It is the best classic baseball game imo. The speech is cool. And the batting uses the analog stick to great effect. It is awesome.

Great take Rick, I never knew that. Almost 20 years ago when this website had a store, one of the items that never sold was RealSports Baseball for Atari 7800. For whatever reason it had a bad rap. I thought it was 5200 RealSports Baseball with stepped up graphics and gameplay, so if the 7800 version wasn't great the 5200 version wouldn't be either. I never gave sports games enough play, or the 5200 for that matter, but I'll have to pull that game out and give it another try. Your recommendation goes a long way around here. Thanks!

  2. Wow @atarilbc I genuinely love this. What a stunning setup. This is exactly what I love to see and what I wish I had in my home. This looks like a great space to entertain in. You're able to invite people over and they aren't vaulted in by shelves of games and toys. It's the perfect Atari Day setup for a 4-Player game of Warlords! Everything wired nicely and game systems easily accessible whenever you want to power up and play. I love the mid-century modern furniture with the glass of wine. The credenza, glass table, the rug and coasters, that all sets the right vibe. And that view of the skyline outside Wow, just perfect. What a great space to entertain people. I'd love to see this when you have people over.

Justin...ever thought about picking a single game and allowing all Atari, Coleco, and Intellivision versions to count?  Something to consider.

Yes I have, that's what Atari Cup Tournament is. We'll be playing in teams: Seattle Super Marios, Oakland Star Raiders, Washington Warlords, Detroit Defender, etc. each with their own individual private Clubs in the forums. It's been sitting here ready to go but we need a few more people to join to make it viable. Maybe later in the year. Right now I want to get High Score Squad sizzling again and Wednesday Night Atari Chat too. Lots of fun things to come!

I'm actually content with the 5200 games I have.  I managed to get the games I had plus a few I never had before.  There are a few I'm still after but I'm in no hurry to obtain them.

What Atari 5200 games do you have?

OK.  Gotta have one now!  On my wishlist.  I'll take either a PCE or American TG.  No longer matters.  Might be easier to get a PCE though.

Might be! I want to have both. In my mind they represent two very different things.

  5. I’m thrilled to see so much interest in the TurboGrafx-16 since we held our Devil’s Crush Squad Challenge recently! A Turbo EverDrive is a must-have accessory if you’re just getting started with a TurboGrafx system. Below is a list of the best games to start out with.

You can pick up a Turbo EverDrive for sale at Stone Age Gamer. Here is the Turbo EverDrive with the same configuration as the one I bought. If you have a TurboGrafx system of any kind, I highly recommend getting your hands on one of these:

    https://stoneagegamer.com/turbo-everdrive-black.html

The Turbo EverDrive supports American and Japanese HuCard (TurboChip) games for TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine, but does not support CD games. Many of the Super CD games in particular were sooo good. Having an EverDrive made me step aside from the Super CDs and appreciate all of the good HuCard games released for TurboGrafx-16.

@btbfilms76 and @MaximumRD also have Turbo EverDrives and might be able to offer some good recommendations of games they think would be best to start out with. I've been talking TurboGrafx with them for years and they always have good insights.

PS - thank you for all the info Rob.  To be honest, I think I'm just going to stick with RF.  It's tempting to make a cable myself or buy the one you linked from ebay...but I have no desire to take any risks with this console.  I paid a pretty high price for it.  And the RF signal is excellent.  And all of my gaming TV's have the RF in.

@RickR there's no need to take any risks with your console by modding it or making a cable. All you need is a TurboBooster Plus. I highly recommend these! The TurboBooster Plus gives you A/V RCA out plus Memory Backup. This is an official NEC TurboGrafx product. I bought one of these from Toys R Us and have used it with my TurboGrafx-16 ever since the system was new!

It's a nifty little expansion module that attaches to the back where the plastic cover would go. The TurboBooster Plus adds composite video and stereo audio RCA ports to the TurboGrafx-16, so you don't need to make your own. Additionally, it adds onboard memory for the "Game Save" feature that is built into the TurboDuo. You can save your games and scores to the TurboBooster Plus and not have to enter codes.

I don't really get the plastic piece that snaps on the back.

This is easily explained. The square base at the back of the TurboGrafx-16 is a vestigial footprint of the Japanese PC Engine. (See photos below) The TurboGrafx-16 retained the PC Engine footprint at the expansion port so the American systems could be compatible with the TurboGrafx-CD and other potential future add-ons without a tremendous amount of redesign or retooling from their Japanese counterparts.

