  1. And I second RickR on the checkups. Had my first colonoscopy a little over a year ago, and seriously, it was fine. The worst part about it was losing sleep because I had to keep going to the bathroom the night before. At least here in the States (I think it's different elsewhere) you're given a sedative that will either knock you out or make you think you were knocked out. (It was soooo nice to have that nap! The nurse told me I had a full conversation with the doctor during the procedure but I didn't remember a second of it!) They found a few tiny polyps that turned out to be harmless, so I don't have to go back again for about nine years from now. But early detection is always key to beating it.

  2. After much procrastination and dragging, episode 135 is finally out!

Welcome to the 2023, they're calling it this year. Sean and Jim offer up their thoughts and experiences on these particular games because, well, they're arcade video games. That's why we're all here, right?

We hope you enjoy this episode. Jim and Sean believe it's the best episode they've produced all year.

  3. OMG, I had no idea he was sick. 😞  (I really need to check these Atari forums more often.)

He was a great supporter of The Atari 7800 Homebrew Podcast and Pie Factory Podcast for a long time.

My wife and I fly Southwest whenever we travel. I'd always try to see if he was our pilot. (He never was in the time I "virtually" knew him.) A couple of years ago he sent me an amazing picture of the Chicago skyline that he took from the cockpit.

Very active in the retro gaming community, and I know he had at least one homebrew game (for TI 99/4A, I believe) either in progress or completed.

  4. A new dawn brings a new day. A new day brings a new episode of Pie Factory Podcast (sometimes). In Episode 134, Jim and Sean discuss an obscure Pac-Man clone and a side-scrolling shoot-’em-up in which you defend the planet against mutant spiders. We hope you enjoy this deep, thoughtful discussion. (Please note: Pie Factory Podcast does not guarantee 100% accuracy in episode descriptions.)

  5. Been a while since there was a new episode. I guess you could say I took the summer off? Well, in this new chapter, you’ll learn about a few things that took up my time. Why should anybody care? heh. When you find out why, please let me know! I mean…I’m just a schnook!

    • A Schnook and the California Myth – dream vacation or harsh reality? (Or both?)
    • Should I have spent more time at the office? Well, for a month and a half, I did not.

  6. A huge thing for me is the Atari 2600 back-compatibility, and I'm lucky enough to have not one but two 7800s (late production) that will play everything, including the 2600 games that are not supposed to work on it. 🙂

Other than that, there were two things that sold it for me: 1) Food Fight, and 2) the homebrews. (I didn't get a 7800 until 2006.)

  7. If you're the kind of person who likes stuff, well…you're in the right place because episode 130 is certainly stuff! This time we stray from our usual format to talk about everybody's favorite diagonally-scrolling platform shoot-'em-up, the long lost sequel to Dragon Ball Z: a little Atari game called Pong! Nobody will be seated during the last ten minutes of the episode.

  8. I only tried 7800 Karateka in the last few years...and I instantly understood the flak it got. Holy God, it's amazingly horrible. I can only suspect that whoever worked on it also worked on Touchdown Football and Fight Night; they all had a similar vibe in terms of playability and the action on the screen not reflecting what you actually do on the controller.

  9. Episode 128 is now available.

Our love goes out to those suffering because of the situation in Ukraine, and in fact, our next Patreon payout will be donated to Doctors Without Borders for their team in Ukraine. (And we thank all of you for making this donation possible.) We hope in these dark times we can bring some enjoyment to our listeners.

  10. It’s that time of year again: January. Which means it’s not February yet. 31 days to get the January episode out on time, and this schnook takes every second to do so! In this chapter:

S.A.T. is a Four-Letter Word: a life in test prep
Music For Schnooks: Don’t Meet Your Heroes – Nine and a Half Times Blue: an everyday schnook meets one of his musical heroes and hilarity ensues! (Or maybe not?)
