  1. Mine Storm Vectrex Difficulty: Default High Score: 143,315 September 30, 2022
  2. Last Saturday, I went to PAX West with my son. I wasn't planning to go this year, but when I found out that there was a panel featuring Ken and Roberta Williams, I had to go. The panel was titled Adventure Games: Heroes and Legends. The Williams were joined by Jane Jensen, Al Lowe, Ron Gilbert, and Dave Gilbert. I took this photo before the panel started. They all masked up once they started speaking. The lady on the far left is the local gamer who organized the panel.

To be honest, I've never played a King's Quest game. However, I remember seeing it on my friend's PC Jr. back in the day. I have played the first Gabriel Knight and first Leisure Suit Larry games. Besides those, I have not (yet) played any of the other games made by these legends of adventure gaming.

It was a fanboy thrill to see these folks. I got in line about 90 minutes before the panel started in order to ensure myself a good seat. It was a good thing I did that because the place was packed.

These gaming industry legends and their works are an inseparable part of my childhood, and I cherish them for that alone. I wish I could have gotten a photo with them, but oh well. This will have to do (for now).

Wow!  That's an all-star lineup for sure.

I'm one of those folks that was 100% into PC gaming in the late 80's and 90's.  I've played every King's Quest, every Space Quest, etc.  In a forum like this, I often feel like that's a lost era of gaming.  While everyone else was doing SNES and Genesis, etc, there I was in the PC world.

Anyway, that's a great picture and I'm glad you shared it.

Me, too. I swear we are brothers from a different mother 😂 I went from the 2600 straight to computer gaming during the 80s and beyond (800 --> ST --> PC). I skipped all the Nintendo and Sega consoles, dabbled a little with the first PlayStation during the late 90s and finally switched to mostly console gaming with the Xbox 360.

The 80s and 90s computer gaming was such a special time--new tech, new experiences. I am extremely appreciative that my childhood coincided with those times.

  3. @TrekMD you get the most interesting stuff! I'll have to check out that Lynx homebrew ❤️ Here are my recent pick-ups. six GB games from someone in a local gaming group Lynx homebrews from Songbird. Another gamer posted that he bought Wyvern Tales. I had it on my wishlist, and he told me that only one copy remained, so I got the last copy of this batch. GB and Playstation games from ebay Switch OLED model mount by Fixture Gaming with John Riggs skin. I picked it up at PAX (the only thing I got at PAX this year). I was pleasantly surprised to see the mount for the OLED Switch at Fixture's booth as it's not yet listed on their website. In my rush in and out of the house, 🤦‍♂️ I can't remember where I put the box and holder so here's a placeholder photo.
  4. Recent pick-ups -- the OG Xbox games are from a local store and the rest are from ebay or mercari. I'm happy to have added three more GB/GBC games with rumble.
  5. 17,500 First run (playing on the Atari Flashback Portable). Those double balls 🤬 I've also attached a photo of my copy that was signed by Garry a few years ago. I think it was the last PRGE before the covid shutdown.
  6. I ordered Vectrexians and it arrived yesterday. I love Galaxian, and I heard that this is a good one. Not shown below but the game came with an overlay.
  7. Same -- I think it was about five or six years ago when I first got an iPad. I decided to make it a portable gaming machine but gave up the endeavor. I couldn't get over not having a physical controller. I looked into some options that were available (e.g., joystick attachment) but none seemed worthwhile.
  8. Show n tell 🙂 Looks like I have 7 GBC games in the black shell.
  9. Really?!? If the game comes in a black cartridge that it means it plays on the OG? That is rad! I always wondered why some GBC game cartridges came in a black shell while others were in a clear case.
  10. Thanks for the list, Rick! I forgot to mention that I actually played a little bit of SML. I think I made it to 2-3 or something like that. It was the first time ever that I spent more than 2 minutes playing a Mario platformer. It was neat, and I want to try to get into platform games. I had heard about DK and about unlocking levels. I also read about Space Invaders and got a Super Game Boy to try some of these GB games with Super Game Boy content.
  11. I just returned from a trip to Los Angeles. I had a lot of fun playing some OG Game Boy games on my new Game Boy Color with IPS screen. Of course, there's Tetris. Then I played Nemesis for the first time since the early 90s when I first bought the OG Game Boy. I broke 100k which I believe is a first, but it doesn't have a persistent scoreboard, and my score disappeared after like 3 three seconds. I'm getting better with age ✌️ Fine wine anyone? I played Bomberman GB for the first time, and actually, this was the first time I played any Bomberman game. I'm still playing through the training levels but having a lot of fun. I see now why people love the series. It also has the cutest pause screen I also played Mario Picross for the Game Boy. I found out about Picross a few months ago, and the Game Boy version is a lot of fun. A few weeks ago, I had some quick fun with the original Game & Watch for the Game Boy. What are your favorite Game Boy games❓
  12. I wish I still had my original GB, but I gave that away many years ago to a little boy. I re-acquired an original GB last year. I still have my original GB Color. However, now that I have a GBA and have been spoiled by the IPS screen on it, I can't go back to the screens on the unmodded handhelds.
  13. Yet more Game Boy stuff. X has been on my wishlist, and I ran across a cheap CIB copy on ebay. I now have three CIB JP Game Boy games (Mario Picross games being the other two). I recently ordered the Everdrive for the Game Boy. They are very difficult to come by lately, and I signed up for a stock notification at a couple of stores (Everdrivestore and stoneagegamer). I wasn't quick enough the first couple of times, but on my third notice, I was able to secure one. I splurged for the high end model. Lastly, with my growing Game Boy games, I bought some 3D printed trays on Etsy for easier storage. The trays are certainly more convenient, nicer to look at, and shelf friendlier than a shoe box. The gray one is for the original GB games. The black tray is for GBC games, multicarts, and hacks/homebrews. The yellow is the GBA tray. I only have a half dozen GBA games and that includes one multicart. I got an Everdrive for the GBA very early so I've managed to keep the GBA cartridge count to a minimum.
  14. I agree with you @CrossBow about flash carts. It's a great way to play the games and identify the ones you may want to collect physical copies of. @RickR we are living the same lives it seems 😂 caring for mom, working, personal fitness. With the lack of time and energy, it's the really simple and short games that I find myself spending time playing. My current guilty(?) pleasure? Hoyle Card Games for the Game Boy Color. It comes with simple in-game instructions, and I learned to play Crazy 8. It plays very similarly to Uno and has been fun.
  15. Small pick up from a local store and adding to my Game Boy stash. I'm probably going to dramatically slow down on getting more cartridges in the future as I have an Everdrive for the GB/GBC on the way.
  16. When David Crane and Garry Kitchen hinted that they were recruiting HSW, I thought the Yars sequel might come through that channel. No matter, I'm looking forward to what this might be.
  17. I bought the GBA from a local gamer turned game store owner. He modded a GBA with a new case and I believe an IPS v2 screen. The screen is very nice and supports multiple brightness levels. I tried but can't go back to the original GB and GBC anymore to play GB and GBC games. We sorta take these things for granted now, but man, display technology has come such a long ways.
  18. I finally played a GBA game--well, sorta. It's the Atari Anniversary, so just a bunch of oldie but classic arcade games from back in the day. I found it to be a very fun collection, and the games played pretty well. It's definitely one of those games suited for short burst gaming sessions. The games all sound great and look great. Some even let you rotate the screen for that vertical orientation. Even with a dpad, they all played very well. I was most surprised by how well Centipede played--movement and control felt very natural. Tempest was the biggest surprise and not in a good way. Animation in some of the stages slowed down noticeably. I guess Tempest is processor intensive? I wasn't expecting to see a slow down of an old game running on pretty good hardware. Out of all the games in the collection, I think I had the most fun with Battlezone, Missile Command, and Centipede. While I'm a big Asteroids fan, I have a hard time playing it with anything but an all-buttons controller. I have the Atari Anniversary Redux for the PlayStation but have never played it. In any event, I've been spending some time with the GBA lately and look forward to trying an actual native GBA game.
  19. Neat! I never read the official PlayStation magazine and only read PSX and another that I can't remember. Reading magazines were such a fun experience--if only they were easy to store and didn't take up so much space. PDFs are nice but of course not the same.
  20. I added a few more Game Boy games. The two JP games are repros with English translation. They looked interesting so wanted to give them a spin. I got the bottom 3 games for $5. Two are probably some cheap Chinese compilations but just got them out of curiosity. At some point, I'll probably get an Everdrive for the Game Boy.
  21. I looked up some play videos, and, yes it definitely looked the part. PS3 and Xbox360 games are mostly very cheap and there are many excellent games. It's the console generation that I've spent the most time playing even to this day.
  22. Lately, I've been adding to my Game Boy collection. What is it about handhelds? They're so cute and don't take up much storage space 🙂 I think I may have owned Motorcross Madness back in the day. For $5, I took another chance. Hopefully, I didn't hate it too much.
  23. EDIT: oops, I just noticed that this was the non-gaming pickup thread 🤦‍♂️ mea culpa
  24. I just had a very fun interaction and a brief travel down Memory Lane 🙂

