I actually love the color palette.  Much better in person. It's very cool in the context of the overall package - music, gameplay, effects. Everything just works. It is also feels fresh compared to the other titles.

I know this is available on other platforms but this is a game I would want to save for just the Atari VCS. I know they would do it right.

      Sabertooth

I hear the happiest control of the PS5 version is pretty cool. Otherwise, VCS is probably the way to play.

Once Atari turns on the back end for the global leaderboards it will be at parity with other platforms, with bonus content.

      I didn't know you were a stop-motion animator, Sabertooth. Pretty cool. :O)

Beautiful work @Sabertooth! That graphic is top shelf, thank you for getting the word out :atari_2600:

  5. Does anyone else think the in-game color scheme used in Atari's new Breakout: Recharged has a vaguely Jinks vibe?!

      Justin

I didn't pick up on that until you pointed it out but I see it. I don't know if Atari has the rights to Jinks, but that game has a lot of potential if they can make it right. "A Paddle Platformer" where the paddle is like Mario, moving through a side-scrolling world with endless beautiful levels to explore. Admittedly, 7800 Jinks is unique in some ways and lacking in others. Maybe Jinks: Recharged could fulfill this side scrolling paddle potential

Very much so.  Now that you've pointed it out, that's all I see!

  7. Another interesting article about the new post-Chesnais iteration of Atari. The 50th year of the brand could be a pivotal one.

Even though Wade J. Rosen is the new CEO, I am not yet holding my breath. I don't know what he is like, compared to Chesnais. It could be pivotal, but I still have my doubts.

    1. MaximumRD

      MaximumRD

So sad, he just recently tweeted being on the road doing stand-up on tour and feeling young again, had a long list of dates set up. So sad. RIP 😔

  8. Interesting interview with current-day Atari's new CEO, Wade Rosen, on the current direction of the company. The Recharged titles have been solid, a new Food Fight is on its way, and Fred is no longer with the Co. Maybe he is the leader to right the ship?

I am happy Frederic Chesnais left the Atari company. He didn't seem with it to me. Maybe, this Rosen guy has some smarts when it comes to games and gaming. :O)

  9. When I saw the recent homebrew drop at AtariAge this morning my wallet screamed and slid itself under the couch...

Ordered Gravitic Mines for the Jaguar and Knight Guy in Low-Res World for the 7800.  I was tempted to order some others but need to check my games spending after the holidays.

    2. Justin

      Justin

7800 guy here, checking in. Knight Guy looks fantastic. Shows that every bit of a classic NES game can be done nicely on the 7800 with some effort.

    3. Sabertooth

      Sabertooth

100 percent @Justin ! There was a lot more potential in the 7800 than we ever got from Atari. It's great to see some homebrew games proving this today!

  10. Currently playing IS3 on the PSOne. I was a huge fan of the Jaguar games and this takes everything developers Eclipse Software learned on the two earlier titles and cranks it to 11. Like IS2, it's a bit on the hard side but still very enjoyable. IS3 was also on the Nuon.

Any fans of this or the other IS games?

      RickR

Oh that's awesome.  I've been having fun with the few minutes I have had with Jaguar IS.  To know there's an even better version on PS is good to know.  I'll have to look for that one.

I was a HUGE fan of PC MechWarrior back in the day.  The mech games are a lot of fun.

    2. Sabertooth

      Sabertooth

The PSOne version is easier/more enjoyable to control than the Jaguar version. But it is harder overall. I really like the series and rank it just behind Armored Core. It's a slower type of combat but lots of fun.

If you ever get the PSOne version, be sure to use a CRT. The textures look stunning on a CRT but super muddy on a HDTV - even through an upscale. The Jaguar games look great on both since they are mostly flat shaded polygons with some bitmaps textures.

    3. Atari 5200 Guy

      Atari 5200 Guy

Loved IS on Jaguar, missed IS2, never knew IS3 was released on the PSOne.  Like @RickRsaid... I'll have to look for it.

  11. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of the great members and mods at atari.io!

I hope that you all have a safe and happy holiday filled with light, love and laughter... oh, and some Atari games!

THANK YOU @Sabertooth!! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all ❄️

  12. Woe to any person that finds one of these under the tree this Christmas!

Cute, cuddly and with a voracious appetite for mischief, the Gremlins wreak havoc in this 1986 Atari 5200 movie tie-in title. Notably, Gremlins was the last official game released for Atari's ill-fated console.

You're getting me sold on the Atari VCS

  15. I've finally completed all challenges in single player mode for Black Widow Recharged on the Atari VCS! It was probably the most satisfying gaming achievement of 2021 for me.

The VCS version has 40 challenges, compared to 30 in other versions of the game. The 10 VCS exclusive challenges were among the most difficult in the game. There were definitely some controller throwing moments!

What were your most satisfying gaming victories of 2021?!

Getting an Atari Jaguar has been the most satisfying gaming victory of 2021 for me.

Also being a part of the AtariAge Facebook 2600 Weekly High Score club has been a ton of fun.

And I'm mere millimeters away from completing Phoenix Wright 2 on DS.

  16.  My thoughts on Black Widow: Recharged for the VCS.

  17. There's nothing quite like crushing adorable Sno-Bees and their unhatched eggs on a Sunday morning. 🌅🌄🥚🍳

  18. PSA: The new Atari VCS is on sale at Microcenter for $249. This in-store only promotion nets you the Black Walnut All-In edition. Retailers elsewhere remain at full price ($399).

If you're curious or need a new mini-PC and live near a Microcenter, now could be a good time.

Someone also posted a tutorial on how to install macOS natively on an Atari VCS. He calls himself Middleman. It seems interesting, but a little technical for me to do. But then, I don't own a VCS, but maybe I might in the future. I don't know. But, it's neat. :O)

    3. Sabertooth

      Sabertooth

Prices at Microcenter are back up to $399 but (anecdotally) they sold quite a few. Many locations are sold out. $249 seems to be a sweet spot pricewise for the VCS.

Game Stop is now running a promotion for $279 for the All-In Onyx edition - which is their tribute to the Vader.

    4. DegasElite

      DegasElite

That's still a great price for the VCS, considering it's normally close to $400.00 average retail value. Interesting.

  19. One of the more exciting developments for the new VCS has been the release of 7800 classics each Friday for $2.99.  This week it was Food Fight!

No matter how you play it, Food Fight is a classic!

  20. Added a new CRT to the collection today. This is the first time I've unlocked the secret cat screen in Phoenix! 😂🤣🕹️

  21. I just realized that the building I spent five years of my career in was a stand-in for Caprica in the original Battlestar Galactica. My mind is blown!

Too bad it's being demolished as this is typed.

@Justin, spot on with that Defender cover! Someone in Atari's art department was a BSG fan!

  22. My GF surprised by me with these socks for Halloween. I couldn't help but think of the @Atari Creep

Happy Halloween everyone! Atari.io is the best forum on the net. As the Creep might say: Creep it real!

  23. The Atari VCS version of Centipede Recharged has 10 exclusive Challenges. They are much harder than the first 30 and have some nice references to the classic sprites. I've got one left to clear!

Thanks, Justin! I appreciate it. At the time of the blog I hadn't yet unlocked the VCS Challenges. They were really difficult. I may try a video review (my first) but work has been insane of late!
