  1. Two of Nintendo’s most-hated systems finally meet. Wii U and Virtual Boy unite!

This game, Mario Clash, is great. It’s like a sequel to arcade Mario Brothera. The jump and throw buttons are reversed from what you’d expect, but you get used to it pretty fast. I still swapped the buttons on my controller, however, and turned the harsh red colors to a nice white. The graphics really pop on my CRT. Shame the VB wasn’t handled and designed a little better.

Wiimednafen here actually has several 3D glasses options, including Red/Cyan. You should try loading this up on your broken Wii, Rick. It is crazy good at everything it does. It emulates VB, Game Boy, GBC, GBA, NES, TG16, Lynx, and more, all flawlessly as far as I know. A must-install for any Wii or Wii U.

You got a Virtual Boy, @RickR? You da cool cat 👍😎 I've really enjoyed the 3D in 3DS games.

Yes.  I got one 15 years ago or so.  It's one of my favorite systems.  The 3D effect is really well done, and the graphics are a lot better than I expected.  They also nailed the controller, which is very similar to the Gamecube controller.

They should have called it "3D Boy" instead of "Virtual Boy".

  2. Another Switch player! I’m surprised you haven’t disabled the on-screen instructions yet. Those things drove me mad, and I turned them off immediately after getting Switch Online. Speaking of which, I might “Switch” to real hardware soon.
  3. I have yet to listen to Pie Factory. I enjoy listening to @dauber on the 7800 Homebrew Podcast, so why I haven’t tried this one out is a mystery. I will give this a listen soon while waiting for the next episode of 2600 GBG, and maybe even send in feedback for next time. What are the next games, and where do I send in feedback?
  4. Only true masters use the Fire Stingray! You are all figuring this out quickly.
  5. Funny that you mention the TG-16. I am not very well acquainted with the machine at all. Yesterday, while working on hacking Zerobeat’s Wii, I decided to load up a multi-system emulator on my own Wii U as well. Now I can play TG-16 games for the first time, as well as Lynx, Virtual Boy, and more. Anyone have any good games recommendations? I picked up a few ROMs from past squad challenges here, about four or five total. And that console looks very cool, @socrates63. It’s ridiculously tiny!
  6. I’ve always alternated between what I called it. Mostly, I’ll just say “sness”, “Super Nintendo”, or “Esseniess”. Same here. The Fire Stingray is the best car by far. Keep up the good work!
  7. Fun fact: Since my birthday in 2011 when I got my Wii, I have gotten only two more physical Wii discs. One was Deadrising, which was for my dad to play at the time, and I still haven't played it because it doesn't look fun. The other was Puzzle Challenge, which I got for free at a garage sale. Back in the day, we would go to Family Video (our local video store which lasted a surprisingly long time until it closed a few Atari Days ago) and rent some games for the Wiikend (see what I did there?). Then what we would do was put the game in the system, load up a program called Configurable USB Loader, and then select the option to rip the disc to the hard drive. Don't tell Nintendo! It is much, much easier to rip discs to the Wii than to find usable disc images online. At least for me, I couldn't find any good sites. So for this project I copied the games from my hard drive (I had to pick and choose because of limited space) using another program called WiiBackupManager. If you're interested, check out the GBATemp forums. It is a very good resource.
  8. That makes a lot of sense. You could also set up USB loaders if you want so you can play Wii games. Have you heard of this program called Nintendont (for some reason spelled without the apostrophe)? What it does is that it will unlock GameCube functionality for later-revision Wiis and Wii Us. It will even emulate memory cards and let you use either standard Wii controllers (like the Classic Controller or Wii Mote and Nunchuck) or use the Nintendo USB GameCube controller adapter. These newer Wii machines still can't read the discs, so you'll need to either rip the original discs to a USB device or SD card using an older-revision Wii or add some disc images online. It's a very neat program and worth looking into.
  9. I’m currently softmodding @Zerobeat2004’s Wii, as I previously mentioned. Turns out the system has a bad disc drive as well! This seems to be common as I see this stuff everywhere. I asked him about it, and he says that he hasn’t been able to properly play games on it for a couple of years now. I added a few USB loaders, so now he won’t have to worry about that good-for-nothing drive. I have to use my personal Vader-Wii (whose drive functions) to rip the game disks to flash drives, and then hook up the other Wii and plug the drives in. It’s cumbersome, but as always I’m having a lot of fun softmodding something again. Anyways, that reminded me of this old post. @RickR— did you ever get that drive fixed? Just a little curious, don’t mind me!
