Here are some work in progress screen shots for Venture on the Atari 7800 I have the first 3 map screens put together. I am planning to make this more like the arcade verses the 2600, Coleco, Intellivision, or even my 8-bit/5200 version. It may have several modes, default being arcade, other modes being home console, 8-bit challenger mode, and 7800 challenger mode. The issue I had with the 8-bit version was I could only dedicate 6 sprites for the enemies inside of each room. 7800 that can be extended to 8 or 10 maybe, or have something else like flames or energy bolts bouncing between walls. Many ideals are being considered.

I have been hearing rumors that Sega dropped their affiliation with AtGames and may give us a proper Genesis/Mega Drive mini.

MalakZero reacted to nosweargamer in Identifying Atari 7800 Difficulty Switches
A lot of newcomers to the 7800 have a problem identifying the difficulty switches on the 7800, since they are unlabeled, small and a little hidden.
They are located next to the joystick ports. When pushed to the left, they are in the B position, and when pushed to the right, they are in the A position.
B<->A   But wait? B comes before A?  Doesn't that seem backwards? Why did Atari do that? Because the B stands for Beginner and A for Advanced. Some games switch this, but for most games you want to start with them in the B position. Just remember B(eginner) <-> A(dvanced)
FYI-Some games also use them for different functions while other games don't use them at all.
(A quick thanks goes to RIckR. I used a picture he shared in the Canyon Bomber High Score Squad thread, and added the letters as a visual aid)

    BIG CHANGES COMING
    TO ATARI I/O FORUMS!

Here's a SNEAK PEEK at What's Coming. Click Above Video To Watch!

We're upgrading to a new version of the software that powers the forums. Atari I/O Forums will run on the latest incarnation of the industry-leading community forum software, powering thousands of message boards online. This is a complete redesign from the ground up, and will include new features not yet found in Atari forums online.

This is a very big deal, this will affect everybody in the forums.

    WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU:

This is a GOOD thing. We're upgrading to the next level. More features, more opportunities to make the forums better. Best of all, we're bringing back Wednesday Night Atari Chat! That's right, the chat room will be back, new and improved. Things are going to look very different. Things will look and feel different in the forums. The forums will be "under construction" for a while, while we dial things in.

Wednesday Night Atari Chat returns to the forums! Within a few weeks of our new chat room opening Wednesday Night Atari Chat will be back, hosted by Justin, btbfilms76, and The Professor. You might see DeLorean, Doctor Octagon, and Museum Matt pop in too! Expect NEW games, contests, events and trivia nights to be back later this summer or fall.

We care very much about your experience in the Atari I/O Forums, and we’re looking at all options to make the new chat room bigger and better than ever before. You choose to spend time here and we want it to feel like home. A big part of what has made this community so special was the chat room and the events held there. We want to get it right.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR CURRENT LOGIN AND PASSWORD. Write it down somewhere and keep it safe. Captcha is offline until the upgrade. If you forgot your password and need to reset it, send me a PM and we will reset it for you. Also make sure to back up any important files, contacts or information you have stored in PMs, galleries or posted in the forums.  NOW is the time to take care of this. Don’t wait!

We may experience some interruptions during the upgrade. The forums may be inaccessible for short periods of time, member pips (rankings) may disappear briefly, and things could feel unfamiliar. Captcha is offline. Expect the unexpected.

    PHASE I: FORUMS UPGRADE
    (Over the coming weeks)
Our forums upgrade will take place over the coming weeks. The big switchover will happen mostly at once, with fine tuning and new features coming online as we dial things in.

    PHASE II: NEW CHAT ROOM
    (In time for summer)
A new chat room will open in the forums following completion of the upgrade. Within a few weeks of the new chat room opening, Wednesday Night Atari Chat will begin with weekly hosted events by Justin, btbfilms76, and The Professor. We’re lining up new trivia events, contests and prizes to follow shortly thereafter.

    PHASE III: CUSTOM DESIGN
(TBA - After phase I & II are completed)
Further customization (Time & $$$) of the forums may take place at some point following the completion of our forums upgrade and launch of the new chat room. This will depend on user feedback and our experience with the new forums going forward.

I showed these off back in my pickups vid from a few months ago, but here are some photos to add to the mix.

Quest Industries Inc.'s Questar II -- a high quality 8-way leaf-switch joystick with arcade styling, a metallic base, and dual buttons for ambidextrous use.

TG Products' EnjoyStick -- fits in the palm of your hand, has a self-centering stick similar to a Vectrex joystick, and the top black piece is reversible, allowing placement of the button on either side.

