  1. No, man....speed is controlled on the 8-bit using the 0-9 keys.  "Speed 4, Mr. Sulu".

actually both of you are right, and i agree. i should not be to hard on the game, i know it was ground breaking at the time. i guess i am partial to the first person view in star raiders II, it always impressed me, but as games and memory expanded, i should know better.

i used to carry a atari 8-bit 128k first person perspective game, i cannot remember it now, but it involved a asteroid, and it was impressive.

  2. It's about time the 5200 got some attention in the home brew department.  It's mostly the 2600, 7800, and 8-bits that get the attention.  And as Lance knows by now the 5200 is my all-time favorite console and I don't feel the console gets the positive attention it deserves.  As I have also told Lance I know that the 5200 controllers are not perfect but I don't know how many 2600/7800 controllers I've come across where those dome contacts are collapsed, meaning they either need to be replaced or another joystick purchased.  At least with the 5200 controllers the buttons can be brought back to life just by cleaning or doing small mods.  I'm actually grateful that the 5200 never got those dome contacts.

I'm honored to be a part of this project.  Lance says I'm obsessed with the 5200 but that's an understatement...I'm hardcore 5200 insane!!  LOL.  It's a great game and the 5200 really doesn't have a top-down shooter that I am aware of.  Actually...aside from a few arcade games and one first-person perspective shooting game, it really doesn't have many shooters.  Hopefully this will help round out the 5200 game library a bit.  It was very much needed on the 5200.  However if it wouldn't have been for Peter we would not have this wonderful game to try to bring to the 5200.

Oh...and...LOL...it's k-a-m-a-k-a-z-i, Lance.  I'm not Japanese although I think I'm turning Japanese LOL.  I hope the rest of the 5200 community will enjoy this game on their 5200.

artisan spelled it for me:) yes the 5200 is going to get some well deserved attention. atari never made it easy to support either the 5200 or the 7800. we hope to cure that. the great thing is that they all use some form of the 6502. that sure helps.

  3. "Secretum Labyrinth Kings Gold" is a freeware/demoware game I made for the 8-bit a few years ago so people get a taste of what I am developing.

"Secretum Labyrinth The Legend" is a 64K ROM cartridge that uses the 64K of RAM on the 8-bit, that is has a much larger dungeon to explore, and many more things to do.

When it came time to port some games to the 5200, I decided, why not also attempt to port the Secretum Labyrinth engine over also. I started with porting using the database from "Kings Gold" so I have some test data to compare it to. But later in the process I decided to come up make something new I can add to this series of games. I had all this stuff I was experimenting with for optimization, improving the graphics, game play, and fitting more into a smaller space. So I applied that to this 5200 cartridge.

I have been looking to add other RPG (Role Playing Game) and Adventure like elements into this. So this will have some things we had not yet seen in the prior Secretum Labyrinth games.

plus we wanted to give the game its own unique name for the 5200 version. we toyed around with a few other words, and just the letter "X". i think we have a good name. peter is doing a good job as usual programming the game.

  4. here is our newest demo for the 5200 game "Secretum Labyrinth Xenogenesis". we will try to keep everyone updated as we progress. as you see, its going to be a awesome 5200 release. peter has put together a very good game here. there has been some input from others in our group, and some help in the conversion to the 5200.

  5. If it's trak-ball compatible, this would be a killer title for the 5200.  5200 Missile Command and Centipede with trak-ball are must-own games for that system.  They take the 5200 up to another level.  A level of control that you can't find on any other system.

i will check mine with the trak-ball a.s.a.p.. then let you know.

  6. Anyone who is looking to purchase Tempest Elite and play it on their VBXE system, please hold off until we get this latest update checked by our beta tester. There appears to be some issues with other hardware present, such as Ultimate 1MB, other memory upgrades, and with various versions of the firmware. There is something called a color map which allow VBXE to change the color registers in different areas of the screen. Similar to a Commodore 64 color screen map, or think of doing DLIs, but able to split sections vertically. The color map set up of Tempest Elite had to removed because it was cause the sprite overlay map not to appear on top of the web. May possibly not working with certain system hardware configurations.

In VBXE mode the web background will be a strait 320x192 mode without any lane highlighting and the spikes will be a dotted line to distinguish them from the web lane lines. VBXE has the ability to make the pixel and background two true separate colors.

been watching the fix on youtube, hopefully we have a winner.

