal quest complete with all warps and the entrance to world six.  Seems that nobody has posted this info online that's easily accessible and I feel the games been out long enough that we can make it common knowledge.

    Or

We can look into the Missing in Action prototype.  While incomplete it is technically beatable and has an ending.  But I took the easy route and played with invincibility on.  I figured it was fine since the game is in an incomplete state.  I plan on attempting to discover as much as I can about what happened to this unreleased gem behind the scenes.

    Or

We can look at the two 7800 wrestling games, title match and mat mania.  I planned on combining the two into a single episode since all I have to do is beat the CPU.  Plan is to embarrass myself with some bad 80s wrestling impressions, way out of my comfort zone but you only live once.  Might as well have some fun.

Let me know what you guys want to see and let me know if you like knowing what's coming ahead of time via these forums or rather be surprised.  I figured with all the knowledge on this forum you guys might drop some knowledge for the video that I might've missed.

Yeah, it does look nice.  The main issues are that it is slow and the control scheme does not work well.  I'm sure there's a way to salvage it since other versions play well.  I  guess no one has tried because there are those other versions out there!  LOL

I wish somebody would not only fix the gameplay but also fix the akuma sprite.  He looked so cool in the apple ii version and they could've beefed him up for the 7800.  Oh well...

And Commando is an excellent game!  My condolences with Karateka!  😆

    You have no idea...

That village area is the main are where you can essentially just park yourself with machine gun and just keep taking out soldiers left and right with minimal risk to yourself

I did bring that up somewhere in the middle of the video but I didn't specify any area in particular.  When I was looking for all the pow rooms I found a couple different places that I felt safe camping at myself.

Also somewhere on AtariAge, someone mapped out all the hidden POW locations (Unique to the 7800 version I believe), for those bonus points. I can't recall if these locations can be opened again, when you get through both tours of duty though.

I found the maps here at atari7800.org/commandomap.htm I'll add it to the pinned comment on the video.

  6. It seems I missed a cheat code for Commando of all games.  So I added it to the end of the commando playthrough that should be uploaded to YouTube in a few hours.  Nothing too crazy but for completion sake I'll add it here as well.

Power on the console with Commando inserted and as it starts press down reset, select and pause on the console at the same time.  Then release them.  If you did it right at the end of the typewriter intro you should see a bit of flashing text!

This text is the developer credit!

There are also a few hidden POW tunnels that not many people know about.  Again, I show off a couple at the end of the video that's uploading tonight.  It's a good excuse to link the two videos in the comments if nothing else!

Jon is just cranking out the 7800 content 👏👏👏🕹️ ❤️

I have a ton more I want to put out but some are more time consuming than I expected and others I realized are beyond current skill level to produce the way I want to.  As I said before, I know the channel will never be big but I want to try and save the history of the console and give a place for people to discover it.   I was always disappointed with the lack of 7800 content on YouTube. Thank God for people like No Swear Gamer that gave us some good stuff already. Anyway, hopefully your all enjoying my videos too!

  8. In my never ending goal of preserve everything Atari 7800, I've Made a video covering all the cheats I know for the console.  Includes things like Credits for Asteroids and level select for little known homebrews and everything in-between

I'd like to do a part two if you guys can think of any I skipped or didn't talk about!  Credit will be given to anybody who contributes a secret, easter egg, or code if I ever do a second video!). As always let me know what you think!

  9. Good topic.

Not to echo what's already been said but a lot of the late 7800 games felt very NES like.  Scrapyard Dog was clearly Ataris attempt at a platformer, and Alien Brigade was a good Operation Wolf style game.  When it comes to feel I always thought Fatal Run felt like an NES game.  A lot of people call Midnight Mutants the 7800 Zelda but MM never felt like that to me.

As I type I can't think of a good reason why but Xevious always felt like an NES game to me.  I know the NES had its own port but for some reason I've always felt that way.

Do note that on Commando on some of the levels in the game, there are spots where you can essentially just park yourself and keep mowing down enemy soldiers without much if any risk of death to yourself. I've done this several times to rack up scores in the millions. I guess it could be seen as an cheat or something, but it is just taking advantage of how the game was coded. I own the actual arcade cabinet for this game and I do find that the 7800 version is one of the more better arcade ports for the home to play

I don't see that as cheating at all.  Maybe exploitative but it's not your fault how the game was coded.

When it comes to arcade ports or ports in general on the 7800 I feel that the developers did a good job coding to the consoles strengths rather than trying to keep things 100% accurate.  But most are fairly accurate too...most.

Hopefully I'll have commando up in about two days time.  It's getting to the point that I have so many of these recorded I'm just waiting on having enough time to research what I want to talk about and record the voice over.  If there are any requests I may already have the footage and can prioritize it.

  11. Another game completed.   This time I took down Ninja Golf.   I was initially doing it on Kamikaze difficulty but I didn't think that was as much fun to watch.   My strategy on that difficulty is basically to run from everything.

So here is the game completed on normal.  I also talk a bit about the two developers who did the game for Blue Sky.   David Dentt has also done some interviews online and in books about his efforts on Ninja Golf.

I got to be really good at this game when I was younger and preferred to play my 7800 version over my step-bro's NES version. The elbow punch is the most powerful attack and using the enemy stance to your advantage is the key here. As you stated, the enemy has two states. They are either going after your and following the player on the same plane as you stated, or they are walking in your direction but on a different line of plane on the game screen. So what I did was move the controller up and down quickly to get the attacking enemy to switch to wonder mode and then come down and elbow punch them over and over. I also used the reverse jump kick but mostly once I got enemies locked in ontop of each other in a corners and such to wallop them.

That's awesome!  I never got that good at the game but I got decent enough to beat it.   I'll have to try mastering the elbow smash.   I like the back kick and then jump kick combo it's fun to do.   Then again I have fun smashing rocks together so maybe it's just me lol

On the green Abobo's just before entering the final lair, I found a way to get them to come one at a time if you didn't go too far beyond the screen and then again using the elbow punch of them was key to taking them down quickly. I got to the point where I could pretty much beat the game anytime I played it only loosing 1 life. I think I was able to do it on a single life a few times even.

I managed to trigger the green abobo one at a time once.   I haven't been able to do it since but I should probably scroll the screen a little at a time and slowly to do that.

doubt I could now though as it has been 20+ years since I played this but I'm sure if I took some time it would all come back to me.

Let me tell you I'm having a harder time now than all those years ago.   And back then I was using the Proline rather than the awesome retrogameboyz controller!

The fact that you know another strategy for this game goes to show that there can be variety in the 7800 Double Dragon.   I don't think many people give it a chance because the other versions are more appealing on most levels.  But I don't think the 7800 deserves all the hate it gets either.

I have a video in the works comparing the NES and 7800 Double Dragons too!

Thanks for the comments and taking interest!

    hi guys,

the best basic i ever saw was turbo basic on the atari 8-bit. it looked as good, and was as fast as assembly. but it never had a compiler made for it, and it required a run time program.

otherwise basic is really slow even with lots of data statements. get a few sprites going, or get going fast and you really notice the slowdowns.

Thanks for the developer insight.   I assume all your (and peters) games are assembly?
