  1. The Atari VCS version of Centipede Recharged has 10 exclusive Challenges. They are much harder than the first 30 and have some nice references to the classic sprites. I've got one left to clear!

Thanks, Justin! I appreciate it. At the time of the blog I hadn't yet unlocked the VCS Challenges. They were really difficult. I may try a video review (my first) but work has been insane of late!

I would love to see that! 👍🕹️

  2. I won a signed, limited edition Evercade as a part of a very cool fundraiser for EveryoneCanUK. I'm a big fan of the handheld and I'm stoked to win and donate to a good cause.  Here is their announcement via Twitter:

Just read your new Blog post! Excellent review! Looks like an amazing game!

  4. Been playing the new Centipede: Recharged on the Atari VCS for the past few hours. It's actually a cool modern interpretation on the classic. It has an endless arcade mode, 30 unlockable challenges, achievements, and local Co-op. Also, the music is stunning.

It's available on all major console platforms - Xbox, PS4/5, Switch, Steam (PC) - via digital tomorrow.  Based on the VCS version, I'd say it's well worth the $9.99 if you have any of those platforms and are a fan of the original.

  5. I played the new(ish) Centipede arcade game - Centipede Chaos - this past week. It's a ticket redemption game and is quite fun. Anyone else tried it?

@socrates63this was at a Dave & Busters. They had a lot of fun retro updates. Space Invaders, Giant PAC-MAN and Galaga, Four Player PONG, a new version of Rampage based on the recent film. Centipede was my favorite of the bunch despite the lack of a track ball.

  6. A quick short of my current Jaguar collection. It includes all released retail titles, post-Atari releases from Songbird and Telegames, several demos and homebrews including "grails" like Battlesphere Gold and Another World.

Enter the madness of a Jaguar collector...

Incredibly done.  I look forward to seeing the games in more detail.

  7. So I scored Astal for Sega Saturn a week ago on eBay.  It was advertised in great shape with the case intact.  The seller puts it in a priority mail with no bubble wrap or paper which obviously would allow for jostling during shipment.  Unsurprisingly, another Saturn case is needlessly ruined.  I reached out to the seller explaining the situation and asked for a partial refund of $8 for the case.  This is based on the cost of 10 replacement cases from Limited Run.  Instead of taking any responsibility for the poor packing, he suggested that I open a claim with USPS stating that the item wasn't damaged when he put it in the box!

I have a real problem with opening a claim because it truly is due to a lack of packing and not USPS.  I'd like to keep the game as they are getting harder to come by.  Its really not the money at all its the point of the thing.  I can't imagine sending a good Saturn case out like that.  I know that many of you buy and sell on eBay.  Is a negative or neutral rating warranted?

I had a case I mentioned in the "recent finds" forum thread.  I bought 3 SMS games.  Two of them had the wrong game in the casing.  I was able to salvage two of the three.  I contacted the seller, and they gave me a 1/3 partial refund.  Very fair.  I left a positive.

    3. Sabertooth

      Sabertooth

That's the thing isn't it? Even though I was disappointed, if someone tries to make it right or at least acknowledge their responsibility, I'm good. It didn't need to go the way it did.

Also, the 50s board game story is heartbreaking. I don't get that kinda disregard for your customers. At least they refunded your friend.

    4. socrates63

      socrates63

I had a few cases where the item arrived damaged or didn't match the condition described. I always offered the seller that I'd keep it for a partial refund, and they've always accepted my proposal for a partial refund (usually around $5 on $15-$20 item). I usually don't do this and will just accept the item and go on with my life but have complained in a few instance. In this case, I wouldn't bother with USPS either as Rick suggested. I'd suggest going directly to ebay and reporting that the item arrived damaged and you want a full refund.

A month ago, I bought an Xbox 360 game on ebay. It was supposed to be in "good" condition, but when I got it, most of the cover had water damage. The angle and lighting of the photos in the listing did not show the damage nor was it disclosed. I notified the seller and provided photos. I offered to keep it if he gave me $12 refund (it was $20 + $4 shipping), but he asked me to return it for full refund  instead (although the listing indicated that the seller does not accept returns).

At that point, I didn't want to interact directly with the seller, and I triggered ebay's return process. It was very smooth and fast. I was a little surprised to see that the shipping cost would be refunded and ebay even provided a free return shipping label. In all my years of purchasing from ebay, this was my first return. As a consumer, ebay's return process gave me confidence.

  8. You don't have to have a VCS to check out Antstream Arcade. I know I've mentioned it before but it's a ton of fun with a fantastic selection of games, tournaments and score challenges. I highly recommend it!

Up now, a Robotron 2084 single life challenge!

      socrates63

I've ordered two or three times from both Best and V61. I never knew about getting banned from Best 😆. I always followed the instructions and things went smoothly.

My last purchase had a minor hiccup because of a comment I made on the phone. Since he didn't take paypal, I called in to give him my credit card number. Well, I mistakenly called during non-business hours, and naturally, no one answered. I got a hold of Bradley on a later call and made the mistake of mentioning that I had called once previously and no one picked up. He seemed slightly annoyed 😄

Lance, on the other hand, has been much more cordial and easier to buy from 😄

  13. I spent the last hour or so cleaning and testing a box of loose carts that have been in a garage for years. So far all of them work in a stock Jr.  The third party carts were a little finicky in a 7800 and Retro 77. Atari carts all loaded with no issue.

I did have one mystery cart in the bunch. Any guesses?

Thanks for mentioning that it's a Sega.  I was wracking my brain trying to remember who made carts with those ridges.

      I'm going to guess "Tac-Scan".

It's not Tac-Scan @RickR. The variety of cart styles is one of my favorite aspects of the 2600!

  15. I just beat my first VCS game! It's a title called Spear Master. The gameplay is reminiscent of Buster Bros., where you split bouncing balls in half until they are eliminated. Spear Master lacks the platform element of that game and has a one-touch death mechanic that slows progress.

The game was built with Unity and is on VCS and Steam. It was a lot of fun all around and had a lot of polish.

  16. I got a thing...

I haven't formed any real opinions yet except that PowerA did a hell of a job with both controllers.

Wow! Would love to hear your thoughts about the classic style joystick

    2. Sabertooth

      Sabertooth

@Justin - So far the controllers are the most interesting thing about the hardware. The Classic Joystick works great as a paddle in 2600 games and as a rotary in Tempest arcade on the Vault. The game Thrustlander implements the rotation function wonderfully. As a normal 🕹️ it is also very nice. I've used it on Antstream for PacMan and Lock N Chase and it's been great. I'll probably do a full blog post once I spend more time with it.

  17. R.I.P. Fry's Electronics.

Fry's closed all locations on Wednesday with no forewarning. It was one of the last places I could still buy electronics components in-person. Need a 7805 regulator for that ailing 2600? How about a few resistors for that AV mod? Replacements for a leaky cap? They had me covered without the wait of an online order.

It was a quirky, hodgepodge type store with a lot of "As seen on TV" products along side computer, electronics and stereo equipment. It shall be missed.

      RickR

I agree.  I'm going to miss them.

There's a lot of hate on-line about Fry's that I don't quite get.  A lot of people lost jobs.  And I'm really going to miss being able to go and actually see and touch the items I need.  Sometimes, you need that ability to help decide how to solve a particular problem.

Fry's.  R.I.P.  You will be missed.

    2. AtariSphinx

      AtariSphinx

One of the only stores I would just go to just to browse/walk around.

Each store, perhaps a bit outdated, had a decore and even store exterior around a theme with my favorites being the Aztec and ancient Egypt.  For example in the Egypt theme store had some computer display desks where supported by large black ancient cats rather than desk legs and hieroglyphics on the walls.

Will also miss going there to find cables that other stores don't stock in store.

For the year prior the pandemic could tell it was going down hill fast as the shelves were half empty and with poor online solution could tell they were not going to make it long when the pandemic hit.

  18. I'm planning a retro gaming "battle jacket" in a punk/metal style.  I'm currently agonizing over the image to use for the back patch which is the centerpiece of any battle jacket.  I've narrowed it down to Joust, Missile Command and RoadBlasters...

  23. These Evercade Lynx collections are fantastic. Aside from the lack of a Comlynx port, the games play flawlessly and look great. The screen is big and bright and they included some real heavy hitters, including California Games, Checkered Flag, Blue Lightning and Chip's Challenge. At a fraction of the cost of a McWill modded Lynx and 25 carts this is great way to experience these games!

I've really enjoyed the Evercade. The collections so far have been pretty good, the screen is nice and HDMI out is a great touch. Also, having the collections on carts is fun and unique for an emulation system. I'm hoping they do a console version that takes the same software.

  24. I feel "deep retro" at the moment. Listening to the Cars debut record with turntable through the Atari Video Music while giving Demon Attack one more go on a 4-switch Sears Video Arcade and CRT. #deepretro #innovativeleisure
