I remember those, but have never owned one.  I think they are totally awesome!  If they make new ones, I'll be all over that.

I have a meager collection of the old Mattel Electronics handheld games.  Basketball, baseball, football, etc. 

How many members here own one or all of the Coleco Tabletop Games?

It is similar to the NES controller.  I'm sure Atari used the NES controller as inspiration for this.  On the inside, it looks almost exactly like the NES controller...rubber boots with the metallic dot.  I'm not sure why the buttons feel squishier than the NES...maybe the placement as you mentioned. 
 
It is a good controller, but not really worth what they cost on Ebay these days due to rarity. 

Does anyone else have one of these?  Apparently, they came with the European version of the 7800.  I got this one from Ebay a few years ago, but it was broken.  I finally opened it up this weekend, and it turned out to be a bad wire.  I had a standard 7800 controller with a broken shaft...so grabbed the wire out of that one and transplanted it into the gamepad.  It involved some cutting and soldering.  The standard controller uses slide on clips for the wires, but the gamepad uses soldered connections.  Gamepad wiring was really cheap -- low gauge. 
 
Now it works perfectly, and I'll say, it's a big improvement over the standard controller.  It's a shame these weren't standard in the USA.  I've heard bad comments about the gamepad, but it works really well if you ask me.  Buttons are a little squishy, but no big deal.

It is a good controller. But, for me, it can be somewhat unbecoming at times. It depends on the game. I use it anyway. I think it is the combination of joystick and joypad that can be confusing, at least for me. But, it has its pros and cons as anything would. No doubt. Personally, I like it overall. It just needs a few minor tweaks, but it does a good job.

Here's another good one. This time a little later, Summer 2001. Notice the Sega Dreamcast Sega Sports bundle, the Nintendo 64 controllers, the PS2 systems in the blue boxes and the Gran Turismo 3 bundle in the red, the silver-boxed PSone systems, and the GameBoy Advances.

In high school, I applied for a summer job at Kay Bee.  I ended up making the last cut, but they ended up hiring a really pretty girl from my school instead.  DANG IT!  I can't blame them. 

I also remember that Kay Bee was THE place to get the bargain bin games after the crash in 1983.  ET, Krull, and a bunch of other games I got from there were only $2. 

Thinking back to good times at Kay-Bee Toy Stores in the mall. My first Atari came from Sears, but almost every game I ever bought for Atari, Nintendo, all the way up through Dreamcast, most often came from Kay-Bee in our local mall. I just learned that Commodore made a speech module for the VIC-20 and C64 called "Magic Voice" that used the same chip/design as the Speak and Spell.  I guess the Scott Adams adventure games used it, as well as others like Gorf. 

I've been keeping my eyes open for a reasonably priced TurboGrafx 16, but so far, it's eluded me.  They are pretty hard to find. 

@RickR, we'll be giving one away in a trivia contest soon. I noticed you're pretty good at those.

I have a turbo grafx-16. I love it. It's a weird system. I like that it's weird! In some ways its amazing and in other ways it doesn't make sense. When it came out in the USA it was such an obvious step forward from the NES. Yet it doesn't make sense to me that they made it so big when the PC Engine was so tiny. How cool! It doesn't make sense to me that for all of the great games they had in Japan, they didn't translate well into games for the USA. Kato and Ken is a good example. Then the Genesis happened. The turbo grafx, the duo, and the express were all awesome. I wish I had a larger collection.
