I didn't play it on day one, but I was excited when I finally did. I actually really enjoyed it and thought the sounds were cool. When I got my 7800, I was eager to get a copy. I didn't hear about it's bad reputation until after 2000! So I blame Y2K. I also blame Y2K for E.T. bad rep....

I didn't yet have a video game system at all when Pac-Man came out for the 2600, but one of my neighbors had it. I was surprised when I saw it (I was seven years old) because of how different it looked and how weird it sounded. But even at that young age, I figured that the developers at Atari were working with what they had on hand and could only do so much. I've always been a massive Pac-Man fan, so I nearly passed out when my brother and I got a 4-switcher for Christmas in 1982...and my parents also bought Pac-Man and stuck it in the box, so I was quite happy! I knew very well that it was virtually nothing like the arcade version, but I didn't care: I had a way to play Pac-Man at home, and I spent hours on end playing it. (And I always thought it looked great when you flip the TV TYPE switch to BW.)

EATING it is a friend; PREPARING it is a foe...such a PITA to do. Have to pluck the leaves off the stem, which takes a long friggin' time, and it's very difficult to successfully store properly if you don't eat it all in one sitting.

Might as well contribute my thoughts...in no particular order:

    Pinball Dreams / Pinball Fantasies
Grouped as one. Never played Pinball Illusions. I had a copy of Slam Tilt when I bought my Amiga 4000 used, but I could never get it to load properly. But Pinball Dreams was the first thing I ever experienced on an Amiga, a friend's A500. wipEout2097
I have a soft spot in my heart for racing games. I bought this as soon as I got a Cyberstorm PPC accelerator for my A4000. Sadly, that card went south very quickly, so I didn't get much play out of it until I got the AmigaOne. But man...such a smooth 3D space racer. Really dug it a LOT. Walker
I think it was the graphics that impressed me the most. Super-high-res and smooth gameplay. Desert Strike
I played it on the Sega Genesis when my brother had one, so I had to seek out an Amiga version. On one hand, I was disappointed that it didn't have the inertia options that were available on the Genesis version, but on the other hand, I loved that it had extra digitized voices. Never could win the game, though, even with a trainer installed. (The Leader always escaped.) Klax
You will never, EVER find a better version of Klax than on the Amiga. It's even better than the arcade version. Archer Maclean's Pool
Not the most popular title on the Amiga, but I loved it. I always enjoyed playing pool and ergo always liked pool video games. Good 3D views, and some amusing hidden animations. Lemmings
Because why not? Such a classic. Scorched Tanks
Shareware equivalent to Scorched Earth. Just the overall strategy in the game; really loved it. Vroom
I stumbled on this game accidentally. I feel it gets hugely ignored, mainly because of the Lotus series. There are other racing games on the Amiga that look a bit prettier, but this by far was the smoothest and most enjoyable, IMHO. Deluxe Pac-Man
Because I HAVE to include a Pac-Man game. 🙂 Been a big Pac-Man fan since 1981. I was a poor college student when I first started with the Amiga, and this was one of the few shareware titles I actually registered. The late Edgar Vigdal designed a really great Pac-Man clone. He also did a great Galaga clone called Deluxe Galaga that's eons better than the original Galaga. (It was also out on smart phones under the title "Warblade," but given that Edgar is no longer with us and ergo can't update the code, it might not run on said phones any more.)

I finally got my 7800 today. It's a bit disappointing that it only came with Pole Position II because they said they'd put a few games with it, but I don't really mind. I like PP2 quite a bit. I wish I had Food Fight though.
I also like the ProLine controllers. I tested them with a few games. It worked good with PP2 and Pac-Man, but not so good with Defender and Tunnel Runner.

FWIW, the show did not pin the crash on E.T. and Pac-Man -- the narration certainly did up-play them as causes, but the narrator said something like "along with a flood of low-quality third-party games" or something.
I watched the rest of the series. Personally, I think it was highly enjoyable. I was disappointed that there aren't more episodes than there are.

BTW, those of you who haven't seen it yet...it's not something you can watch unless you plan to keep your eyes on the screen at all times: in almost every episode, there are talking heads with Japanese creators who speak in their native tongue, subtitled in English. Unless you speak Japanese, you'll miss out if you're multitasking. 🙂

    As someone who's been a 2600 owner since December 25, 1982, I say...YES, GET A 7800. Got mine in 2006 after being envious of a friend's 7800 for 14 years. 🙂

Get the 7800. Your first priority is to make sure you have the following games, in order of priority, absolutely most important first:
Food Fight Centipede Ball Blazer Asteroids Robotron 2084 Heck, buying a 7800 is worth it just for Food Fight.
(And I was never a fan of the 7800 Ms. Pac-Man. The colors are a bit off, you don't slow down as you eat dots, and you get 40 points for energizers instead of 50.)
One cool thing about the games I mentioned -- you don't need the PainLine controllers, because they're only single-button games.
When you do build up your collection and get some two-button games (there are surprisingly few), you'll want to invest in one of the many homebrew 7800 controllers out there. There are ones that are basically built like NES controllers, or you can get the Seagull 78 that NSG mentioned before, or if you really don't mind splurging and want some really awesome controller action, anything Edladdin makes is just famazing. I personally own the All Play 4/8 Supreme 78 and the Twin Super 78, and love 'em both. Ed can also customize your controllers so that the buttons are CORRECTLY PLACED TO THE LEFT OF THE JOYSTICK, or if you're one of those new-fangled players who likes the joystick on the left, he can do that too. 🙂
And for guidance, listen to NSG's Atari 7800 Game By Game Podcast. It's long over (he covered all the games), but it's a great unbiased guide to the games, and it's one of the most fun video game podcasts out there. If you want to dig into the homebrews (YOU DO), check out the podcast that came about literally right after NSG's finished, The Atari 7800 Homebrew Podcast. (I hear the host is a jerk, though.)

As for the Easy 78, can't say from personal experience, but my understanding is that Ed actually uses that in all his controllers, so...heck, yes, consider that thing!
