  1. ITC# 51 is now online and documents the process to installing a very interesting new mod PCB that has been developed and hopefully will soon be released to the masses. It is called the M1 Double Mega. It is a plug in pcb board specifically designed for the model 1 HDG genesis systems that have separate YM2612 synth ICs in them (Most model 1s do as only the va7 doesn't have one). It allows you to use both the stock YM2612 and CMOS improved pin compatible YM3438 with the ability to switch between them. The YM3438 improves upon the 2612's stereo separation field and has an improved DAC circuit to provide cleaner PCM samples from the Genesis/Megadrive. There are some small audio comparisons at the end where I switch between the two chips on the fly.

    Enjoy!

  2. The missus and I will also be attending PRGE for the first time. I've attended CGE in the past and of course until 2 years ago had been hosting my own much smaller con here in Oklahoma for 12 years.

We will be arriving on Thursday and staying through the weekend. I believe we are in a hotel just a block from the event so we aren't planning to get a rental car or anything. Hopefully we don't have a real need for one.

  3. Yes, you would still need to cut a small notch out of the RF shielding for the audio input wire you have there. (I assume the yellow is audio input since it is tied to two resistors, one for each TIA channel?)

Unless there is just enough space to wedge that wire between the audio tuning coil? But you would have to desolder it from the resistors, thread the wire through the RF opening for that coil to come through and then solder it back down. Things like that are why I solder on header connectors to most of the wiring so I can easily take it loose for full disassembly without have to desolder stuff.

  4. Also you can literally grab your ground for these AV mods from anywhere. Take any multimeter and you will see that all grounds have continuity with each other in these old systems. So..to make it easier I will usually just find the nearest ground point around the circuit I'm grabbing my signals from to be sure it is proper. In the case of the 7800 UAV mod I use the grounds off the UAV board itself. But honestly you could just grab the ground off of any part of the large ground plane around the main board and attach that to to your RCA connections and be fine.

  5. Yes the metal strips where you placed them should be fine. I still would have tried to solder on some wire instead to make sure it was all grounded properly. I still think part of the issue is that you don't have actual RF shielding on the system anymore. I see this kind of thing even on modded consoles like my Colecovision, Intellivision, and especially the 7800 if I don't find ways to put the RF shielding back on.

And yes I believe console5 only has 1amp and up output VRs that he sells. I bought my 2amp output versions from him last time I believe and that is what I have running in my sega Genesis.

  6. I hadn't thought of power...but could be. The original VRs are only like what.. 500ma rated? And that could have been pushing it already to near that limit with all the components installed. Wonder if a newer and higher output 1amp version 7805 would help?

Especially when the newer homebrew games also take up some juice to power the additional chips in them that they have.

  7. ITC#49 has been published....

In this video I demonstrate the difference in audio between a stock Sega Genesis model 1 va3 and the same Genesis with Firebrandx's new audio bypass amplifier mod board. In a nutshell this board replaces the internal audio amplifier Sony chip with a new one. It provides much more rich audio and increases the volume to properly line level audio output.

This mod is really designed for those who like myself, have RCA audio output jacks installed on their genesis for line level audio to AV receivers. The only editing done on these audio tracks in the video was that all audio samples were normalized for similar volume levels and 5 sec fade outs added to each sample. YT hoses up the sound quite a bit but even through their compression system, you can still hear the difference this new audio amp board makes.

There are a few issues with it as has recently been discovered originally by me while making this video that have been replicated on others. So the purchase of these boards might go on pause for a bit until those minor issues are figured out. In the meantime...if you thought the model 1 Genesis already had excellent sound (And it does compared to the other later models), then you are in for a treat.

    Enjoy !

  8. Goodness that thing is a behemoth!!

It is about the same size as the JVC s700 it replaced. It is a tiny bit taller, but the same width, and not as deep as the old JVC was. Plus it can take virtually any input you could want that is analog and upscales to whatever resolution you want from 640x480 up to 1080p at different refresh rates. So..yeah there is a lot of hardware under there to make that possible LOL!

