What was the Computer in Electric Dreams (1984)?
RickR replied to MaximumRD's topic in Television & Movies
My wife and I watched Electric Dreams last night for free on the Roku Channel. It was fine. Not terrible, not great. Worthwhile to watch once. Clearly, the computer effects were supposed to be the star of show, and they were surprisingly good even now. And the computer store was a highlight. Imagic boxes! C64! So much to see there. Of note, my wife is a musician and tends to critique actors' "fake playing". But Virginia Madsen gets a passing grade. Clearly, she really does play cello. Summary: Fun movie that is harmless and takes us back in time to the 80's pretty well. -
It's a tough question because no matter what you do, someone will do what they shouldn't. I understand your dilemma, because 3D shells may not have the proper tabs and tolerances to prevent a backwards install. But maybe there's a phrase we can think of to emboss on the back of the shell that would help. "This side towards rear" "Insert with label side up" or something like that. As for if it would cause any damage...I'm not sure. Probably no damage to the console, but possibly some damage to the cart.

I think it's a nice looking watch at a very nice price. My only hold-back is that it is probably too big for my wrist.

I don't think this is the case at all. Your posts are appreciated. I hope you'll reconsider.

I got the email too. Pretty neat. But I didn't have time to investigate further.

What was the Computer in Electric Dreams (1984)?

It isn't the best quality, but do a search on youtube. -
I've had several over the years. Currently, I have the iMac shown above and also a tiny powermac that I've posted here before. Both about the same vintage...early 2000's. I've sold off a lot of what I've collected. Including a blue iMac that was cool to have, and also a much more modern powerbook that I gave to a friend to travel with. No regrets. The aesthetics of these computers are very high. Beautiful designs. But to be completely honest, they don't offer much nostalgia to me, and an old Windows PC is just as functional. My kids, though, love to see and touch them, as that's what they had in their elementary schools. Just this weekend, I saw a craigslist ad for an Mac Classic II for only $20. I was ready to pounce on that, but decided not to. I know enough to be wary....those original mac computers had the time-bomb battery that leaks acid and destroys the motherboard. So one has to decide one of two paths: Try to fix it. (This can be a very difficult project, depending on the amount of damage). Keep it around as a decoration. (as someone who is desperately trying to downsize, this is a big no-no).

OH! It is also available for free on "The Roku Channel". Added it to our watch list. -

I've never even heard of this movie. It is available for free on "Hoopla", accessed through a library system. I'm going to check it out! I didn't watch the whole video, but in the glimpses I saw, it looks a lot like a modified PCjr to me. -

Who remembers these? The buzzy vibrating football board. 100% terrible. Also 100% irresistible as a retro collectible.

A John Hancock review of the game. Looks like fun to me. Thanks for posting this.

Interesting stuff! I can appreciate the level of effort to get this far. But I'm really trying to be impartial here...it really shows how advanced the SNES was at the time. Yes, I know the Genesis wasn't really designed for a game like this. Yes, I know the technical challenge these developers overcame to get the game this far.

Defintiely one of my better finds in recycling!
RickR replied to MaximumRD's topic in Modern Computing
Wow! Nice find. I've been given a couple of computers lately, but they've not been good enough to fix up and give away. First one was an old Dell desktop in incredible condition. But it's a core 2 duo. Since this computer was originally sold with Vista, it won't auto activate Windows 10, and thus is not worth the time to fix and give. This one will be off to e-cycle. Still, it was really nice to see a 20 year old computer in such fine condition. Second was a much more promising AMD Phenom II X4 home built system. This one would run Win 10 fine, but I decided the case was way too big for the type of person that would take a computer for free. So I parted it out and gave the big case to a local enthusiast. I'm not sure what to do with the motherboard and CPU yet. Probably e-cycle them. -
I'm hoping you'll bring any extra 8-bit copies to the SideQuest Portland expo in April?
