The 5200 is a great console on its own right.  I didn't get one until about 10 years ago but I have to say that have really enjoyed playing its games.  In fact, it is impressive as the game library for the system is rather excellent.  The majority of the games are very good to excellent.  I know some people will hate on the system because of the controllers and the lack of self-centering but there are alternatives.  I use with Wico controller to address that issue for games like Pac-Man that require more precise control.  Overall, though, this is a fun system with a great library of games.

    extra guy @ 20k?
I played with a pro-line (ball mod on right) and noticed both guns and bombs fired at the same time.

I held controller sideways with index finger hooking the fire button on the bottom. unlimited ammo unlike the guys in origonal Star Wars who didn't want to waste a shot at the escape pod holding the droids.

I figured you could use any stick or pad for this if that's the case.

it's also interesting to note that the difficulty settings are screen-selectable and the manual switches are only for backward-compatibility with 2600 games

Hi all!  I had been reading on the Atari.io site but had not realized there were forums so I decided to join once I discovered them!  I'm a big time retro game gamer and collector.  My collection goes from retro to modern:  Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, Atari Lynx, Atari Jaguar, Mattel Intellivision, Vectrex, NES, Sega Genesis, Sega Dreamcast, Xbox (original), Nintendo GameCube, GBA, Nintendo DS, PSP, PS4, and Retron N5. I also have a portable 2600 and a Sega Nomad.

My first system was the Atari 2600 all those years ago and I was mostly an Atari guy early on.  I didn't get other systems until later on.  Atari systems are still my favorites but I do admit the Sega systems are also awesome to play on.

Over the years I have gotten more involved in the retro video game community and I have written reviews for games and books.  My most recent review if the review for that fantastic book from Tim Lapetino, The Art of Atari.  You can check that out here:  http://tinyurl.com/zexkux5

I look forward to participating in the forum and getting to know folks here.

While this is about the 7800 I have to throw in my two cents worth on the various 2600 models AND the 7800 as well in 2600 mode.  The 7800 as we all know contains the same processors found in a 2600.  So, basically, it is a 2600 with bonus features for a different breed of games.

With that said, I have a JR, 4-switch Woody, and a 7800.  All of them vary a bit in color including the 7800.  The brightest one of the bunch is the Woody model.  My 7800 seems to have a dull sharpness when in 7800 mode.  Then again the many revisions the console went through (there were three that I know of) might be some of the reasons for the slight color difference.  The 2600 itself went through many revisions.  Mine's board is a Rev 13 and there are later revisions with a timer chip in it for the Game Select and Reset switches.

I did a small test on my 2600 models and the 7800 with a 2600 game...E.T.  And there are some slight color differences.  On 7800 the green forest areas are a tad bit dark and not as vibrant, on the woody model the color is more vibrant and lively, and on the JR model the colors were a little pale until I re-adjusted it to match the Woody model.

There are some other things that might need to be mentioned about the 7800 as well.  There are reports of the 7800 motherboard literally cracking due to the force needed to insert and remove cartridges.  Some revisions have a plastic piece on the underside of the motherboard directly under the cartridge slot to help keep that from happening.  The shell can also become brittle and crack too so be sure to support it a bit when removing any carts.  The plastic is not the strongest ever made even being a bit lower grade than that used for the 5200.

With all that being said, the 7800 is still a good console and I would have loved to see what it could have done if the likes of third-party developers Nintendo had for the NES would have developed for the 7800.  I'm sure that it could have done Gradius, Life Force, Super Mario Bros., and similar games very well.  I also really like the color tones of most of the 7800 games especially Asteroids, Galaga, Xevious, Robotron, and a few others.  It has this VGA-like visual before PCs got VGA so the MARIA graphics chip is very impressive.

There is a video somewhere online where someone made a popular NES adventure game on the 7800.  All it contains is the full map and the Link character...but it is still very impressive.  It is a very underdeveloped system and I doubt we have seen everything it has to offer.  If the 7800 was to get a Pioneer LD add-on then there is no telling what all it can really do.

You have an awesome system!  Now all you have to do is enjoy it.  That is the how the full circle works.  You might hit Lance up sometime as I believe he has used 7800 games but don't quote me on that.  And since his accident I don't know how easy it would be for him to get to them.

Console Wars Heat Up As Zenith Unveils Gamespace Pro

LINCOLNSHIRE, IL—With next-generation video game systems such as the Xbox One and the Playstation 4 hitting stores later this month, the console wars got even hotter today as electronics manufacturer Zenith announced the release of its own console, the Gamespace Pro, which arrives in stores Nov. 19. “With its sleek silver-and-gray box, double-analog-stick controllers, ability to play CDs, and starting price of $374.99, the Gamespace Pro is our way of saying, ‘Move over, Sony and Microsoft, Zenith is now officially a player in the console game,’” said Zenith CEO Michael Ahn at a Gamespace Pro press event, showcasing the system’s launch titles MoonChaser: Radiation, Cris Collinsworth’s Pigskin 2013, and survival-horror thriller InZomnia. “With over nine launch titles, 3D graphics, and the ability to log on to the internet using our Z-Connect technology, Zenith is finally poised to make some big waves in the video game world.” According to Zenith representatives, over 650 units have already been preordered.

For the difficulty switches, just remember B<->A  for (B)eginner <->(A)dvance
You can also use this picture to remember B.A.

Also, as far as controllers go, I highly, highly, highly recommend getting a Seagull 78 that allows you to use Sega Genesis controllers for 2 button games. The Europad looks nice, but the buttons lay too low for my taste (it's near impossible to push down both at once) and the SG78s are cheaper than the going rate for those.

Also, I think my coupon code in the video might still be good too (No, I don't get paid or any commission from Ed. He was just nice enough to make a code for me to give out.)

But don't get me wrong.  I also think it's one of the best all-time consoles.

But me personally, I use it to play 7800 games, and use a real 2600 (with composite out mod) to play 2600 games.  If someone forced me to choose one of the other, I'd take the 7800.
