  1. My first Atari experience was in 83 I believe... my dad came home with a Vader model 2600 with Pac Man as the pack in cart. I don't remember playing it though, my first memories of playing the Atari were Q*Bert and Super Breakout. Through the 80's and early 90's I played a ton of Atari. I had people at church giving me stacks of games when they found out I had a 2600 and still played it; they had moved on to the NES by then. We had a video game rental store next door to our house, and one of the guys there gave me a huge collection of games (about 50 or so) and a bunch of accessories, including Indy 500 with driving controllers, a Wico Command Control joystick, the kids touchpad, and Star Raiders CIB! I finally (after much begging) convinced my parents to get me an NES in 1990, but I still played the Atari off and on through the 90's. Sadly my collection got lost after I moved out of my parents house; I managed to keep my NES and games, but I don't know what ever happened to the Atari stuff. Fast forward to 2012, took my daughter to see Wreck it Ralph, and I realized she had no clue who most of these video game characters were. I decided to start retro gaming, and of course the first place I wanted to start was Atari. I got a Flashback 4 for 15 dollars off of eBay, but with no Activision titles I decided I needed a real console. I got a 7800 bundle with 50 games off eBay for about 60 bucks shipped, and now I've got over 200 2600 games, and 20 7800 games. I've also got a 5200 (thanks again RickR!) with 21 games, and I've enjoyed learning the quirks and charm of the 5200.
  2. Thanks Rick, I'll give MESS a go and see if I can get it working in there. It was for the CoCo. I had a chance to buy a CoCo at a retro shop for 30 bucks; kicking myself for not picking it up, but the wife has drawn a line in my collecting that stops at classic computers No Commodore or Atari 800 for me, but she would be OK with an Apple II because she had one growing up! I just realized this thread probably belongs in emulation and not classic computing, so if a mod wants to move it feel free
  3. I've been trying to get a TRS-80 emulator working for a couple of days now, and I just keep striking out. Does anyone have any suggestions? The main reason I want to get one running is to try Dungeons of Daggorath. It's the one game mentioned in Ready Player One I haven't made a serious effort at playing. Looks like I can play it on archive.org, but I'm worried about losing my progress.
  4. I highly recommend playing the game on a real NES though; it seems to have the tightest control.
  5. Holy crap, thought yours was 479,000! The month is still young though, and I have a feeling you'll top my score!
  6. So close, yet so far away! 465550 If I hadn't missed a bonus round I would be in the lead!
  7. 370,200! On my CRT with my original NES! Comin for you NSG!!!
  8. Uggh... got a little higher but nowhere near 400K. Damn lightning clouds!
  9. I thought you might be points pressing, which is totally doable, but it gets tricky because of the lightning if you linger too long on the level.
  10. I think I'm on to your strategy... but I haven't mastered it yet. Going to keep trying.
  11. I saw this video a few days ago as well... looks fun!

    Shadowgate

Anyone else like the ICOM games on the NES? My favorite is Shadowgate! I haven't beat it yet, mostly because I refused to use a walkthrough, but my wife decided that we needed a little bit of assistance last night after we kept getting stuck in the same rooms. She read the walkthrough to herself, and I would just ask her for a hint if I needed it. We were finally able to get the missing pieces for the main group of rooms we were stuck in last night, and now we've gotten to a later part of the game and put the walkthrough away. Pretty excited to hopefully finish this one soon, even if we did need a bit of help to do it. Found out that using the Look command in this game is critical; look at everything! We missed several things on our first few attempts at this game because we weren't looking at everything.
  13. Spoke too soon, got another HS this morning (still haven't gotten close to NSG yet): Played on my Retron 5 with standard NES controller
  14. Did a bit better this morning: Played on my Retron 5 with standard NES controller
  15. Well, NSG has given me a ceiling to hit at least... after having quite a few sub 100000 games I finally had a good game! Played on my Retron 5 with standard NES controller
  16. Rick, you should have snagged these while you were at it: https://www.kitguru.net/gaming/matthew-wilson/john-romero-just-auctioned-off-his-doom-2-floppy-discs-for-3000/
  17. For people who really want to get serious about stropping: https://www.shaveface.com I read some reviews though, and using a dry towel is almost just as good. You could probably take a piece of old jeans and do the same thing as well. I used to use the Braun electric with the cleaning station and everything, and it wasn't bad, but again its that pain point of when you need new blades, you're shelling out a large chunk of dough. I also had trouble finding the cleaning solution cartridges sometimes, and those were also fairly expensive. It seemed like the blades just weren't holding up as well as a straight razor, and I also didn't get as good of a shave as I would with a manual razor.
  18. Big Harry's fan here! I've been using their subscription service for about a year now, and I've only done three shipments of 8 blades? I agree with others that they don't give quite as good a shave as a Gillette, but for me its close enough, especially with the difference in price. I also started stropping the blades after use, something I wasn't doing before, and like Rick says, that really helps the life of the blade. I can usually get 2 weeks, maybe 2 and a half out of a Harry's blade. I'll have to check my local Costco to see if they started carrying the Mach 3 again, as I remember really liking that razor, and 27 dollars for 17 blades is pretty good; cheaper than Harry's actually which comes in at about 2 dollars a blade. I was buying Fusion blades at Costco before I switched, and they kept only carrying the Fusion Power blades, and it seemed like it was 50 dollars for 12-14 blades the last time I bought some? Pushing 3.50 or more for a blade was ridiculous to me. Edit: I also tried DSC, and HATED their blades. Ingrown hairs, cuts, not a pleasant experience...
  19. The supply issues with the NES Classic have seriously dampened my enthusiasm toward this system. Its going to be haves vs have nots all over again, with scalpers laughing all the way to the bank.
  20. I... was not alive yet. About 4 months before I was around... I heard lots of stories though, plus remember discussing in science classes a lot.
  21. Sega CD FMV games, the games where you felt like you rented a movie instead of a video game...
