MaximumRD reacted to The Professor in MaximumRD's YouTube Videos
Great videos MaximumRD! Justin introduced me to your videos a while back and got me hooked. Honestly I wish you were able to make videos more often, whenever you post them here I save them for when I have time to enjoy them all the way through.. I make a meal of them! There's a lot of showboating on YouTube and people trying too hard to be something they aren't. Some are overwhelmingly critical or vulgar because they think they have to be. By contrast your vids are well done and you come across as a really genuine guy who loves gaming.

Alternative Game Controls # 1- Sensor & Touch. Looking at some aftermarket alternative controller options for popular Gaming Consoles. I will be showing a couple Turbo Touch 360 gamepads by TRIAX for the Sega Genesis / Megadrive as well as the Suncom Sensor for ColecoVision and lastly throwing in as a bonus (it is not really in the same category being more like a Intellivision DISC) I will look at the Quickshot NES QS-126 for the Nintendo NES. MaximumRD reacted to Justin in AtariTel Telephones And The Legendary Steve Bristow
Steve Bristow sadly passed away last week. It seems as though we've been losing genuine geniuses and pioneers of the video age far too often recently. My latest article at The Retroist commemorates Steve and in particular his accomplishments at AtariTel - Atari's advanced telephone division. I hope you'll check it out, and remember Steve as fondly as all of us do.

MaximumRD reacted to RadioPoultry in Pigs in Space analysis
Groundhog Day is here, and I can't think of a more appropriate way to observe that revered occasion than to take a look at one of the many games involving hogs on the Atari 2600: "Pigs in Space". By remarkable coincidence, I just happened to win a copy in the trivia contest two weeks ago. Since I do not have a way of capturing quality images from my television, I'll be taking them via emulation.
"Pigs in Space" is based on the sci-fi parody sketch that was featured frequently on the Muppet Show. To summarize, three pigs voyage through the stars aboard the spaceship Swinetrek, boldly doing nothing of particular importance. The game itself is somewhat unusual in that it's effectively three very different games in one, and each game had a different programmer. After switching on the console, the player is greeted with this screen: To quote the announcer on the show.... "PIGS... IN... SPAAaace!". I would have been delighted if the Atari generated tones mimicking that introduction, but I guess it was not to be. A copyright of 1983 is given, two years after the show had aired its final episode. Like a number of later Atari games, you don't have to lean over and pull the reset switch to start, you can can just press the joystick button. Being lazy, I appreciate this. Setting the left difficulty switch to 'B' gives the player an extra life every 10,000 points, but I personally find this makes the game too easy, so I leave the switch on 'A'.
On the next screen we are reminded once again that this is PIGS IN SPACE, and are presented with a set of three disembodied pig heads in profile from which to choose. Each represents a different member of the crew and a different mini-game. They may be played in any order, even the same game multiple times in a row, but each becomes more difficult the more it is played (until a maximum difficulty is achieved, that is).
Selecting the left pig (Captain Link Hogthrob) starts our first game, "Chickenvaders". This game is the most derivative of the three, but nevertheless probably the most fun. It would be easy to say it's Space Invaders with chickens (a variation I can appreciate), but there are a few subtle differences. According to the manual, which I found on AtariAge, the chickens are dropping eggs at Link, and Link is throwing link sausages at them. (Oh, "Link" Hogthrob, I get the joke now! Only took me, what, 25 years? Also, I'd rather not know why a pig is carrying sausages around.) All the projectiles look like lines. When struck by an egg, Link is transmogrified into a chicken and flaps away off the screen. When one of the chickens is hit, it is sent to the "bird dimension", a less disturbing fate to be sure. Leading the chicken armada is Gonzo (or at least his head) on a flying saucer. (Gonzo, in fact, had appeared as an antagonist in Pigs in Space a couple times. Known as "Dearth Nadir", he once commanded chicken storm troopers.) Pelting him with pork products provides points aplenty. Sorry. Unlike Space Invaders, there are no shields to take cover from enemy fire, the enemy only fires one shot at you at a time, and only the horizontally nearest enemy fires at you. One detail I like is that, true to the show (with a few exceptions), you don't see the captain's legs. As the hostile hens come closer, he becomes more and more submerged, giving the player a little more room to work with, though eventually you'll lose a life if their approach is not stopped.
Destroying... I mean, banishing all the chickens completes the level and sends you back to the menu. Each time this game is chosen, the chickens move faster (though Gonzo always seems to plod along at the same speed). Chickenvaders has some of the best character graphics and animation I've seen on the 2600. Gonzo's spinning head (3 colors!) and the transformation into a chicken are particularly well done. It's reasonably fun to play, though Space Invaders is certainly better in that regard, with faster enemies that fire more unpredictably, and the presence of shields to complicate things. But wait, there's more! Next up: The health concerns of Italian food. -

