Over the past six months we've been working on a Miniature Golf game called "Putt Eighteen." Now I know there had been several Miniature Golf games written for the Atari 8-bit, most of them in Basic. As usual I build these games up from assembly code and as you seen in the past, they can have much more going on with the screen. This game will be a combination concept of the 2600 Miniature Golf and the NES Mini Golf. It will have obstacles, several on screen at once, and can be one of 8 animated shapes, moving like the red square in the 2600 Miniature Golf. Has the hills with chevrons pointing which way is down hit. Also has sand traps, water hazards, and ledges. One or Two people will be able to play. Several courses will be included onto the cartridge. Currently it is a work in progress as things are being figured out during the game development. I am posting this game early to get some feed back about what people would like to see with this game.

Looks great so far peteym5! I love the title screen, it looks at least as good as anything on early NES! I can tell a lot of thought went into developing this game, it looks like a very nice golf game for the Atari 8-bit computers

 its going to be a awesome game. artisan21 did the splash screen, i designed the game, peter and i designed the courses. we squeezed perhaps three courses into a 16k atari-bit cart. peters skills are amazing.

 i designed the game. so that perhaps in the future, it can be ported over to the atari 5200 and the atari 7800.

 i designed four more holes for the forth course today. my plan when i designed the game, was that it would be small enough for the 5200, but also would be portable to the 7800, and there is really nothing like it on the atari 8-bit. wish us luck.

 i designed two more holes this week, artisan21 drew them, and peter modified them a bit, and we now have four full courses on a 16k cart. not bad at all. i had three more designed, but they were very complicated. for now we cannot fit them in. i hope to post a new teaser of the game today.

Looks great!

 

My suggestion would be to improve the sounds.  It sounds nothing like a real club hitting a golf ball.  Realistic sounds would really take it up a notch. 

 

There should also be an option to have a radius for the aiming cross hairs.  Being able to move them all the way across the screen makes it easier.  Limiting the radius would make a more challenging game. 

 

But honestly, it looks like a fun game.  I don't mean to nitpick.  It's a great achievement.

Here is the link to the video that we just posted to YouTube of the teaser trailer for Putt 18 Mini Golf. This game will come on a 16K cartridge. It has four full courses. Peter and I both collaborated on all four courses. The game was designed by me with input from our group, and we decided to do a series of 16K games with hopes of porting them over to the Atari 5200 and 7800. Enjoy!

 and thanks for the input. we are not quite done with the game yet, and perhaps there will be some changes. but we are limited by the size of the rom. we are doing a series of 16k games, with the hope in the future to port them over to the 5200, and the 7800. other wise we would have done them on a 32k board, which would have given us lots more options.

We have two options of aiming and putting the ball. One is place the cross hairs where you want to hit the ball, the ball moves at the cross hairs after you press and release the button. The longer you hold down the button, the more force you hit the ball. Like the power-force meter you see in other golf games. Second option is similar to 2600 Miniature Golf. The Cross hairs is replaced by a square, and press fire, makes the square jump to the ball position and the ball shoots off in the opposite direction. The further the square is from ball, the greater the force the ball is hit at.

 

It is not easy to get the sounds exact using the Atari 8-bit pokey chip, and probably needs a little more work. This game is a work in progress.

played the first course now completely, plays well. this might be a good game to port to the 5200. we will need feedback on that, if people are interested.

good idea, but i think we crammed 4 full 18 hole courses in, might not be room, but we shall see. its being beta tested heavy. so once we think we got it, there might be a bit of room, we shall see, thanks for the feedback.

Here is what I hope to be the final video for Putt 18 Miniature Golf.  This is showing holes from several different course and playing with two different putting modes. Game has 4 different eighteen hole courses. Options to use a pointer with power meter, or use the distance to ball for strength of the hit. The "Power Distance from Ball" mode that allows to play similar to the Atari 2600 Miniature Golf Putting Style. Can disable obstacles also. Will be available for both the Atari 8-bit XL/XE systems and Atari 5200 systems.

Thank you, I have been reading up on suggestions and comments. I thought about how I can make this game work with different controllers also. I remember an arcade trackball that you just rolled the track ball and your golf ball goes off in the same direction. 

An idea of a sequel or another miniature golf game is being considered at this time. I want to do something different beyond having more golf courses. Like ball rolling through tunnels or hitting over ramps.

I have looking at different miniature golf video games. Are you talking about the games your cross hairs move in a circle around where the ball is at? It may be possible to try this option, either have it controlled by joystick or paddles.

Kind of.  What I really mean is that the fact that you can move the reticule anywhere on screen makes it unrealistic and easy.  My thought was to limit how far away from the player you could  move the crosshair.

Here is Pool doing the Aim Sprite going around in a circle around the Q-Ball. Same Idea can probably work with Miniature Golf, but not allow the radius to be changed. I remember seeing a game that did this, but did not remember the title. Then when we were talking about pool, I searched for Pool games on other platforms and found this.

Ttying to make more realistic sounds on the Atari with Pokey chip isn't easy. Been trying to figure out how to get better clicks, thumps, hits, type sounds, but it does not seem easy with the distortions available. Maybe someone can get me some samples from a basic program for a better hitting ball effect.

During the early stages of development I was attempting to see how many different screens I can make available on the cartridge. I ended up with 72 screens for 4 18 hole courses onto a 16k ROM cartridge. I wanted to have something that will give people reasons to keep playing and give them something different each time they play. 

How many people will like to see another golf/miniature golf game based on this engine I designed for this game?

Hello. With everything that is going on in America and around the world right now because of the Novel Corona Virus Pandemic has great concern. Many of us are scared, concerned for family and friends, and many are out of work. I and along with my team hope that everyone. If you do not need to, stay home if you do not need to go out. I am working as a security guard and my community has not been hard hit yet, and not dealing with much chaos yet.  I need to deal with people and travel to and from work by metro bus. My job is considered essential. I try to wear gloves when I can. 

I know many of us within the Atari Community have been around for a long time and seen a lot. I know many do recover from the illness from Covid-19. The important thing is we keep ourselves safe until a vaccine has been created and more medical infrastructure is in place. These things do take time. Take Care. Stay Home, and enjoy some video games.

Some very exiting things have been happening for Putt Eighteen Miniature Golf since its release in 2017. It has become one of our fastest selling games that exceeded 100 total cartridges last month between the 3 platforms. It has been released on: Atari 8-bit, 5200, and 7800.

Last night I just got done putting together a video for the Atari 8-bit & 5200 showing a few seconds of play from all 72 holes from the 4 different course that are in the cartridge game.
