Woah!  I have not thought of that.  Combat goes more with Thanksgiving...especially if people decide to talk politics at dinner.

I'm interested in Smurf, Dodge Em, and Flag Capture; not sure if there's anything on my trade list you're interested in, if not I'm willing to do cash if that works?

I am digging this Atari Flashback Portable from AtGames!
Released by Atgames November 2016, this little portable game player lets you take 60 classic Atari 2600 games on the go!  Plus it has a SD card slot!   Not all Atari 2600 games will work with this device though, so some experimenting will have to be done to see what ones you enjoy will work on this device.

The unit itself pretty much is a copy of AtGames Sega Genesis Portable with a different color scheme.   The controls feel good and responsive.   The extra buttons that can be seen above the red fire button are for Mono/Color, left and right difficulty, Game level select and a pause button.   The unit also features a return to main menu button, a video out jack (cable can be obtained from Atgames.us), headphone jack, volume control, SD card slot, charging LED, power LED and the on/off switch.

The unit does not have a battery compartment, rather it has a internal rechargeable battery that can be charged from a USB port or a 6 volt charger.   The screen is very crisp and bright and measures 3.2 inches.

The unit has 60 built in games that can be selected via a on screen menu that also features a box screenshot of each game.  Games included are Adventure, Adventure II, Air Raiders, Aquaventure, Asteroids, Astroblast, Atari Climber, Black Jack, Bowling, Breakout, Cannonball, Centipede, Circus Atari, Crystal Castles, Dark Cavern, Demons to Diamonds, Double Dunk, Earthworld, Fatal Run, Fireworld, Frog Pond, Frogger (arcade version not 2600), Frogs & Flies, Front line, Fun with Numbers, Golf, Gravitar, Hangman, Haunted House, Haunted House II, Jungle Hunt, Millipede, Miniature Golf, Miss it!, Missile Command, Night Driver, Polaris, Pong, Radar Lock, RS Basketball, Saboteur, Save Mary, Secret Quest, Shield Shifter, Solaris, Space Attack, Space Invaders (color arcade version not 2600), Star Ship, Star Strike, Stellar Track, Strip Off, Sub Commander, Tempest, Video Checkers, Video Chess, Video Pinball, Waterworld, Wizard, Yars Return, Yars Revenge.

Sound is pretty much typical for a AtGames portable, it sounds rather tinny and distorted at times.  however if you use the headphone jack the sounds are improved.  The SD card port is what really makes this device interesting!  Care must be taken to make sure the unit is off before removing or inserting the card as damage can occur (according to the manual).   The first game I tested was the 2600 version of Space Invaders and it worked perfectly!

Adding games to the SD card is very straight forward.  Just put the games in a directory called "GAME" and if the unit can recognize the roms they will be listed (I had to rename the space invader rom in order to get it to show up).  If the unit cannot recognize any games it will just go back to the SD Card Browser icon in the main menu.
    Pros:
Nice selection of games Controls feel good Bright, Crisp screen SD card slot! Lightweight Cons:
Built in speaker sounds "tinny" No paddle control for the paddle games included. Low compatibility with legacy Atari 2600 games. Still no 2600 version of Frogger or Space Invaders Overall I really like this Portable Atari 2600.  I only wish they had some way to include a control for the paddle games, playing breakout or circus Atari with a dpad takes the fun right out of it.

Rating: (4 out of 5 Minicades)

Great topic, Rick! Many of the 7800 homebrews are just excellent.

I'll start with b*nQ, the Ken Siders' 7800 homebrew port of Q*bert. Q*bert is one of those titles that people either love or hate. I happen to love it and, in terms of b*nQ, you'll be hard pressed to find a better playing version on any classic system - certainly not an Atari system.

The controls are extremely faithful to the original and very accurate. The thing to remember about both b*nQ and Q*bert on the 2600 is that you must rotate your controller 45 degrees with the button facing the top. This mirrors the configuration of the arcade controller. It's awkward at first, but once you get used to it, you'll find the game is much easier. There is a normal controller mode too, but I always use the 45 degree setting.

The graphics are quite nice, with the bright colors and characters of the arcade fairly represented. In between level demos and high score screen are intact. Sound is the one weak spot. Like so many other 7800 games, TIA is the Achilles heel. Q*bert isn't a great sounding game to begin with but in bon*Q they are even harsher. Still, it's a decent approximation of the arcade sounds given the limitations of the system. I would love to see a Pokey version.

    PROs
    - Tight control and faithful gameplay
    - Good graphics
    - Best version on any Atari system

    CONs
    - TIA sound

I give it four and three quarters of five stars. Tons of fun and a must have for Q*bert fans!

CV has bgm which helps IMO. I kind of view them as even because the two player co-op is really fun for me on the 7800 version.

You know, I see Dark Chambers getting a ton of love, but I played it last weekend making it to level N or something like that, on standard difficulty, and it was soooo slow... We were playing 2 players, and it felt like there wasn't enough stuff to kill, and not enough food lying around to replenish health. I found myself wishing we would have fired up the NES and played Gauntlet II instead.

What am I missing with this game? I have the 2600 version as well, and that one impresses me more because that's about as good as you can do a Gauntlet type game on the 2600. The 7800 version though, while it looks good, just feels too slow for what the system can do.

They are so much smaller when you see them in person.... I think the color and the packaging had my Action Set I got in 1990 in my head as far as box size was concerned, but the thing is about as big as a small dictionary.

^^ That's pretty neat, but it must have cost hundreds of dollars and untold hours to put together and perfect.  Don't get me wrong, I think it's great....just not viable as a product for sale.

This list is out of my collection and what I've played on real hardware:

    1. Food Fight - This game is unique to Atari, and really fun to play.
    2. Ms. Pac Man - I can't fire up my 7800 without playing it.
    3. Centipede - Very close to the arcade, and the two player modes add to the fun and excitement!
    4. Dig Dug - I have a million ways to play this game, from the Famicom version to the Namco collections on just about every console, but the 7800 version is my favorite.
    5. Joust - This is really a three way tie for me, because I feel like I could put Asteroids or Robotron here too. This is another game that I can play a million ways, but I find myself enjoying the 7800 version the most. Great controls, graphics, and even sound.

5 worst (1 is the worst of the worst, etc)

    1. Impossible Mission - I can't tolerate a bugged game that is literally impossible to beat. It just sits on my shelf.
    2. Tower Toppler - To quote Classic Game Room: "There are two types of people who play Tower Toppler: People who hate fun, and people who hate themselves."
    3. Crack'ed - I hate games that should use a light gun but don't.
    4. Karateka - The controls and pace are terrible.
    5. Jinks - I never play this game, and if I did I would fire up Super Breakout instead.