I haven't picked this one up yet. The videos online always impressed me.
If you haven't checked them out, the B&C Computervisions (myatari on eBay) protos of Barkley Shut Up & Jam and Brett Hull NHL Hockey seem pretty complete. Space War 2000 is rough but playable. It shows a lot of potential.

I have two TG-16's, both do composite A/V without the official add-on as they have been modded. No original HuCards (I gave those away ) which is fine since I have a TurboEverdrive so I can load any PCengine / TG16 game up and play on the TG16! Some great games for sure!

MaximumRD got a reaction from Justin in MaximumRD's YouTube Videos
I have been asked quite a bit about my own thoughts and impressions since doing my Colecovision and Intellivision Flashback unboxing video. Damn crazy views I got on that one compared to my usual numbers. Anyway, I just have not had the time or opportunity to plug my own back in BUT I can tell you from the info I have seen from others videos and comments etc, I will offer this: Colecovision FLASHBACK: Sadly, the controllers are not interchangeable with the original ones, they were originally suppose to be but a last minute decision (likely to meet a quicker release ) changed that. The emulation is even worse than on the Intellivision Flashback. One real example is THE HEIST by Microfun on the Colecovision flashback pretty much running at 1/2 the original speed UGH! Not only does that kill the once fun and bouncy music but it kills the pace of the game, that is the worse of it though, the rest play OK. If your expectations are not too high (IE: you are not expecting a perfect representation of the original games) for the casual retro gamer just looking to quickly and conveniently relive some Colecovision fun it is not too bad a deal. Note also a dude on Atariage offering a sticker set helping this unit look much closer to the original design of the Colecovision which is nice as AtGames seemed to put less effort in this area than they did for the Intellivision Flashback. That said my original Colecovison, accessories and 128in1 cartridge isn't going anywhere.
Intellivision Flashback : Same issue with the controllers not being interchangeable with the originals (though a dude on Atariage offers adapters to fix this issue allowing you to use the Flashback controllers on original Intellivisions) Games play a little better than compared to the Coleco FB however a true fan will still notice some quirks especially in the audio department compared to the original but nothing too drastic. Again, for the causal player just looking to plug n play for some Intellivision fun not too bad a deal. I DO hope to get some time to myself to actually hookup and play to demonstrate for you all personally some of what i have reported here. Don't wait for me if you are on the fence for either of these though as you can find plenty of videos demonstrating all the new Flashbacks that are very thorough. Bottom line, these are not for the "purist", you guys can just stick to the original but the price point and all the included games means it is really marketed to those that had one as a kid and passes by seeing it on the shelf and they think "HEY! I remember having a Colecovision / Intellivision, this looks cool!" it is NOT for those who have the original hardware / games unless you are the type of collector who just has to have everything regardless or just want as a conversation piece etc. Had the games played more accurately or the controllers been compatible with originals right out of the box it would have been a no brainer, as it stands though you can decide if it is worth it for yourselves.
