I was stoked to receive these bad boys today at the post office! Immediately after work I plugged them in for a few rounds of Crazy Brix (7800) and Eggmania (2600). They are just as smooth and comfortable as @btbfilms76 suggested. Well done @Video 61!

Also, @Justin included a sealed copy of Task Force (2600). This is the first physical copy of a Froggo game in my collection and was such a great surprise!

Thanks again to Justin, BTB and Video61 for making the giveaway possible!

Somewhere around the six minute mark in @Funkmaster V 's video he has a cart you produced. Is is somewhat based upon this diagnostic cart ? .... further in the video there was something else you produced but I forget where exactly.

    hi,

thats the very first homebrew ever. it was done by my friend harry dodgson, he turned it over to me, maybe on the third one he sold, or perhaps number seven or eleven. it was decades ago.

i have been paying him a royalty on everyone sold, i think i sold about 130 of them. someday i might go back into production. its actually a programming tool, and the switch is for either 7800 and 2600 demos and games, or actually a programming monitor. you used the keyboard/keypad/star raiders/sesame controllers for inputs.

    thanks,

Wow, nice collection! ... I saw the title of the thread & thought it was for the Intellivision not noticing it was in the Atari 7800 boards.

It took me a few sittings to watch all the video. Member @Video 61 I think is still pretty active here and most certainly could give you insight on that monitor cart. I've never seen it before & seems pretty cool.

I do have a 2600 diagnostic cart in my stash I hadn't geeked-out on in awhile.

Here you go.  It has another input up front with a headphone jack, too.  The rear has a really weird connector I've never seen before.

On a side note, this TV is a mixed breed.  It says Toshiba but only one processor in the TV is Toshiba branded.  The tube was made by Orion (remember them?), the DVD player by Sanyo who in 2002 was a respected brand that did make quality products.  That's who made my other CRT that I absolutely love to use.  The yoke attached to the tube has JVC on it.  Other processors in the TV are also branded Orion or JVC.  Everything works in this unit but that top of the screen.  The image is not altered by those lines but it does seem to be struggling with something.

    hi 5200 guy,

WOW! that is really a mixture of companies. not a bad input selection. i wonder if it was made to have another t.v. slaved into it?

There were two small pots where one was for vertical position.  The other was on the power circuit and just said B+.  The flyback transformer had the usual two for focus and screen adjustments.  Nothing made any difference.  However, I did clean it up and even with the screen being like is I can live with it.

    hi 5200 guy,

awesome find, hope you can figure it out. does it have a full set in inputs?

  9. WANTED: Atari XE Game System

i am looking for at least one XEGS, maybe more. it must be physically intact, that means no physical modifications, or damage, keyboard has to be in tack, as well as the connecting cable. if you do not have a keyboard, i will still consider it, although at a lesser value. if you only have a keyboard, i may consider that also, but at a lesser value.

if you have bug hunt and the flight simulator II cart, they will be considered at a higher value.

for a fully intact one i am offering a choice of a total of six titles below, one each, all are new in the box. in average shape. that means not mint, but not smashed either.

I think the 8-bit had a version of SI made by Roklan on tape that was a lot closer to the arcade.

2600 Asteroids is awesome, that's for sure.  But the 8-bit version offered 4 player simultaneous mode, didn't it?   Atari could have done better on the 8-bit, I agree.

    hi rickr,

forgot about the roklan version, its great! i never played multiple players on space invaders. it might offer it though. many early 8-bit titles were a disappointment, agreed.

I think we all know that the Atari 5200 is based on the same hardware as the Atari 8-bit computers.  And in many cases, Atari just ported existing games from the 8-bit to the 5200 with only minor changes.

But I can think of three games that Atari actually re-wrote -- started from scratch -- for the 5200.  I thought it might be fun to do some comparisons of these games.  The idea came to me while I was playing 5200 Space Invaders last night, so I'll start with that game.

    8-bit Version

    post-41-0-67690800-1444597759_thumb.jpg

The 8-bit version of Space Invaders is just ok.  It plays well, with good speed and controls, but it just doesn't feel like Space Invaders.  The aliens don't look like the arcade version at all, there are no shields, and the aliens emerge from a lame looking space-ship/rocket on the left side of the screen.  For each wave cleared, the rocket lowers a notch and new aliens emerge.  The ground under your ship isn't quite flat, although that has no impact on your movement.

    post-41-0-11495500-1444597760_thumb.jpg

    5200 Version

    post-41-0-56337200-1444597760_thumb.jpg

The 5200 version is very good.  Good controls and speed.  The shields are here and the aliens look better, making it feel more like the arcade version.  Strangely, like in the 8-bit version, the aliens emerge from the left side of the screen, although there is no rocket.  Best feature:  the aliens change every 2nd wave!  And there are some pretty wild designs.  Spinning/rotating/shrinking aliens!  I counted 4 different sets, but there may be more than that.