  7. I tried a version of this that must have been quite incomplete.  The gameplay was slow and things did not work quite right.

this one seems to play well, and look well. the explosion for the DDT is right on. no slowdown at all in the game, or jerkyness. the only problem i am having is that e-prom one copies perfect, i cannot get the second e-prom to copy at all. i will keep trying, otherwise i cannot release the game. so keep your fingers crossed.

  8. I remember playing this through emulation and really enjoyed that title screen. The only 5200 title screen I have seen with some animation. Spot on arcade conversion too. Really well done game. Another one of those "why" moments. It is a shame there is not a way to release this and the other games you have show s.

yes its a better start than most 5200 games. i like the opening screen also.

I just moved into a new home with the perfect space for creating my own home arcade. It’s about 2/3 of a single car garage, enough space to have fun and do something creative. It’s only a Lynx in there now, but hopefully soon I’ll be making some big additions when I can track them down  ^_^

The space is bigger than it looks, about 6’ x 20’ with 15 foot ceilings, so there will be lots of room for me to line up a few arcade machines in here and do something really cool above them. I was thinking about adding a projector to project movies and games on the wall above the arcade machines.  I think it would be really cool to see some classic games running on a loop projected onto the wall above. I'll also make room for an arcade-style mini-fridge with the glass door stocked with my favorite drinks. I’d like for it to feel like a real arcade and still be an awesome addition to my home. Ever since I moved far away from my favorite arcades I’ve felt the need to create my own arcade at home just the way I want it. So here we go.

awesome justin, don't forget the 32 inch tube t.v. for maximum gaming enjoyment:) one of my trusty tubes is biting the dust, a philco 32 inch tube t.v., with all of the jack panel goodies. i have one more in reserve. we expect pics of a 7800 game running via your sony 32 incher:) in your new gaming room posted soon.

  10. I managed to convert 9 different games I have the rights and make them playable on the 5200. Amokbots, Delta Space Arena, HeliCommander, Laser Blast X, Megaoids 2016, Putt 18 Miniature Golf, Surround'Em, Tile Smashers, and Venture.

The only game that is still in the process of being ported is a version of Secretum Labyrinth. I originally wanted to port "Secretum Labyrinth Kings Gold" over. However since that game was a free download for the Atari 8-bit area, I decided to make it worthwhile for people to purchase and change things around inside its realm. It will have a new room map, and stuff moved to all new locations. A new store is being written with a new sub title. Include a few features I had been developing for next cartridge game for the 8-bit.

we will be starting the beta testing process in a week or so. i cannot wait to announce these games when they become available. it was always my dream to port some of our games over to other atari platforms, it looks like those dreams are about to become reality.

we will try to keep the atari community posted and updated with current information as it becomes available.

  11. I am working on a port over to the 5200 and trying to work with its 32K ROM + 16K RAM limitations. Trying to get this Deflate + Inflate routines to help compress things to within the memory we need.  I will also be reusing the techniques used to make it fit into a smaller memory space to help the next big Atari 8-bit game (Secretum Labyrinth III) game do more. It may use a 64K Williams Cartridge or a 128K AtariMax Cartridge.

we should be able to put it on a stock 128k atari xe e-prom super cart.

  12. Cool, then I need to check if my XEGS has the 64K required memory.  Thank you.

the XEGS comes stock right out of the box with 64k. to make sure all of the ram is there in working condition, just run the memory test by holding down the option key, then turn on the computer, you will get the test screen options. pick the memory one.

here is a video of it:

  13. How on earth are you making that earth? Are you throwing the system into an alternate mode? Your earth looks like it's being generated by a 16-bit graphics engine. I've never seen anything like that on an Atari 8-Bit. Is this on a cartridge? Can you explain a bit about what is going on here (with the earth during end credits) and how this is possible on an Atari 8-Bit?

its pretty cool programming no doubt about it. peter is a wizard :)

  15.

The 2600 version looks almost as good.

agreed. the game is not as smooth as defender on the 8-bit/5200, its a bit rugged and jerky.

    Huge thanks for sharing.

    you are welcome.

Why don't I have this? Why don't you have this? Why didn't Atari RELEASE this and so many others they had done for the 5200??? Why, why, why?

this problem goes back even further than the typical jack t. antics.

That looks very nice! Too bad it was not released.

it should have been. it was a natural for the 5200 joysticks.
