True.  It's my understanding that Champ employs ARM assisted boards for the majority of their games.  So a fair bit that's going on is in the cart and not the 2600 itself.  This is one reason they are currently incompatible with the 2600/7800+.  I wonder how close even the most talented folks could have gotten to a Robotwar or Galagon circa 1983 - two years before ARM was introduced.

1982 was a crucial year. Yes, too early for ARM. It would've been nice for Atari to find innovative ways of keeping the 2600 competitive with something like ColecoVision before moving on to the next big thing - or more aptly - having chosen to replace the 2600 prior to the release of Space Invaders.

Unfortunately rewriting history isn't the easiest thing. Champ Games are awesome, I really enjoy what they've been doing and wish them the best!

I am glad they are using modern technology to enhance the graphics and sound of their games. It's actually impressive. It would be nice to understand how to make homebrews like that. It's really amazing stuff. I understand "Zeviouz" is reverse-engineered A7800 "Xevious" code that was tweaked to run on the A2600 cartridge version. Fascinating.
