For this challenge, we're taking on SqueakyBox and Atari's take on the classic Stern arcade title Berzerk! When Atari announced its acquisition of a dozen Stern Electronics retro game IPs in March 2023, including Berzerk, everyone wondered how long it would take for the publisher to release BERZERK: RECHARGED. Nine months later, a frenetic twin-stick shooter with a divisive art style and play mechanics. As we wrote in Issue 01 of the Club VCS Fanzine preview, the design has received a mixed response from fans. Some have likened the player character to a ‘50s sci-fi version of Conan O’brien. Others pine for a more traditional take on the robots and Evil Otto. Taken on it's own, BERZERK: RECHARGED is a solid twin-stick and a lot of fun. But don't take my word for. Join in the challenge and fight like a robot! Play in ARCADE mode from level one and take the game as far as you can for the high score! Mockduck Posted March 4 Report Posted March 4 Here's my first score: 104,960 My problem with the way Berzerk Recharged does its high score system is the same issue I have with Quantum: Recharged: The bonuses become mandatory for the leaderboards. You get +100% for having one life, +100% for no powerups, and +100 for no dash, meaning a 25,000 score ends up at 100,000. Meanwhile, to get 100,000 points without the bonuses you'd have to get so much further through the game as to be impractical. I went further than I'd ever gone before this weekend and ended up with an unmodified 57,000. That woulda been at least 114,000 if I'd just ditched the dash, up to 228,000 if I'd used the full bonuses. It means that in order to get the highest score you HAVE to use the score modifiers, which seems like the wrong way to do it. They should be maybe +25% at best. Cryptocoffee13 Posted March 5 Report Posted March 5 I keep getting worse the more I play. Definitely more frustrating than Mars Recharged. Not going to bust a controller over this. Lol Sabertooth, Justin and Smell Dawg 2 1
damon Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 Here's my first shot at it. I agree they probably give too much bonus with the bonuses but I'd still play it this way anyway. Smell Dawg, Cryptocoffee13, Justin and 1 other 4
damon Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 2nd Attempt and color adjustment. This would be a lot easier with a capture card or if I got better with my phone. Justin, Sabertooth and Smell Dawg 3
Cryptocoffee13 Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 This is annoying going backwards Everytime Justin, Smell Dawg and Sabertooth 3
