Has a homebrew been a goal?  I've started twice on a 2600 homebrew, but stopped due to lack of time.  One of these days....

In any case, fun is what keeps me here.

To your point (somewhat, I think): I've had discussions with other gaming friends about the C64 & some ports that were rushed & turned out awful. By the time the C64's capabilities were truly explored and pushed to some of its limits, it was too late. (There were other factors to Commodore's demise, but I digress).

The more SMB ports I see to other 8-Bit systems the more I believe the collapse of the video game industry and the success of the NES have less to do with tech and more to do with creativity and the philosophy of "what can video games be?". The way the first few waves of NES games reset the way we think about and play video games speaks volumes to what Atari and others should have seen. It was far more in line with being a toy company with games like SMB becoming franchises, than what Atari was doing with a focus on computers and being the next IBM.

And that's what makes it so frustrating.  Simple changes would have redeemed it.

I agree with Rick. There have been a few color hacks that make it look so much better.

That's right -- not cheap.  It's also very difficult to choose a trustworthy company and try to choose a color you can live with for the next 30 years.

The colors.  Blue maze, black background would have gone a long way towards making it look like the arcade version.

@MaximumRD I basically see two different tracks of Atari technology (up until Lynx). On one side you had the 2600 with all its games and peripherals which begat the 7800. On the other track was the 400/800 computer which spawned the Atari 5200, and later the Atari XE. It would have been nice for the XE to be the all-in-one 7800 Computer Keyboard fully compatible with the library of Atari 8-Bit Computer games and accessories. Instead they gave us an entirely new system to compete for shelf space against the 2600 and 7800, not to mention NES and Sega.

That would have been cool I think, always liked the wacky look of the XEGS, never did end up with one but I have a pretty nice 5200 collection.
