greenween got a reaction from Justin in Squad Challenge - Asteroids (Atari 7800)
I just happened to have the 2600 controller hooked up when I tried playing. Works the same as the 2600 version of Asteroids.

I have a boxed Starplex I got from RickR a while back. Gonna try it next! 🙂

I've been testing. Here is what I've found:
Retrogameboyz pad. "down" does not work for hyperspace. Retrogameboyz 5 button controller - "down" does not work. No way to hyperspace. Atari 2600 joystick - "down" DOES work! WTF. I guess this is an undocumented "feature" in this game.

I confirmed with my 2600 Starplex controller that the down button activates hyperspace. That's weird that tapping down on a 7800 compatible joystick does nothing. Maybe I should try the OEM 7800 controller to see how hyperspace is activated... assuming I have one.

That works??? I thought only button 2 would do it. If it works, I'm totally breaking out the 5 button asteroids controller.

Maybe it only works on the 2600 controller? Tapping down on a 7800 compatible controller did nothing, so I had to press the second button. I will test my Starplex controller.

No hyperspace!
I will admit...hyperspace works like the arcade here. Sometimes, your ship blows up. Still, it has helped me stay alive many times.

Wait, you mean I'm NOT supposed to be flying all over the place in a frantic panic?? 😀

When the mind is more relaxed and clearer, the fingers move just a little faster 🙂
One tip: don't be afraid to move your ship a little here and there. Staying in one spot and simply rotating and shooting doesn't work well in later waves. When you see a relatively safer spot, move there and shoot and repeat.

32,460. I played on OpenEmu for Mac OS & recorded video which I can upload to YouTube tonight or tomorrow. I never played this particular version before this challenge. The sound effects do add something to the game.

If you try the arcade method of flying up the middle of the screen....watch out! They are deadly accurate in shooting you.
I also like this. And you can fly behind your score, which is kind of cool too.

Holy smokes those rocks move fast! And with a smaller play area than usual! On a positive note, though, the UFOs don’t seem to be as much of a threat as they are in the arcade versions!

One of my most played games on the 2600 growing up. I've owned this version for about 10 years. I think I've played it twice! LOL Time to get on it!