Judging by your ship, the ground color, the information at the bottom of the screen, and the left-emerging aliens, it is obvious the programmer heavily referenced the 8-bit version in creating this version.

    post-41-0-00372200-1444597761_thumb.jpg

    Why they did it.

I think the 8-bit version is pretty lackluster and gets boring pretty quickly.  Atari spent some time and came up with a version that is much more fun and will hold your interest a little longer.  I know I kept playing to see all the different types of aliens!  Very nicely done and a great choice by Atari.

Coming soon, the other two games that I know of....

    hi rickr,

if i remember right, and its been a very long time ago, the 8-bit version of space invaders was better on the cassette version. its been a very long time ago since i played it on cassette, i might be mistaken, but i remember there was something different about it.

i do not play space invaders at all on any system but the 2600. atari also slaughtered asteroids on the 8-bit vs. the 2600 version. which still rules today.

Looks good! Totally make a 5200 port, as I feel it would be much appreciated.

I have a question for you: can you press down to speed up the ice cream like in Klax? I didn't watch the whole video, so this might have been in there.

Really nice game though! I wish I could make games for old systems!

    hi hdn,

yes it has that option. thanks for the feedback. the atari systems need to be supported.

Looks good. Will you be able to make horizontal and diagonal matches and matches of more than 3? (I was only able to watch a little of the vid without sound, so forgive me if the video answers this.) I’d like to see it on the 5200 as well.

    hi cjherr,

yes we will have those options in the game also, and thanks for your feedback.

Jack Tramiel was a ruthless business person, no doubt about it.  As someone mentioned, he would absolutely go after any developers and suppliers who were on precarious financial ground,  and if they weren't already, they soon would be because he leveraged them to the point they had no choice but to either bow to his whims or go under.  With Commodore, he had 'vertical integration'; he owned and fully controlled the chain of suppliers (such as chipmaker MOS), but without that, he strong-armed companies to get get the same advantage.  Epyx learned that the hard way, which ultimately contributed to the Lynx's demise (lack of software).  The same scenario played out with the Jaguar, and all the 3rd-party developers that signed up to support it.  I have a stack of company memos that detailed how that played out.

Video games, and software in general, was low on his list of priorities.  He always felt the hardware would drive the sales of software, which is the exact opposite of how the market worked.  How else do you explain how inferior systems like the VCS and GameBoy overwhelmingly outsold superior hardware offered by the competition?  He "bought"  a video game company because it allowed him the quickest path back into the market to compete with Commodore.  The Atari name had some value as far as recognition, but for the first 2 years under Tramiel, his only focus was on selling computers.  The 2600JR (and later the XEGS) were released in order to help sell off the warehouses full of software he had.  The NES revitalized the home video game market in the US to the point it was worth it for him to release the 7800

I suspect he tried the same tactics with GCC over the 7800, which is why it wasn't released nationwide until nearly 2 years after the initial limited release in California in 1984.  Revisionists like Goldberg and Vendel would have you believe its release took 2 years because of all the paperwork and contract wrangling involved.  Ask yourself - how was it Tramiel was able to buy a company like Atari within days, but couldn't secure a deal with GCC regarding the 7800 sooner?

    hi Scott,

all true, and its why i too observed relying on hardware to generate massive profits worked in the 1970s when there was little competition, but by 1980 that scenerio evaporated. jack never figured it out.

he was obessed with cutting costs on hardware to generate profits to the point where there was no profit period anymore. when you sell 7800 joysticks with copper domes on the fire buttons, when you sell cartridges where the shell can crumble, when you sell cartridges that no longer work in your machines because you cheapened the electronics up to the point where either the circuit boards are so thin on the carts, that they make contact with the port pins difficult, or the motherboards so thin they crack when a cart is installed or pulled out of the machine, and if you hold the shell to help pull out the cart and the shells shatters, or the games no longer work because of cheapened electronics, you should take notice that profit from hardware is a fools game.

space invaders showed the computer world that its the games stupid!

i was told that there were plenty of games being developed for the jaguar, but most developers did not trust jack, so the games were tossed.

jack wanted 100% profit from games, but lusted after a few percent from hardware. if the games were not all big sellers, he was enraged. if he sold millions of a unit and made little or no money, he was happy.

i have a fax from atari right before they dumped the 8-bit lines showing what was left in stock for games. can't read it today, too degraded, but it showed even the XEGS tiny library, most games either sold out, or almost sold out, they were a success.

the overstock that was left came out of the warner days when atari was king. otherwise jack's releases almost all of the them sold way over 50% of the stock except a few. many flat sold out totally.

you would think that that would light a bulb, it did not.
