  1. We will list the roster of games being played for each season, well in advance of the start of the season. Atari Cup Tournament is our team play event, so it's the most sensitive to player participation. As part of a team where each player's score counts towards the team score, players need to participate in each game as not to let the team down. The games played in Atari Cup will be the most loved titles that most everybody should have access to. Think "Asteroids, Space Invaders, Super Mario Bros." etc. We will post games long enough in advance for players to be able to obtain an emulator or a copy of a game they're missing before season starts.

  2. Justin - would the trak-ball versions of Centipede & Millipede qualify? I have screenshots of my scores from the Houston ArcadeExpo from both of these titles. Of course, I'd post the Centipede scores only here.

    just wondering......

Hi Arena! We're just playing regular classic Centipede for this challenge. Everybody has it, it's on all of the Flashback systems, something everyone can play. We will have lots of ways for you to play hacks and homebrews in other events  ^_^

It sounds like you have some pretty good scores documented though! Why not open up a thread for Centipede TB on the Scoreboard and post your scores? Justin has two up already if you need an example. http://forums.atari.io/index.php/forum/70-scoreboard/

    Have fun!

^ that's a great idea.  I might do that...because the hacked version is really a lot of fun.

^GREAT suggestion Professor! This is exactly why the Scoreboard exists!  :wreck-it-ralph_anim:

Arenafoot, your scores are something special. I would encourage you to start a new Scoreboard thread for Centipede TB and Millipede TB and post your scores! Someone else may come along and try to top them. Scoreboard offers casual competitive gaming in an open format without deadlines or even the need for another player. Think of it as a friendly and relaxed Twin Galaxies. It's a great format for setting high scores on hacks, homebrews, and arcade games. You could have an amazing score and somebody else could spend all year trying to top it.

Hacked versions of games could also be played in Danisen League so long as both players agree on terms beforehand. High scores achieved in Squad, Danisen League, or Atari Cup can always be added to the Scoreboard if you think your high score merits recognition.

    How To Play

You and a friend choose any game you wish and battle it out for the high score. Best of 3 wins! When you're finished, post your results here! You and a friend pick the game, choose your difficulty settings, agree on your own personal rules.

Single Life Runs and 3-Minute Runs are fine! Any game, any system. Play against each other 3 times in short high score contests. Whoever wins best of 3 wins the 2-Player Battle!

    Pro-Tip

To avoid a never-ending game, we recommend playing short matches with increased difficulty settings. If a never-ending game appears possible, try a timed match like a 3-Minute Run or Single Life Run.

    2-player_battle_starting_your_match.gif.

Challenge a friend in the forums to go head-to-head in a 2-Player Battle, playing in your own one-on-one high score contest to see who wins. It's up to you and a friend to initiate the match, pick a game, and decide what rules and difficulty settings you'll be playing with.

Play three short high score contests on whatever game you want. (You can even set your own rules if you'd like. For example, a 3-Minute Run on Asteroids, or a Single Life Run on Super Mario Bros.) Do this three times! Whoever wins best of 3 wins the 2-Player Battle!

    Example

You and a friend challenge each other to a game of Missile Command. (You can choose any game you wish!)  Take 3 turns, and record the winner each time. Whoever wins best out of 3 wins the battle!

    Why 2-Player Battle?

There's no "Xbox Live for Atari", no way to challenge friends online to play 2-Players against each other on classic game systems like Atari 2600 and Nintendo Entertainment System.

So let's do this: 2-Player Battle is an approximation of that idea, it's a structured way of playing against a friend in the forums the same way we used to play against a friend sitting on the floor in front of the TV. "I bet you can't beat my high score!" Instead of playing online, keep track of your high scores the old fashioned way!

    scoring.gif.22214894431635a0f4f1afd6a844

Play 3 Times, Best of 3 Wins!

2-Player Battle is an easy concept. You're playing against a friend to see who can beat the other person in a game. Play 3 times. Whoever wins 2 out of 3 times wins the 2-Player Battle.