So versatile though and it only set me back $45 shipped! Course I've spent another $30 in cabling for it but I can live with that with everything it can do.

Guess that means I need to put my JVC s700 up for sale now...hmmm...

  9. I completely agree with Chas10e.  It's great for a lot of the games.  Space Invaders, Galaxian, Super Breakout too.  It just feels so much higher quality than the stock joysticks.  What I don't like is how freakin' big they made it.  Just like the 5200.  So big for no good reason.

I always imagine Atari releasing a much more compact 5200 with improved controllers.  That would have been awesome.

Seems to me that Intellivision should have also improved their controller over time.  Like when the INTV 2 was released.  Such a wasted opportunity.

I believe part of the reason the 5200 trak-ball controller is so large was to make it sturdier when using it as compared to the 2600 trak-ball controllers. I also like the fact that the trak-ball in the 5200 controller is just a standard cue ball so you could replace it with any other billiard ball if you so wanted.

With the intellivision controllers, I never understood why they went backwards with the model 2 in that regard? The Intelly 2 controllers are just so hard on the hands and the buttons are ridiculous. The best controller I've found to use with the Intellivision is my modded flashback controllers I have. They work better than the original 2609 model controllers. I've also used one of the controllers that has the Stickler installed and I thought was pretty darn good as well. Though I could see in some games that use the intelly disc more for movement where that wouldn't be the best. Still for quite a few games I thought the sticklers were great.

  10. This is small series of videos I took freehand with my camcorder during a complete audio/video upgrade of the game room. It is in three parts and doesn't have any real editing, title cards or anything. Still I thought it might interest some people to know how I have everything connected up in my game room and how it all operates and what it looks like.

Here is part 1 where I go over the equipment that will be used for everything.

Part 2 goes into more detail about the cabling I will need to use the Extron 7SC for various connection types.

And with part 3 I show everything in place and how it all works and looks.

  11. Whoa... I finally own a valuable piece of gaming history. I feel incredibly lucky, and I plan to hold onto mine. I only wish I had managed to get the pack of extra controller overlays.

EDIT: I finally hit 1,000 posts!

    Umm..

You can still order the extra overlays from intellivision productions. I just received mine last month so...yeah these are back in stock and I'd suggest getting them while you can?

    https://intellivision-productions-inc.myshopify.com/products/missing-overlay-pack-for-intellivision-flashback

I too would be interested in some more games for my intelly collection, but I'm getting to the point where I need to really expensive ones now and with my LTO I've just not had much motivation to go after those rarer titles LOL!

  12. In reading what you said at the beginning, it almost seems like the lower resolutions of the older consoles aren't being supported by the capture. You stated the PS1 startup is fine, and then nothing. that is because the PS1 startup screen is in 640x480 I believe while most of the actual games ran at lower resolution than that. It would also explain why other games on composite give you issues because their resolution is too low for the capture device to support.

Might have to get a separate upscaler that takes the composite, s-video..etc and brings it up to 720p or at east scales to 640x480 to see if makes a difference?

I'm just guessing here as I've not worked with many capture devices myself, and the ones I did were only having to capture VGA or HDMI signals. In fact, the only issue we had with HDMI was that we had to use a "special" device from china to disable the HDCP encryption from the HDMI to that it could be captured and re-broadcast to multiple displays all at once.

  13. I believe the main issue with JPN games is just the difference in the pinouts and PCB boards that were used initially. But yes you can use any of the other regions just fine in most cases. Although there are a few games that were setup for 50hz PAL mode that will play too fast on the US versions. But I don't know which titles that would be. I do know the Sonic games work just fine as does Master of Darkness, but the pricing on these lately has started to climb into ranges I'm not okay with paying for just yet.

  14. I love the FM synthesis of the Genesis and it is quite amazing the tricks you can do with FM over wavetable PCM. But when it does come to midi modules, I'm a Roland guy all the way. BTW the still as yet to be released 7800 XM add-on device will contain an on board pokey in addition to a yamaha FM synth to add such capability to future 7800 home brew releases.

