  1. 6,300 This one's going to take a bit of practice. I think my biggest challenge is the d-pad. I'm just not very good with the d-pad. I may need to pick up that 8bitdo arcade stick. BTW, I'm playing on a RetroPi.
  2. I was thinking that it was Princess Peach as well. Let's just say the the Princess has a really strong brand going on!
  3. Wow, after forty years, I learned that The Girl has a name 😮 Color me stupid. Thanks for posting the manual @Justin. According to Wikipedia, the character started her life with the name Lady and later changed to Pauline.
  4. Asteroids Atari 2600 Difficulty: Game 8, A/A High Score: 46,850 August 27, 2021
  5. Woohoo 🎉 Well done, everyone! I didn't think my score would hold up, and @Marco1019 came oh so close. Asteroids was a lot of fun, and I really liked game 8️⃣A. But even better than 🥇🏆 is the fact that I've learned to really appreciate a 2600 gaming classic. I always heard everyone rave about 2600 Asteroids over the years, but it was never a favorite of mine as a kid (disappointment with the controller experience and seeing colorful space rocks), and it stayed that way until this squad challenge. Asteroids now is the third game that I didn't like as a kid but really loved and embraced during my re-connect with the 2600 as an adult.
  6. 40 points! Oh man, I feel for you Marco 😄😆👍👏. I don't think I ever broke 45k again after my last posted score.
  7. Yes @HDN the arcade version of Asteroids Deluxe had the shield. Going back to the poll, while I voted for shield because it makes playing the game easier, I'm good with hyperspace since it's faithful to the original game. One thing I like about hyperspace in the 2600 Asteroids is that you don't randomly die just for deploying it. In the arcade version, you'd randomly die when you jumped out of hyperspace even if the space you appeared in was clear of asteroids. That was extremely annoying.
  8. @TrekMDvery nice! I need to play more Intellivision ❤️ It's great to see Evercade get more game collections and the prices are fantastic. I don't have one but it's cool to see the positive reception it has garnered.
  9. As Rick posted, we met up for lunch in Portland on Saturday. While there, I visited four stores in the Portland area and one in Vancouver, all for the first time. This is what I picked up:
  10. 46,850 A small improvement, but this run, I was so full of hope of breaking 50k 😆 I mean, I crossed 40k with my first life and was feeling real good about myself and dreaming of crossing 50k, and then promptly lost the next three only after a few thousand more points. As the saying goes, don't count your 🐥 before they are hatched.
  11. 👍 ❤️ The art on those red box 2600 games presented such a huge departure from the artsy illustrative type art of the earlier Atari games.
  12. 80s? We've been mostly sunny as well but in the 70s and a few days in the 60s. Temperatures are stepping down and looking like we're easing into autumn.
  13. 44,850 YASS finally broke the 40k barrier. I have to admit that I didn't care much for Asteroids in the past. I think it was my disappointment as a kid seeing solid colorful asteroids instead of mimicking of arcade vector graphics (homebrew Space Rocks is awesome in this regard) and having to use a joystick which never felt natural with this game. But 40 years later, I'm having a blast playing it. Just as I re-discovered 2600 Pac-Man and absolutely loved it after hating it for nearly 40 years, I'm really glad that I finally discovered the joy of these games. Add, too, Galaxian--another game I hated on but became a fan of recently through playing the 2600 version. About the controller, the Starplex doesn't feel quite right but way better than any other controller I have for playing Asteroids. One of these days, I'll have to commission an all-button 2600/7800 controller than fits me. I traded my all-button Retrogameboyz controller with Rick because I got hand cramps from using it. The button spread on the Starplex is a bit wider than the Retrogameboyz one and my hands are not cramping, but it's still not totally comfortable.
  14. 39,490 -- so close to breaking 40k and that #$@#% saucer shoots me down.
  15. Road trips during the 80s was a lot of reading as Rick mentioned and playing games like I Spy... and just goofing around and talking. I had some battery powered portable games but don't recall taking them. Yes, we live in a golden age where content/games are plentiful and you can play games of all generations with relative ease. But there is such a thing as too much. Just like people browse Netflix looking for something to watch and end up not watching anything, I think the same thing happens with games for some of us (namely me) who have a lot of games available to play. Community high score challenges are really beneficial in that regard where someone has made the choice for you.
  16. I have the portable, and it comes preloaded with 80 games. Most are the original 2600 games.
  17. Drinking buddies! That explains the 🍺 🙂 I was wondering about that. Anyhoo, this is a great piece of art. Thanks, @MaximumRD!
  18. No no, not nice job. I got the low hanging fruit. Tell me who the rest are... please? 😄
  19. retro gamer street cred 😆 33,910 -- finally broke 30k. My current strategy is to clear the asteroids as quickly as I can and avoid having to confront the saucers.
  20. Who are all these characters? Back -- (1) drinking knight (2) Xena Warrior Princess (3) Thor (4) Drogo (5) reddish woman Middle -- (6) He-Man (7) Red Sonja (8) blonde dude with black eyebrows (clearly, the hair is not natural) Front -- (9) doofus looking dude (10) Conan (11) Asterix (12) one eyed man (13) Elric of Melniboné?
  21. I played with the Starplex controller. I wish the controller I traded with you by Retrogameboyz would have worked better for me. I found that I prefer the buttons on that one over the Starplex buttons.
