  1. I just beat my first VCS game! It's a title called Spear Master. The gameplay is reminiscent of Buster Bros., where you split bouncing balls in half until they are eliminated. Spear Master lacks the platform element of that game and has a one-touch death mechanic that slows progress.

The game was built with Unity and is on VCS and Steam. It was a lot of fun all around and had a lot of polish.

  2. I just picked this up today. Going to get up bright and early to take it out and familiarize myself with it. #pumped

  3. I just realized that the building I spent five years of my career in was a stand-in for Caprica in the original Battlestar Galactica. My mind is blown!

Too bad it's being demolished as this is typed.

That Caprica scene from the original Battlestar Galactica always gave me 2600 Defender vibes

@Justin, spot on with that Defender cover! Someone in Atari's art department was a BSG fan!

  4. I know that H.E R.O. is a highly regarded title on the 2600.  Atari just announced a new game from H.E.R.O. programmer John Van Ryzin as a modern VCS exclusive!

  5. I picked up a Samsung GX TV in working order and decent cosmetic condition. I remember when these came out and it's as ridiculous now as it was then!

Pretty pumped on the sound and picture.

SWEET!  I've had my eye out for one of those, but never found one in the wild.  Nice pickup!

  6. I played the new(ish) Centipede arcade game - Centipede Chaos - this past week. It's a ticket redemption game and is quite fun. Anyone else tried it?

Where did you play that at? The arcade scene in the greater Seattle area is pretty lame.

That looks super awesome. I need to find one of these to play

@socrates63this was at a Dave & Busters. They had a lot of fun retro updates. Space Invaders, Giant PAC-MAN and Galaga, Four Player PONG, a new version of Rampage based on the recent film. Centipede was my favorite of the bunch despite the lack of a track ball.

  7. I spent the last hour or so cleaning and testing a box of loose carts that have been in a garage for years. So far all of them work in a stock Jr.  The third party carts were a little finicky in a 7800 and Retro 77. Atari carts all loaded with no issue.

I did have one mystery cart in the bunch. Any guesses?

Thanks for mentioning that it's a Sega.  I was wracking my brain trying to remember who made carts with those ridges.

      I'm going to guess "Tac-Scan".

    3. Sabertooth

      Sabertooth

It's not Tac-Scan @RickR. The variety of cart styles is one of my favorite aspects of the 2600!

      And the mystery cart is:

  8. I think this simple post on today's announcement of the Atari 400 has been my most viewed/liked post ever on X. Over 6k views, 130 likes, tons of comments and 24 reposts. Who knew the 400 MINI would elicit such excitement? It's bizarre.

It is weird!  Perhaps there's a huge untapped market for the 8-bit's.  It's been an ignored platform for such a long time.

  9. I was so excited to get this and then I saw the condition of the slip cover.

  10. I was thinking the other day, if you include the Flashback Friday titles, the modern VCS has had more official releases than the 5200, 7800, Jaguar, XEGS (labeled) and Lynx. Pretty crazy, right?

  11. I won a signed, limited edition Evercade as a part of a very cool fundraiser for EveryoneCanUK. I'm a big fan of the handheld and I'm stoked to win and donate to a good cause.  Here is their announcement via Twitter:

      WOW!  That's cool.  Enjoy.

  12. I'm planning a retro gaming "battle jacket" in a punk/metal style.  I'm currently agonizing over the image to use for the back patch which is the centerpiece of any battle jacket.  I've narrowed it down to Joust, Missile Command and RoadBlasters...

  13. I've been waiting for this notice for just over a week.

  14. I've finally completed all challenges in single player mode for Black Widow Recharged on the Atari VCS! It was probably the most satisfying gaming achievement of 2021 for me.

The VCS version has 40 challenges, compared to 30 in other versions of the game. The 10 VCS exclusive challenges were among the most difficult in the game. There were definitely some controller throwing moments!

What were your most satisfying gaming victories of 2021?!

Getting an Atari Jaguar has been the most satisfying gaming victory of 2021 for me.

Also being a part of the AtariAge Facebook 2600 Weekly High Score club has been a ton of fun.

And I'm mere millimeters away from completing Phoenix Wright 2 on DS.

There was apparently a "leak" on Atari's website yesterday. They've pulled the image and staff on their Discord are not denying or confirming.

It should be a good one and an interesting choice. This is an even deeper cut than Gravitar. I'm really liking this pivot from licensing to actually making games.

    3. RickR

      RickR

Agree.  This feels like a great step into a game that hasn't already been rehashed 100 times.  I love it.

I hope they do a new "Rescue on Fractalus" too, although I'll bet that involves permission from Lucasfilm.

    4. Justin

      Justin

@RickR I agree! Rescue on Fractalus would be fantastic! Yes I believe Lucas, which is now Disney, still owns the rights, but sometimes games like these can be licensed a bit more easily than you'd expect. It's when you run into franchises, say like Atari reissuing the Star Wars arcade, where licensing gets to be prohibitive. I'd love to see some games from the Lynx library "Recharged"!

  17. ICYMi: A great discussion on Stoneage Gamer Podcast with Digital Eclipse's Stephen Frost on Atari 50 and TMNT: Cowabunga Collection.

  18. ICYMI: All Atari published titles are 50% off in the VCS store this weekend only with code "ATARI50."

This includes all of the Recharged titles, Tempest 4000, Kombinera, VCS Vault 2, the 7800 games and the Command Series DOSBOX games.

I ended up buying two.  Breakout and Gravitar Recharged.  I took a long hard look at Tempest 4k, but I don't think that's a good one for me personally.

Glad that you could take advantage of the sale. Those two Recharged games are a steal at $5.

  21. ICYMI: Polymega and Atari are collaborating on a 2600/7800 module that will be compatible with the VCS. They are also bringing the full functionality of Polymega to the VCS.

    Discuss in ClubVCS!

It's great to see that Atari seems to be thriving and is becoming a viable company unlike the Amico people.

  22. ICYMI: This month we're celebrating 30 years of the Atari Jaguar with a special cross-platform Tempest 2000 Recharged Squad Challenge!

Play the game on Atari 50, BigPEmu or on original hardware!

  23. If you are on Instagram, there is a fun Atari-related hashtag, #FebrATARI. Each day in February, post a different Atari pic.

I'm doing A to Z Jaguar games as much as possible since 2023 marks the 30-year anniversary of the Jaguar's launch.

I'm also posting mine to Twitter:

  24. If you haven't turned on your VCS for a minute, take note of the new push notifications coming from Atari. Here's today's:
