Aquaventure’s Pirate Links

In Aquaventure you play as a deep sea treasure hunter, desperate for one big score to make your name, and your fortune. Your crew believes it has discovered the shipwreck of the notorious pirate Calico Blue, and his lost treasure. We couldn’t find any reference to a real life Calico Blue, but there was a Calico Jack. Calico Jack was an English pirate captain named Jack Rackham who sailed in the Bahamas in the early 1700s. His nickname was apparently derived from the clothing he wore. Calico

Why is the identity of developers behind early video games sometimes a mystery?

Matt Reichert is the expert on Atari prototypes, and he maintains atariprotos.com, a website dedicated to documenting these unfinished and unreleased games. His thorough research and detailed game reviews are important to the Atari community, and impressive. Gamers today are accustomed to long elaborate credit sequences, but what they may not know is that sharing the names of the individuals who created games was not the norm.  Until the mid 1980s, most games were only credited to the c

The search for the developer of Aquavanture

Matt Reichert is the expert on Atari prototypes, and he maintains atariprotos.com, a website dedicated to documenting these unfinished and unreleased games. His thorough research and detailed game reviews are important to the Atari community, and impressive. The origins of the original Aquaventure prototype are a bit hazy.  It is thought to have been discovered by a collector at a flea market in central Florida in the mid 1990s.  Eventually, this collector brought the prototype to a gami

The strange case of the 2600 that wouldn't power on properly

This one was quite tricky and I'm still not 100% convinced this was the full cause. However, grab a snack and a drink cause here we go... An older 2600 heavy sixer was sent for just a refurbishment and no upgrades. Basically just replacing out the components that come in a standard console5 refurb kit. But I immediately knew someone was off about this console before I even opened it up due the bulging I could see in the front facia switch section near the left side of the cartridge port?

Road Trip - Multnomah Falls

Q:  What is the most popular tourist attraction in the entire state of Oregon? A:  Amongst many natural wonders in the state, Multnomah Falls is the winner My wife and I left our home early this morning to beat the crowds and visit the falls.  It's about 50 miles east of Portland...about an hour away down the scenic Columbia River Gorge.  The Gorge was created in one of the last ice ages 10,000 years ago by the tremendous water flows of the Missoula floods.  The falls are 620 feet tall wi

Inside the Cartridge: The New Atari 2600 PCB

When Atari was creating games in the 70’s and 80’s, every title was programmed to work with a specific configuration of processors and memory that were called “Mappers”, and over the years, these configurations changed as developers pushed the Atari 2600 hardware to the absolute limit of its capabilities. When we started the Atari XP project, we recognized that re-releasing a wide variety of titles would require making PCB with many different configurations. From a manufacturing perspective, t

- ITC - Just how much work is sometimes required when working on previously upgraded consoles...

Here at the Ivory Tower, I get quite a few requests for console services. It might be an actual repair to get a console working back to full factory function or refurbishment of a working condole to ensure it works for another 40+ years into the future. But by and large most of my requests are to enhance a console in some way. Usually through audio/video upgrades etc. But on more rare occasions, I will be sent a system that has already had work done to it either by the original owner or from ano

Howard Scott Warshaw Discusses Saboteur

The team at Atari recently asked legendary game designer Howard Scott Warshaw some questions about Saboteur, and the connections between Saboteur and Yar’s Revenge. Q: What’s up with the Yar in Saboteur? HSW: That’s a good question. Perhaps a better question is: What’s the Yar up to in Saboteur? You will note the Yar contributes to the building of the rocket transport, but it is not clear what exactly that Yar is contributing. Remember this: You can take the Yar out of Saboteur

A Vectrex Collection

My Vectrex collection!  I just got the Vectrex back from being refurbished (buzz-off kit installed, all caps replaced, general clean-up) and thought it would be a good time to document the whole collection.  The Vectrex is one of my all-time favorite parts of my collection.  I purchased this one in Feb 2013 from a chap over on AtariAge.  Over the years, I've added a few carts and overlays, and that sweet converted Genesis arcade stick (that turns-out was made by a guy I know!).  I'm now up

JETBOARD JOUST (VCS) Published 2021 (Freedom Games) Developer: BitBull Retail: $9.99 Ever since Eugene Jarvis and Williams Electronics unleashed Defender on unsuspecting arcades in 1980, there have been countless sequels, send-ups, hacks and tributes to the game.  With a rare exception, these tend to fall short of the high-water mark set by the original. Jetboard Joust by indie developer BitBull is one such exception.  The game takes the foundational elements of Jarvis’ class

Retroist Atari Lynx Podcast

The Atari Lynx is a great "what if" in the history of hand-held consoles. Far from perfect, it was an interesting alternative to the Donkey Kong-sized gorilla that was the Game Boy. On this episode of the Retroist Podcast, I take a look back at the rise, fall, and legacy of the Atari Lynx.Listen to this episode at the Retroist Podcast

Sly Spy

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at being a spy? Well the arcade game Sly Spy from Data East is for you. The arcade game came out in 1989 and the plot resembles movies and books from the James Bond series as well as some other spy media out at the time. In fact the game mentions the Golden Gun as pictured below. There are eight playable stages and a 9th stage which is the final boss level. There are different levels in the game you have an underwater level, a skydiving level, a beat em up s
