  1. 🤔 TV connections and Control Pads for 2-Players would’ve stepped up the Lynx’s style to a true game system! And Atari would’ve had a true home console to fight in the 16-Bit wars!

I have this theory that most handheld gaming wasn’t done walking around with a portable in your pocket.

I think the best handheld gaming was done at home, lying on the floor with snacks and a movie playing on the tv in the background on a cozy Saturday afternoon. Or on long car rides during summer road trips, chilling out in the back seat with a drink, and holding it comfortably in your lap. So how much did “pocket size” really matter?

Lynx and Switch share a similar take on portable gaming, the idea of a full-blown game system portable enough to stuff into your bag and take with you anywhere.

GameBoy came out at about the same time as Lynx, but they had two different ideas of what a portable game system should be. GameBoy became popular using the WalkMan approach of being tiny, simple, and sorta inexpensive. Lynx couldn’t fit into your pocket as easily, but offered more in terms of graphics and a full-color screen.

  2. 👽 There’s a lot of hate for E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, and yet so many of us have wonderful memories of growing up playing this game. Nothing has left its mark on the legacy of Atari quite like E.T. It may not be the top 2600 game, but it has a lot of heart.

PS - I also think that "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is a far bigger stinker (but still had fun with it),

IIRC, there was a guide for Raiders of the Lost Ark in one of the classic video game magazines. That made it MUCH easier to play and complete, which likely led to its popularity at the time.

  3. Even through a national pandemic, Atari survives. Bringing the fun and joy of new memories into homes across our great land for almost 50 years. Yars’ Revenge is one of my favorite games on the current Flashback consoles we found today at Sam’s Club. Who remembers The Walking Dead episode with Eugene playing Yars’ Revenge after the zombie apocalypse telling of the Yars’ attempt to exact revenge on the evil Qotile for the destruction of Razak IV?

The one on the left: Check out my new smartwatch!  It plays games, too!  LOL.  Only in a time when bigger was suppose to mean better.  To their defense, the bigger units seem to outlast modern electronics these days.

  5. 🏸 Super Breakout Squad Challenge is up! We're playing Double Cavity Breakout on Game 5, this will be fun!

  7. 🤖 The Atari 7800 was made to play our favorite arcade games like Robotron: 2084. It can push a ton of sprites all over the screen with rarely any slowdown or flicker. It’s an overlooked treasure that’s capable of so much more than you might think. What are your favorite arcade games on home systems?large.1502184670_Robotron2014forAtari7800.jpg

When Pac-Man on the Atari 8-bit computers came out, it was really something special.  A game that you could proudly show off to your friends.

I think Colecovision Donkey Kong was also pretty special.

And to think....I never even knew the 7800 EXISTED until the early 2000's!  What a shame.

  8. 🚘 What’s your favorite thing to bring with you on a summer road trip? Atari Lynx has a small game library, but many of the games are really good! Once things return to normal this will be my 31st summer bringing the Lynx on my summer road trip. I do more driving than riding in the back seat these days, but summer wouldn’t feel complete without rainy afternoons playing California Games, RoadBlasters, Ninja Gaiden or Blue Lightning.

  9. 😎 Had a nice conversation w/ BTB & Atari Creep yesterday. Starting interesting new projects. The coming year is going to be fun.

  10. 📖 Who loves comic books? Collecting is about enjoying every part of the game - the gameplay, the artwork, flipping through the instruction manual and diving into the story and the world of the game. Atari was my introduction to comics, some of my favorite Atari games come with DC Comics ashcans inside.

Well...I used to collect X-Men and other Marvel comics.  But my favorite was a six-comic book set called Dawn.  I loved the artwork in that one.

As for Atari comics I only have the Centipede one that came with the game.

  12. 🏸 Super Breakout may be “the most Atari” of Atari games. There’s beauty in its simplicity. A ball & paddle smashing bricks. The analog feel of a good set of paddle controllers smoothly moving that paddle across the screen delivers a hand/eye connection to the game unlike any other.

A nice set of paddles and some classics like "Super Breakout", "Circus Atari", and "Astroblast" is an experience unavailable on any other system.

  13. 🏓 Quarantined on a cozy Saturday night playing Breakout with my girl. This is the stuff good memories are made of.

      Nice!

We've been watching a lot of movies lately.  The selection last night was the third X-Men movie.  It was kind of a stinker, but entertaining to watch.  There was one very funny scene that went by in a flash -- Colossus carrying a gigantic CRT TV under one arm very casually at Professor X's school.

That little girl will remember and cherish that moment for the rest of her life, guaranteed.  Kids remember loved ones spending time with them doing anything.  I know I still do.

My wife and I have an "adopted" daughter who has kids which we have "adopted" as our grandchildren.  The oldest one at age 4 played Frogger on my 2600.  To this day she still remembers that and she's 11 now.  We now play Minecraft (her favorite) when they come to visit.  All of the grandkids visited us around the end of February and the five kids all played a video game of some sort.  The NES was out, the 7800 was hooked up, the 360 got some playtime, even the 5200 seen some game time.

  14. Got em! Added unopened Swordquest Earthworld to my collection 😍🔥🔥 Sometimes you just need a new game in your collection to raise your spirits! I always loved this 2600 box design.

It is possible, although I don't know for sure.  I have a Realsports Boxing that for sure came from an Atari.io contest.

  18. 🤯 How did WB own Atari, DC comics & Looney Tunes, & not see that games can be cartoons & characters

It's not even about "capitalizing on existing ip" with games based on Warner franchises, it's simply how they missed the potential of 8-bit gaming as a platform for characters and storytelling that we saw explode with Super Mario Bros, Zelda, Metroid, etc. Atari had all of the components and nobody put the pieces together.

    3. RickR

      RickR

And another thought on this topic.  Atari never followed up properly on the great games they did create.  For example, Adventure is one of my all-time favorite games.  Most gamers of my vintage also love the game.  Yet Atari never followed up on it.  It wasn't until Nintendo "Legend of Zelda" for NES that we saw a real continuation on the theme.  What a waste.

    4. Atari 5200 Guy

      Atari 5200 Guy

I often wondered that myself.  There was a LOT they could have done and got something decent out of killing 2 birds with one stone.  They could have used a DC comic series and made an adventure game out of them, they could have had some Looney Tunes characters be in some sort of arcade style game.  There was lots of opportunities.  The only one I seen was the DC comics packed inside some 2600 games but I often wondered why just the 2600 titles?  How come the 5200 and Atari home computer people were not included with that?  I guess we weren't special enough.  😞
