    Where's my reaching stick?

When I worked for HBO, the company leased a few floors in a new building in downtown Seattle. I thought the building was telling me I was too fat because I could not get out of my car after I parked. Those parking spots were narrow! I was driving a Toyota Corolla, and I couldn’t open the door far enough to get out from the driver side. After a moment of panic (there wasn’t another spot available in the building), I managed to get out through the passenger side door. The city building code is just wrong as far as the permitted size of parking spaces go.

    Wrong shirt for this photo.

I’m sure Mick says thank you 😛 😆

  2. During the covid pandemic, I had gotten in touch with Joe Decuir and exchanged emails with him. He told me about the Seattle Retro Computing Society (SRCS) and how he usually attends all the meet ups. I found out that SRCS resumed their monthly meeting a few months ago. He promised to sign my Atari stuff if I brought it to him, so two months ago, I attended my first SRCS. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to make it. I tried again in July, and something else came up last minute, and he didn't make it. This time, I confirmed with him a week ago that he was going to attend.

Although I had a wedding to attend in the afternoon, i grabbed my son (who took a class from Joe) and we went to the meeting. When I walked in, the meeting organizer informed me that Joe was waiting for me. I promptly introduced myself, and we spoke for a while. Well, he did most of the talking and told me a bunch of stuff. I'm blown away by his generosity, openness, and eagerness to engage anyone who wants a few minutes of his time.

Here's the stuff I brought for him to sign. I think it's super cool that someone of his stature in the history of computing lives in the area and is very active. The fact that he was part of the group that designed the 800 (my first computer love) is what prompted me to seek him out. @RickR I confirmed with Joe that he was willing to meet with us for lunch so come on up next month.

The enemy speed seems to ramp way up once you get all the treasure I think.  It's a great game!

It is a great game! That's why I love these high score challenges as they get me to play games that I probably wouldn't play otherwise. I am curious what the official Venture release is like and how this improves on it.

Great score!  I have to try to play some more!

Thank you and yes, everyone should play it more. You have a week remaining 🙂

  4. I'm taking the wait and see approach. The 2600+ has no practical application for me as I play on original hardware with a tube TV. I also prefer to use SD card cartridges whenever possible, so I'd be curious about compatibility with the Harmony Encore, Dragonfly, and the 7800 GD.

I got a Retron 77 when it came out just to have one because I thought it looked cute. I may end up getting the 2600+ eventually.

Some of them I have as other titles or publishers but I'm after the red labels because of they are related to the junior model directly.  It is because of the junior models that these red labels even exist...or so it seems.  Its also nice to have the variations of similar games.

I had no idea that the red boxes had a connection to the Jr. The more you know--thanks!

I've been after Choplifter, Tiger-Heli, and Galaxian for my FC.  Not that they are hard to come by.  I just haven't been ready to blow money on them yet.  Sweet shell!!

I had been eyeing ebay for Galaxian in particular, and then this lot came up. I paid $50 for the lot so just a few bucks per cart. There are a few local gamers who from time to time sell FC and SFC cartridges, and because the prices are usually very good, I usually pick up a few mostly because I think the FC and SFC cartridges are so cool.

Ah, cool.  I be those went fast!

Surprisingly, it took a few days for all ten to be sold. Hope to see you again at PRGE.

Very nice to know there is an adapter, thanks!  I assume it doesn't work with a front-loader NES though, right?  Top loader or fake NES (like Retron)?

The instructions say it works with a front loader. There is a ribbon attached to the adapter that you pull on to remove it from the front loader. I have a top loader NES, so no problem there. I would expect it work on a Retron since it's a Hyperkin product as well.

This is the cheapest adapter I found that was made by a reputable company. I've seen other adapters go for $25-$30.

  8. @RickR I don't have a Famicom but I picked up the 60-to-72 pin adapter by Hyperkin. But the stupid thing isn't working 🙁 Instructions say to press the reset button 4-8 times if the game doesn't start. I tried four cartridges and none of them are working. That's disappointing. I may need to buy the adapter from the guy that sold me the Famicom cartridges.

Update: The adapter got so many good review so I went and read a few. One particular reviewer shared the fix and I've confirmed that it works:

It doesn’t state this on the box or the inserts included inside, but you need to place the famicom cartridge backwards, with the cover art facing the opposite of the top loader or “toaster” loader. Placing the cartridge the same way will not work and you’ll be left scratching your head. There’s a bit of a crunchy sound when inserting the cartridge but it works fine if you follow the proper way to insert the cartridge. Also works on Retron/Classiq II clone systems, as well as actual NES systems. There are a few caveats such as sound effects not being exactly perfect or the audio being slightly muted, but it’s a small price to pay to enjoy playing Famicom games.

I'm with you on this.  Too hot!  The next several days are going to be a challenge here.  I'm wearing shorts to work, whether they allow it or not 🙂  But hey, there is some solace in suffering together, right?

    Stay cool, my friends.

Mothership called you back to the office?

  10. I picked up a batch of Famicom cartridges from a local gamer/reseller. I find the Famicom cartridge colors and labels fascinating, and I generally buy them for that reason. I got this batch because of Choplifter, Galaxian, Popeye, Lode Runner, and Tetris. The rest looked interesting enough.

I also had another local gamer service my Genesis and SNES. I haven't put much time with them, but what little time I did have really impressed me, especially the Genesis. I heard that the Model 2 benefits from the triple bypass audio upgrade, so I got that in addition to have it recapped. A couple of years ago, I bought the cheapest SNES that was offered by a local reseller. It was a little gross looking--a bit dingy and yellowed. At the time, I didn't care because I was only intending to play one game on it (NBA Jam TE). Now that I'm getting more into it, I decided to give it a makeover with a new clear shell and recapped. The old case was given the retrobrite treatment and came out looking pretty nice.