  10. I love the feeling of a bunch of 7800 cartridges myself! Still, the Concerto cart is hella cool. I assume it handles POKEY? I see that it came with a nice new shell and label. That’s nice. Pole Position II gets to see another day.
  11. Beating SMB1, Super Metroid, Luigi’s Mansion, Super Mario Land and World, etc., were all pretty big for me when I was a wee lad.
  12. So, I love Metroid. Especially this time of year, when I get "SUPER" nostalgic for it. I sadly could never get into Prime. I have Prime Trilogy for Wii, but the first person perspective is so confusing to me. I always get lost. I will need to take yet another crack at it this holiday season. I need to get into it! I owe it to myself as a Metroid fan. Anyways, 2D Metroid is great. I love it. I was first exposed to it around 2010, when my grandparents had first moved out of their side of the duplex and we moved in from the other side (they own/built the duplex). At the time, my godfather (currently trying to get to join the site as I think he'd enjoy) and his kids stayed over in that side for a night or two. My dad hauled up an old CRT and his SNES. That first night, five-year-old me stayed up "late" playing SMB1 on All-Stars. That next morning, I went next door to find him playing Super Metroid (I even remember that it was Maridia), and I immediately fell in love. To this day, it is still my favorite game of all-time, though for a while in late 2014- early 2016 it was taken over by the original Luigi's Mansion. I'm very fortunate that my dad kept the original cartridge, as that's one of the pricier SNES games nowadays. My godfather made me a Metroid plush and hat for Christmas of 2010. I got them on December 28th, almost ten years ago exactly. Probably the reason I get so nostalgic for Metroid this time of the year. I adored the hat and plush especially, and we went on lots of zany adventures together. I even made a "radio show" in my youth using my cassette recorder, as well as a comic series. I still have them, and never plan to get rid of them. So far, I have played and own (in some capacity) all of the official 2D Metroid games. I have the physical copies of Metroid on NES, Super Metroid on SNES, Metroid: Samus Returns on 3DS, and recently I acquired Metroid Fusion on GBA. That might not seem like a lot, but I'm actually only missing two games from a complete 2D Metroid collection! I have Metroid II: Return of Samus on my 3DS Virtual Console, and I have Metroid: Zero Mission on my Wii U. I also repurchased Metroids 1 and Super for 3DS (for portability's sake) a while back and bought Metroid Fusion on Wii U before I got the GBA cart. I have Prime Trilogy and Other M (yuck) on my Wii hard drive. I was so excited to get Other M when my godfather was hacking my Wii, and while I liked it enough when I was six, I didn't much like it afterward. Other M ruined the series, as I feel that's why we haven't seen many Metroid games recently. But I digress. I'll rank the 2D Metroid games now, from best to worst. I'll give extremely brief reasoning as well. Do know, these are my personal opinions and they do tend to fluxuate. My rankings may be different next week than they are now. If you disagree with me, I will probably tease you, but do know I mean absolutely no harm and 100% respect your opinions. I just like to mess with people sometimes! 1. Super Metroid\ A near-perfect video game. A masterpiece of great gameplay, lore, visuals, sound, and practically everything. Physics a little floaty which would be a negative point in most cases, but they work extremely well for what the game is and I wouldn't have it any other way. 2. Metroid Fusion While very linear in nature and having a few other problems, "Metroid 4" has some very good physics (that work well for the game). It's challenging and fun as well. 3. Metroid II: Return of Samus Mostly nostalgia puts it ahead its remake. The unsung hero of the Metroid series. It introduced lots to the series and is oftentimes overshadowed by its successors. Very important game story and lore-wise. Incredibly underrated. Doesn't need a built-in map like the original does. 4. Metroid: Samus Returns Thank God, another 2D Metroid. Let's get more. Does a lot right and improves on the series. Lack of power grip explanation messes up timeline. Too little atmosphere in my opinion. Like I said, nostalgia is probably the sole reason that the original goes ahead here. Still, this is one of my favorite 3DS games. 5. Metroid: Zero Mission (NOT COUNTING the built-in version of the original game, just the main game) It's fine. I should like it more than I do. Seems like "baby's first Metroid" to me. 6. Metroid Pretty aged. Somehow, it does some things better than Zero Mission. Mainly, the spawning in with 30 hp is what kills it. I guess I can cope without the map, but it is HIGHLY recommended for the first few playthroughs. Overall, alright.
  13. I played the arcade version of Venture on MAME recently. And honestly, I think I like the 2600 version more. It just plays better, though the graphics are worse and there is less content.