Your Score Doesn't Matter, All That Matters Is Your Victory

2-Player Battle is just for fun! The scores you achieve don't really matter, we're only counting Wins and Losses. What really matters is did you beat your friend 2 out of 3 times? If YES, you're the winner! Post your match in the forums to share your achievement. We'll show you how below:

    2-player_battle_posting_your_match.gif.1

In 2-Player Battle you're posting your Wins and Losses rather than the score. Format your topic title with the name of your game, console, 2-Player Battle, and player names. It should look like this:

    2-Player Battle - Missile Command (Atari 2600) - btbfilms76 vs. Justin

In the body of the post, tell us about your match by posting 1.) Who won the 2-Player Battle, 2.) The game you played, 3.) The game system you played on, 4.) The date you played, and 5.) List Round 1, 2, & 3 and who won each round. Post the results using the format below. When you've finished posting, it should look like this:

    WINNER: btbfilms76
    Missile Command
    Atari 2600
    May 9, 2020

    ROUND 1: @btbfilms76
    ROUND 2: @Justin
    ROUND 3: @btbfilms76

If you and your friend continue playing more rounds of that game in the future, with the same game and two players, you can continue posting in the same topic thread to post the results of your new matches.

    Who Posts The Match?

Either you or your friend can post the results to the Forums! It doesn't really matter, so long as one of you does it. It's all just for fun! A good rule-of-thumb is to have the Winner of the 2-Player Battle make the post.

    Moderator Approval

You'll find when you post your results to the Forums the post won't appear immediately. Just like with the Scoreboard, posts made to 2-Player Battle require a Moderator's approval before being posted to the Forums. All Moderators will be notified of your post and will seek to approve it quickly. The reason for this is to have a Moderator assure that the 2-Player Battle was played correctly, and assure consistent formatting in posts.

    2-player_battle_rules.gif.7112db03513de4

    Eligibility

Anyone can join in. All players are welcome!

    3 Rounds

Your match should include 3 rounds of gameplay. Whoever wins 2 out of 3 rounds of gameplay wins the 2-Player Battle.

Real Hardware, Emulation & Dedicated Consoles

Games may be played on real Atari hardware, dedicated (Flashback) console, or emulation, using any joystick or keyboard, following rules and game settings as agreed upon between both players.

    Fair Play

Players should play fairly, be honest, and have fun! Falsified scores will result in your immediate banning from the site. It goes without saying that no use of cheats, hacks, cartridge frying, emulation enhancements, photoshop, or any other unfair advantage is allowed. Everybody hates a cheater.

Do I Have To Post A Photo?

No! But you can if you want to. 2-Player Battle is just for fun! Posting the results of your match in the forums is a fun way of sharing your gameplay with other people, and keeping track of Wins & Losses just like we used to do in the back of Atari instruction manuals. You can include a photo or YouTube video of your match in your post, BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO. It's just for fun.

Photos can be uploaded and attached to your post. To include a YouTube video in your post, copy your video's YouTube link and paste into your post where you want the video to appear. Your video will appear in your post where you pasted the link.

Do I Have To Send A Photo Of My Score To My Opponent?

No! But it's a good idea. Photos are not required in 2-Player Battle, but it's a good idea to include a photo of your score in communications with your friend to establish your score and determine a winner of each Round. If you and a friend decide to play using the honor system and not send photos, that's fine too.

Atari Cup Tournament - Organized teams play against each other to win the ultimate prize - The Atari Cup!  Think of this like professional sports teams, or your local kickball team with your friends.

Teams will play in Spring and Fall Seasons. Games will be announced every other week, during Seasons. In the beginning there will be three teams consisting of 3 players each, organized by region. Three more expansion teams will be added as more new players sign up. After the expansion teams launch we will expand teams to 4 players. Though there's not a real trophy, players on the winning team will receive a special overlay on their Avatars through the next season!

