RickR Posted April 21, 2017 Report Posted April 21, 2017 I'm not sure if it's unusual or not, but I'm a huge fan of video game sports games. From Pele's Soccer to a modern Madden game...I tend to really enjoy them quite a bit. And so, here's my meager SMS collection so far. I recently got three sports games -- Great Baseball, Great Basketball, Great Football with the thought that if anyone would like them, it would be me. But I've tried them...and they are HORRIBLE. Great Baseball looks good graphics wise. i like the umpire speech. But the gameplay is just horribly slow. A full game takes forever. Can those outfielders move a little faster??? Great Basketball looks terrible and is terrible. The players are tiny, and their shots have no arc to them. Making a basket seems random. And so many foul calls that seem totally random. Blech. Great football. This is probably the best in the lot. It looks and sounds great. Picking a play is kind of unique as it scrolls through all available plays, you're supposed to secretly push a button when the one you want is highlighted. The one player game is all offense with you down by 21 to start the game. The run game works well. But the passing game is horrid. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if they had to put the word "Great" in the title, it probably wasn't that great. MaximumRD and The Professor 2 Quote
The Professor Posted April 21, 2017 Report Posted April 21, 2017 Joe Montana Football came out for Sega Master System in 1990, a late release for that console. It was an ok Football game but about the best you could do on SMS. It reminds me of Touchdown Football on the 7800 actually. Hard to beat Tecmo Bowl on NES. RickR 1 Quote
Ballblaɀer Posted April 21, 2017 Report Posted April 21, 2017 http://segaretro.org/Category:Master_System_sports_games Wow -- the technological improvement between World (Great) Soccer to FIFA International Soccer is quite something! (1987, global release) (late 1996, released in Brazil only) RickR and Lost Dragon 2 Quote
fergojisan Posted April 23, 2017 Report Posted April 23, 2017 I love Reggie Jackson Baseball. Much better than great, in my opinion. RickR 1 Quote
Atari 5200 Guy Posted May 31, 2017 Report Posted May 31, 2017 Great Football came with the SMS my Grandmother gave me for Christmas (Christmas Eve) in 1989. It was the pack-in game with a console that had no built-in games other than the snail game I found by accident. Since it was the only game I had that night I played the heck out of it. I loved it!! The next day I opened up gifts from Mom and another SMS was there with Hang-On and Safari Hunt. A few more games were there as well including Space Harrier, Out Run, After Burner, and Astro Warrior. I loved Astro Warrior the most because I already played the others in the arcades. I was glad to have them and did play them but Astro Warrior was the most played title on my SMS. Great Football still got played often. But I agree...it is kinda hard to beat Tecmo Bowl on the NES. Simply a very well made football game. I can still hum the music from the game LOL. RickR Posted August 27, 2017 Author Report Posted August 27, 2017 I love Reggie Jackson Baseball. Much better than great, in my opinion. I got a copy of Reggie Jackson, and you are so right! It's a great baseball game. Very arcadey and fun. Although I don't like how the field is sometimes a weird color. Quote
RickR Posted August 27, 2017 Author Report Posted August 27, 2017 I also got a copy of "Great Golf". Looks great. Very challenging. It doesn't hold your hand like other golf games do. But it's fun. I'm starting to be very impressed with the SMS. Great hardware. greenween 1 Quote