I like the Colecovision version.  Honestly, it's a fun game on any platform.

  14. My sister, grandparents, and I did some Christmas cookie decorating. Can you guess the characters?

What fun! I loved baking Christmas cookies with my Grandma as a kid and my daughter when she was younger.

I see Mario, Pac-Man, Blinky, the Super Star, and what I think is a Samus Aran.

      HDN

      That is correct!

I'm not an artist, and some of the better-decorated cookies were my sister's. These are pre-cut cookies, so I think if I had some better ways of applying frosting (like one of those frosting bag things) I think they could look better.

So yes, that's Gingerbread Man Samus and Mario. I used a tableknife to carve the metroid, Pac-Man, and Blinky. I think next year I will cut the cookies BEFORE they are baked. But I still think they look nice. Christmas cookies needn't be fancy. They're all going to the same place!

  15. Beat my first time (on the correct difficulty this time) by a fraction of a second. 2’25”40
  16. Disregard that first time; I did it on the wrong difficulty by mistake. Here’s my first REAL run. It was a little sloppy and I did a little pinballing on the edges. I think I can do better, but I’m not confident in my ability to win! Still love the game though. 2’33”00
  17. Sorry Rick, but it's BAAAAAAD! Special thanks to Lance, @btbfilms76, and @Justin for making such a wonderful event possible. You guys are great.
  18. I think @Justin might have included Task Force as a cruel joke, as that game is nothing else but a reskinned version of my archnemesis Gangster Alley! Ugh! The horror! I HATE GANGSTER ALLEY! I'm just messing around, and I think that was a very nice surprise for @Sabertooth. Very nice of Justin to include that. Congratulations on the paddles. But Gangster Alley? BLECH!
  19. YOU PICKED MY FAVORITE COURSE ON ONE OF MY FAVORITE RACING GAMES! YES! I'll work on a time right now! EDIT: My final time on Big Blue, first attempt, was 2'25"65. I don't have a picture as my phone is currently unavailable to me, so I took a screen capture on my Switch and will upload that or a picture of that in the morning.
  20. Interesting. Some part of me knew it would be Superman II! Excellent film. Congratulations @SuperTrooper!
  21. Huh. I thought I had posted in this thread already. Weird. Anyways, the smell of chlorine makes me very nostalgic. Every year my family and I stay in Door County at this place called The Rushes. The main building has a pool, and the entire thing is filled with that chlorine smell. That smell of chlorine and those carpets, the hum of the pool filters and the lights, the frigid cold locker rooms and arcade (back when they still had one), and I believe his name was John, who has worked at the front desk for as long as I can remember and is almost as cold as the locker rooms. Good memories. Love that place to death.
  22. I’ll trade you 2600 Pac-Man for this one, Phil! Just kidding!
  23. I'm very excited for F-Zero. I should start practicing! FIRE STINGRAY FOREVER!
  24. I recently discovered an EXCELLENT 2600 game, Fast Eddie. It reminds me a lot of Pick-Axe Pete! on Odyssey 2. And for anyone who is wondering, those are indeed caramels in the background.

Try "Miner 2049er" next.  If you've never played it, I think you'll love it.  The 2600 version is surprisingly good.

I’m not the biggest fan of 2049er. I’ll stick with Quick Edward for now.

  25. Call me a softie, but I still tend to tear up whenever I hear “Pretty Paper”. Or watch “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Or see the ending to Super Metroid (won’t spoil that one for those who haven’t yet played.

Ooof!  That's hard.  To shut down something he's worked so hard to build up.  Ah, but it's time.  The body does not lie.  Blessings to him on a well-earned retirement.  May the good Lord bless him with a long, relaxing, and rewarding retirement.