Back in the 80s, I was friends with a guy name George. He had an older brother and two younger sisters. It turned out that the older of the two sisters lives in my neighborhood and ours kids attended the same school and our kids have become very close lately. She and her son just walked to my house to give me a box of pears as a thank you for taking her son (and my son) to the airport this Sunday for their high school graduation trip to California.

We had a short chat on the porch, and she randomly mentions this small black box with a TV screen and that I had lent it to her brother back in the 80s (I don't recall lending it to him), and she and her sister played the heck out of it. I knew immediately what she was talking about and brought out my Vectrex. Her eyes beamed. I had never known that she was into playing games. She was very shy and I had never heard her say anything when we were kids. She said she never forgot it, and it was a very positive part of her childhood. Her family did not have computers nor video games. I told her that I'd lend it to her again, so she can relive those days.

So random and unexpected but so cool! And it was our kids who brought us together for this chat.

  25. It finally feels like summer in Seattle -- sunny and mid 70s yesterday and 80 today. What better way to kick off summer the American 🇺🇸 way than firing up the grill? I hosted a burger party for about a doze teens and their leaders from my church on Friday. It's always fun to see young people have a good time, but it can tire you out 🙂

A funny side note, my grilling set off the smoke alarm in the house behind us 😂 They had the door to their backyard open, and closed it once they figured out what was going on. Houses are built so close to one another.

I've got a killer turkey burger recipe if you need it.  Lean poultry makes the doc happy.

Note:  Use a stand mixer if you have one.  It makes this super easy.  Cooking these outside on the grill gives them that smoky flavor that makes them better IMO.

      Ingredients

      1 lb ground turkey

1 cup sharp cheddar cheese shredded

      1 egg

      3/4 cup Panko bread crumbs

      1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon All Purpose Seasoning (or favorite seasoning salt)

      4 brioche buns

      Instructions

Preheat the grill to 400°F and clean grill.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the turkey, cheese, egg, Panko crumbs, Worcestershire sauce and All Purpose Seasoning. Using your hands, mix everything together until they are well combined. If a little dry add a little water until the right consistency or if too wet, add more Panko accordingly.

Form the mix into 4 equal size patties to fit the size of your buns.

Cook the burgers for 4 to 5 minutes on each side depending on thickness.