I still need to take some good photos of the Fire Command II...

Technically, just like most Sega Genesis controllers, this works with 2600, albeit only the B button. But, you can assign it different turbo speeds, switch the joystick mode between 4 way & 8 way, and I believe the joystick itself uses micro-switches, making this a pretty cool 2600 option.

MalakZero reacted to Mr SQL in New Atari 2600 video mode discovery parallels modern research
Is cutting edge modern research possible on the Atari 2600?   Yes, the TIA chip has such open ended arcitecture there is still room for experimentation and discovery; my research on Atari 2600 Motion Blur Reduction technology parallels modern research with advanced display technologies!   Unintentional discoveries:   This technology was discovered while the researcher was working on advanced 3D displays. Similarly, I was working on an advanced blitter chip for the Atari 2600 that would be capable of high FPS output when I encountered the effects.   The researcher and I are having an interesting discussion on the technology here, and the Atari community has been invited to participate:   https://forums.blurbusters.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4135   There are both Atari examples (3 fun games!) and tons of examples from the researcher to try out and experience the effects with really clear explanations of the technology. The potential to enhance modern 60 FPS animation for gaming on 120 Hz monitors and produce perfectly clear 60 FPS animation on 480 Hz monitors is amazing.   Hope everyone enjoys!

MalakZero reacted to peteym5 in Delta Space Arena Deluxe Edition
I would like to make an official announcement for the re-release for Delta Space Arena Deluxe edition for the Atari 8-bit. It is essentially an enhanced version of Omega Race (aka DeltaRace). I did want to showcase the ability of the Atari 8-bit computer over that of versions of Omega Race on Commodore 64, Vic-20, Atari 2600, and the Arcade version. The game is more colorful, each level has a different design for the Arena. Some additional enemies. It works on any standard unmodified Atari 8-bit. I cannot guarantee it will work with certain hardware mods. The cartridge is now available from Atari Sales (video 61) for $39.95. The game will also be available for the Atari 5200.
The Deluxe edition was made after receiving some requests for games that can make use of the Indy 500 controller. I decided to make that an option, along with the ability to use paddles, trackball. The default controller at start up is still joystick. You will need to press OPTION when the start splash screen is up to change the controller.  There were never any glitches or bugs reported with the original version of the game so this version plays essentially the same with the exception of using a different controller. Some sound effects were changed, a background drum beat can be heard every few seconds, and a short tune is played an the end of each level. The "Fuzzies" or "Static" on the right side of the screen had been reduced to one pixel for those who play Atari games on modern displays. This is done by activating the HSCROLL bit in the display list and setting the HSCROL to 1. The cartridge will have a new label similar to Atari Silver label with the rainbow color strip.
I would like to keep this in the 8-bit section to answer questions and provide wide spread support. Since this game can receive input from four different controllers, I anticipate questions. One thing I did similar to the Commodore version of Omega race was when using a paddle, you need to hold down the fire button for a second for thrust, this also applies to the driving controller.

    Junk!  Juuunk!  Juuuuunk!

    What'd I take?
Space Dungeon, for the 5200.  A very nice upgrade to what I had, which was looking a little worn. Riddle of the Sphinx, for the 2600.  A *big* upgrade to the copy in my collection, which was far more faded than I'd realized. Compute!'s First Book of Atari, from 1981 -- gonna have to try typing up some of the included programs on my 1200XL sometime! Alphabet Zoo (Spinnaker) for the Atari 8-bit line -- I'm not going to start collecting 8-bit carts, I'm not going to start collecting 8-bit carts, I'm not going to... A CX-40 Atari joystick, in excellent condition.  A new cassette tape!  I honestly took this for the case -- I needed one for a loose Starpath cassette I have.  But now I can record you a mixtape, too. Time Lord (NES) -- well, I wasn't gonna take this initially, but it was the one thing that wouldn't make it back in the box.  Hmm, maybe I'll start the next RJB... Koopa shell McDonalds friction motor toy.  Came in the original plastic; I opened it so the cats could chase after it.  The Big Book of Hell -- as a huge early Simpsons fan (man, isn't it a shame that it ended after 9 seasons? ) I've never read any of Groening's earlier comic work.  That changes now. Activision TV Games plug-and-play from Toymax -- one of the first "modern" P&P devices (2001?). I'm curious to see how the 10 games compare to the originals! Onto the next!

The stuff in the box should be retro or retro related (so something like a new Mario amiibo would fine, since it is related to something retro).
The majority of the contents of the box should be gaming related, but  there can be some other retro stuff in there too, like movies, toys and trading cards.