  15. Awesome! I was going to say that if it did end up being a dead RF modulator that I actually have an RF modulator for an SMS that I removed last month when modding a client's SMS for them. They specifically asked that I remove the RF modulator and put the region switch in the hole the RF modulator was so I wouldn't have to drill any holes in the case.

Region switch was for Tim's RF add-in mod board. Which, is why the SMS was sent to me.

  16. The JVC I have has component as well but it can't handle anything over 480i. It can't do anything with progressive signals. Sort of a dummied down component. Its there but given its limitations its not any different than s-video that I can tell.

What model component switcher is it? Is it powered? I don't have component on mine as it is strictly composite and s-video only. I'd like to get the s900 as that is everything the 700 is plus component as well I believe. There is also the s777 but it too is composite and s-video only, but it does a few more inputs and an output for nearly each input?! Not sure why unless that model was designed for use with early video walls and such.

I've got an OSSC to mess with now and while the SNES, Saturn, and Genesis looked fantastic on it, I've got some off ghosting affects from the DC through VGA on it, almost like a voltage drop in the video signal. Still it looks great so I can more or less live it for now.

  17. Yes but this cart should sound basically the same on all models. Mine is obviously modded quite a bit and will be modded further in the weeks to come on the audio. But basically it will sound just like this and as far as has been tested, it seems to work on all Genesis models just fine. I was secretly hoping when they teased a pic earlier this week of the 8x8 matrix LED panel that they were making a volume 2 (As there were quite a few more songs than what could be fit onto the cart), or perhaps it was hinting to a YM2018. But no...

Still a second release of the YM2017 is excellent as there were only 85 in the original run of carts and I'm not sure how many there will be this time.

  18. I should also note...that getting the true FM upgrade board is the way to go for the best FM sound out of an SMS. I do wish it were stereo, but it is what it is. The MegaED X7 has a newer firmware release that adds FM sound support to the SMS games through a Genesis. But it doesn't sound nearly as good as the real deal. Still if you have an X7 it is a good way to go and again for the price of the FM board with shipping from AUS and the costs for the games that support it, it does start to justify the cost of the X7 MegaED cart?! LOL

Oh... the SMS version of Rampage is pretty good and supports the FM board as well. Then you also have to pick up Golvelius and Wonder Boy Dragon's Trap if you can.

  19. I was a 1st chair trumpet player for 6 years throughout middle school and high school. But sadly I never touched it after I graduate. I still have it as I found out pretty quickly that the price my step-dad paid for it was quite the bargain.

My trumpet is a silver Benge ML made in the latter portion of 1974. In fact I pulled it out recently from its case to see how badly tarnished it might be. Wasn't too bad but there are some pretty dark spots on the bell. I'm thinking seriously of getting it professionally polished and small dent in the flare of the bell straighten back out. I don't have any current pics of it but I did register it on this website (#16674) when I found out about how cool and awesome Benge trumpets are. My band directors always preferred to use my horn when demonstrating something to the class even when their own was sitting right next to them. I later found out it was because of how bright and directional the Benge horns are.

  20. I'd be happy with standard composite outs as long as the system works. Unfortunately, the Genesis I won off a Goodwill auction was suppose to come with an adapter but it wasn't included and many contact attempts ended with no return contacts and no adapter. In that case I can use my 5200's power supply which I have used with a cable I made to reverse polarity on my Genesis. So it looks like I will be ready to go once it gets here.

    Thanks CrossBow!

If you don't have a composite av out cable for a model 1 Genesis/SMS then you can get them here pretty cheaply. I actually just purchased one of these cable last month and a new DIN connector so I could cut the original connector off and rewire it for use with my TI, Vic-20, and 800xl/130XE systems.

On the sound upgrade, this will really depend on how much you actually plan to play the SMS. Remember that not all the SMS games have FM sound and some of the key titles had the FM removed when they were brought over stateside. I say this because the FM board from Tim plus the shipping will set you back quite a bit. But the FM board is crazy easy to install with the most difficult part being the installation of the 3-way toggle switch and where you want to put it.
