  1. I never really liked Mario 64 and I think it's because of Cybermorph. I'm not arguing that Mario 64 is a bad game. I understand, clinically, that it's a terrific game because the majority says so. But it never did much to excite me. It's made the top of "Best Video Games Ever" lists, both today and back when it was new. It bores me. And I remain unmoved.

    Part of the reason for this may be because I've always viewed "Mario games" from Donkey Kong onward as 2-D platformers. It felt like an odd choice to place Mario in a 3-D environment, much in the same way that it felt like an odd choice to make a dark, live-action Mario movie with Bob Hoskins as Mario and Dennis Hopper as King Koopa. I saw Mario 64's 3-D world as a gimmick or a party trick intended to showcase Nintendo's new hardware. I can't blame them for that choice, but I feel the same now as I did then that I would've enjoyed a N64 Mario game with really beautiful 2-D graphics, as opposed to the 3-D environment we were given. Super Mario Bros. U is a more contemporary example of this idea. I'm not here to throw shade at Mario 64. It's interesting to me that I was mostly alone in my ambivalence toward this game and am now realizing why. I like Nintendo 64. I thought GoldenEye was an incredible game when it first came out and view it as a must-have classic today. But Mario 64 to me is like Combat on the Atari 2600. It's a donor cart.

    Ultimately though, I blame Cybermorph for my Mario 64 boredom. Skylar did Mario in. I'm just coming to this realization tonight. Mario running around in circles collecting coins bored me TO DEATH. Maybe because by the time Mario 64 was released I had already been running around 3-D worlds collecting gold pods in Cybermorph. I was graduating into my 4th year of this 3-D nonsense when the rest of the normie-world experienced it for the first time with Mario 64. So I understand their reaction. I had long lost my 3-D virginity by then and Mario 64 couldn't excite me. Blast you, Skylar!

    I was one of the fortunate few who had the Jaguar in November, 1993 before most anyone else outside of Atari had laid their paws on it. I really enjoyed Cybermorph when it first came out. It was a different kind of game and felt like a more mature step up from what I was playing on SNES and Genesis. It's also the first game I ever had with a fully-realized 3-D world where we could fly anywhere and do anything. Going from 16-Bit 2-D games into a 3-D landscape like Cybermorph, you could see how that would be really, really attractive. We could not have games like Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid and Mario 64 without games like Cybermorph. You have to start somewhere. 

  2. How cool. I've run into similar scores in years passed. I always thought of them like finding cave paintings or hieroglyphics. In 1994 when I was new to collecting I bought a used Atari 5200 with a few CIB games at a flea market. The game that stands out most in my mind was Centipede. If you look inside the manual for 5200 Centipede there is a blank page or two in the back with lines for jotting down your high scores. They had filled up most of that booklet with their high scores and dates from 1984. I thought that was a cool find. Once I got deeper into the hobby I found that wasn't entirely uncommon but I still think it's cool finding them. Maybe one day we'll have some sort of a High Score Challenge to beat ancient scores we've found written inside boxes and manuals.

    It's not required that you cycle through. But staying with only a single generated course for the duration of the Squad Challenge would mean not powering off for two weeks. Choose the strategy that suits you best. Good luck!

    Squad Challenge ends 11:59 pm PST December 31st, 2018

     

     

    Objective: Play for the best possible time using the difficulty settings defined in the challenge. Post a photo or video of your score in this thread. Scores must be achieved between December 15th through December 31st, 2018. Screen captures are not allowed as they are easily manipulated for falsified scores. Multiple submissions are permitted. The player with the best time at the end of the competition is the victor!

     

    Eligibility: Anyone can join in. All players are welcome!

     

    Play Rules: Games may be played on real hardware or emulation, using any controller or keyboard, following rules and game settings as delineated in the Squad Challenge. Enhancements and hacked versions of this game are not allowed.

     

    Difficulty Level: Game 4 "Flying Ace", Difficulty Switches set to B. We are playing for the best overall time to complete the course. Set both difficulty switches to B to begin. Select Game 4. These are the most challenging difficulty settings and provide for flying through 25 barns, and a new course each time you select Game 4.

     

    Fair Play: Players should play fairly, be honest, and have fun! Falsified scores will result in your immediate removal from the site. It goes without saying that no use of cheats, hacks, cartridge frying, enhancements, Photoshop, subterfuge, or any other unfair advantage is allowed. Everybody hates a cheater.

  6. :pole_position_blimp_big: Congratulations Kid A!

     

    WOW!! I'm truly thrilled to see this kind of turnout and enthusiasm for our first Super Nintendo Squad Challenge! Congrats to all our racers who showed up to play, F-ZERO was so much fun! Lots of friendly competition all around this challenge, this is really the sort of thing that fuels my passion for classic gaming deep down. I love that there was a real battle for a high score and yet you guys were all drawing maps and sharing different strategies. Kid A and Atari Creep have been live streaming these events on Instagram lately and it's been really cool to get to watch other people here play. I always find myself playing F-ZERO around this time of year, we may revisit F-ZERO in a future Squad Challenge racing a different track. Congratulations to Kid A on his score! It was great watching Kid A and RadioPoultry battle it out and launch this game into the stratosphere. Lots of "nerd cred" to go around this challenge! Kid A came in with a score of 2'01"59 and RadioPoultry was right on his tail at 2'01"70. I have a feeling this may continue back and forth in the Scoreboard and both of these players will break the 1 minute mark. I posted a time of 2'11"90, our newcomer Lauren Tyler posted 2'15"82, nosweargamer posted 2'15"90 and RickR rounds things out with an impressive 2'19"55. All of you showed how it was done, a huge congratulations to everybody who turned out for this Squad Challenge and posting absolutely incredible scores! And once again a very special welcome to our new member Lauren Tyler who jumped right into High Score Squad and played along! Welcome Lauren! Congrats to everyone who played! I'd encourage Kid A to post his new high score on the Scoreboard, and maybe this Challenge can continue on! I hope everybody enjoyed changing it up with SNES, we'll have more 16-Bit Challenges coming up very soon and throughout the year with Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, Atari Lynx and more. Way to go everybody!

  8. 2019 will be be about inviting other classic gamers from Atari Age, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook groups who fit our community to join Atari I/O. Everybody is welcome here. If you've made friends in other communities, arcades, classic gaming shops, Facebook, your kickball team, wherever, and you enjoy talking retro gaming with them and think they'd get along great here, go ahead and invite them in. The Forums are far enough along now to accept new members, and we'll have some fun events coming up this year. Go ahead and invite a few people to check out the forums or join us in the chat if you think it's something they'd enjoy 💥💥💥

    right now its set for everyday all day. when you start with the Wednesday chat thing I can edit them.
    as mentioned in chat before, the yahoo groups don't send out reminder like before so I got a monthly newsletter being e-mailed out to them.

    Thank you Dan! We've already begun doing Wednesday Night Atari Chat again as a regular thing, though I haven't been pushing it hard on Instagram or elsewhere until January. Go ahead and put "Wednesday nights" in your calendar 🙌 There's no particular set time since people will be streaming in and out all evening across multiple time zones, so a good rule of thumb to remember is that chat's open 24/7 and Wednesday Night Atari Chat will get hopping when it gets dark in the east and wrap up when everyone has gone to bed in the west. Generally before/after dinner until bed time. Thank you for getting the word out.