Teams will compete against each other for a different game every other week. (Washington Warlords vs. Houston Asteroids, playing for the high score in Missile Command on Atari 2600 that week) Multiple teams playing multiple games against each other. There will be a Fall season and a Spring season. Top teams go to the playoffs, and ultimately only ONE team will win the championship and the coveted Atari Cup!

Different High Score Challenges will be posed every other week during the season. An example of an Atari Cup Challenge would be to play the same game on several different systems and add up the score. Let's say, one challenge may be to play Donkey Kong on 2600, NES, and 7800. Every player on the team will play all three games, then all of the scores are added up for a team total! Challenges will differ game by game.

The Credibility Of Your Score: Posting a YouTube video of your game goes a long way to substantiating credibility. A photo of your score is all that's required, but we strongly encourage recording your gameplay if you can. Especially if you have ridiculous skills and can claim to have rolled the game eight times. We want our contests to be open to everyone, but it's important to be open and honest about scoring. Using your cellphone to post a video on YouTube is often enough.

What Is The Scoreboard And How Does It Work?

The Scoreboard is a Database of high scores achieved by Members in our community. Scores only get added to the Scoreboard when someone beats the previous score. Think of the Scoreboard like a High Score screen at the end of an arcade game. You want to leave your mark! Some arcades have big chalkboards when you first walk in, with handwritten high scores for each game in the arcade. Pretty soon word gets around and everybody knows your initials! The Scoreboard is a place in the forums to come to share your personal high scores. Just like the screen where you enter your initials, posts are in a minimalist bare-bones format. We do it that way so it's easy to find the scores you're looking for. And because a new score is only added if it's the new high score for the page, you know the further you scroll down the higher the scores will be.

Why Is It Important To Post In This Format?

We need your help to keep the Scoreboard easy to read and quickly look up scores! For the same reason a High Score screen on an arcade game keeps things clean and simple, we have to keep our Scoreboard in a simple, organized format too. High Scores submitted without being property formatted are subject to editing or removal.

Search For Your Game On The Scoreboard Before You Post

Avoid creating duplicate threads for the same game title and system. Before posting, search to see if a thread has already been started for this game title. Games are listed alphabetically and by system to make them easy to find. You can also use the search bar at the top right of the page search the forum for the system you're posting your score for to see if a thread has already been started for this game. If it has, you should post your new high score in the existing thread. If not, you'll be the first to post a new High Score!

Only Post If You Have The New High Score For The Thread

Post your score only if it's the highest score so far on the page! Think of the Scoreboard like a High Score screen at the end of an arcade game. It's easy to follow. We do it that way so it's easy to scroll down and easily find scores. You know the further you scroll down the page, the higher the scores will be. Please only post if you have achieved a new high score for the thread.

Why Do My Scoreboard Posts Not Appear Right Away?

Did you post your score in the Scoreboard, but it didn't immediately appear? That's okay! We've received your score and will review it first before it goes live. Posts to the Scoreboard require approval by a Moderator prior to appearing in the Forums. This is done as a moderation measure to fix improper formatting, filter out superfluous posts and maintain the integrity of the Scoreboard.

    The Credibility Of Your Score

The scoreboard is for “Nerd Cred” only. Games are meant to be fun and we don’t have officials on hand to verify scores. The credibility of your score is going to be upon you to make it believable. Posting a YouTube video of your game goes a long way to substantiating credibility. A photo of your score is all that's required, but a video of your performance is even better! Especially if you're the type of gamer to have ridiculous skills and can roll the score over. Using your cell phone to take a photo or video of your score is a good way to go.

Photos can be uploaded and attached to your post to substantiate your score! A YouTube link can be included in your post to show a video of your performance. To include a YouTube video in your post, copy your video's YouTube link and paste into your post where you want the video to appear. Your video will appear in your post where you pasted the link.

Screen captures are not allowed as they are easily Photoshopped