PC Engine, more than most video game brands, had all sorts of different variants and peripherals that were released in Japan. It's unbelievable the different PC Engine items that were available in the Japanese market. I'm sure the the thinking at the time the TurboGrafx-16 was designed was that Americanized versions of many of these items would be released in the US, and keeping the expansion port area on the TG16 similar to the PC Engine would make it much easier to create American versions of these add-ons.  (So why redesign the PC Engine into the TurboGrafx-16 in the first place?)

    maxresdefault-5.jpg

    image-1.jpg

    2906429978_d0cafd7baa.jpg

The plastic piece was added to the TurboGrafx-16 to maintain the design aesthetics of the console while serving as a protective cover for the expansion pinouts. Not only does this keep dust out but it protects the tiny brittle pins at the back which could easily bend or break if bumped against something unprotected.

Imagine buying a TurboGrafx (nearly twice the price of an NES at its release) for your 2nd grader. His friend comes over to play and bangs a Hot Wheel into the back pins, or the system gets pushed into an AC Adapter and even just one pin is bent or broken. Would anybody even notice it right away? Then shelling out another $400 in 1990 dollars for the TurboGrafx-CD add on only to realize it won't connect to your system and won't play. Because a pin got bent. It's probably a good idea to include a hard plastic cover at the back to protect those pins while also maintaining the sleek looks of the video game system.

The protective cover at the back was part of their design initiative to "beef up" the PC Engine for an American audience which they had perceived as being more rough. It was the same reason why they substantially beefed up the PC Engine controller port to the larger American version. The changes in the PC Engine design in becoming the TurboGrafx-16 and the reasons for them is a rabbit hole that we could go down endlessly. I've felt for a long time that they should have released the PC Engine in America keeping the PC Engine design, but updated with black plastic and the neon TurboGrafx-16 branding. Why redesign that high tech little unit to be 3x the size it needed to be? Then there would be no need for a clunky plastic piece at the back.

LOOK at what came in the mail today!  I already had the microSD card.

@RickR now that you've had your TurboGrafx-16 and EverDrive for a little more than a week, I'm curious to hear what your overall impressions are on this system so far?

In America they were known as Donruss. Some viewed Donruss as cooler and more modern than Topps and Fleer in the late 80s. They were called Leaf in Canada, but I did spot some Leaf cards in Michigan growing up, since we did border Canada.

That's a great bit of knowledge Phil. I was growing up in Rochester at the time, we went over to Windsor fairly regularly. I remember how we'd go shopping in Ontario and Nintendo systems would have the Mattel logo on it which always confused me when I was young. I've heard of Donruss but Leaf wasn't on my radar. Makes much more sense knowing "Leaf" was a Canadian brand 🇨🇦🇺🇸

I don't know much about Baseball cards but I was very into collecting ghtem in the mid 1980s. You've given me something to look into.

Message: Welcome to our 52nd Squad Challenge! To celebrate our 52nd Squad Challenge we are playing our first 5200 Squad Challenge! Centipede is an absolute icon. It became one of the most fun and most well known games Atari every produced, both in the arcade and at home. Atari produced versions of Centipede for every video game system and home computer they produced through the end of the decade, and even the Lynx had a version of Centipede in development. Centipede is possibly one of the best reasons to own an Atari 5200, with nice graphics and stellar gameplay, and a great reason to pull out the "Dan Kramer special" Atari 5200 Trak-Ball controller. A very special WELCOME to all Atari 5200 players joining us for this Squad Challenge! I hope you have a lot of fun with this challenge and get in some good scores! PDF Centipede Instruction Booklet is attached below. Good luck!

  11. :pole_position_blimp_big: Congratulations Everyone!

PLINK PLINK PLINK!! Congratulations everyone on a great game! This was only our second TurboGrafx-16 Squad Challenge, our first Sega Genesis Challenge and our first Double Feature, and this turned out tremendously well! To see this level of participation and enthusiasm is extremely encouraging! I'm pleased to see so many of you jump in and take part in this challenge, and I'm absolutely thrilled to see RickR become a TurboGrafx-16 owner and get his hands on a Turbo EverDrive. A few others have been talking about this in the chat as well. That's what these Squad Challenges are all about! I hope in some way this challenge and the forums in general encouraged Rick to give TurboGrafx-16 a try.

:wreck-it-ralph: I want to welcome new member @waKKo TV to the forums who participated in this challenge and posted a really respectable score of 7,758,700. Welcome to the forums wakko, it's great to have you here! I hope you had fun playing Devil's Crush and will join us again for High Score Squad again in the future!

I posted a score of 107,287,300 playing Devil's Crush on TurboDuo. Atari Creep had a super strong showing with 22,237,100 points achieved on Sega Genesis. Kamakazi20012 and btbfilms76 were right on his tail with 12,516,100 and 12,251,000 respectively. RickR, TrekMD and waKKo TV round out the challenge with their very best! All of you showed how it was done, a huge congratulations to everybody who turned out for this Squad Challenge and posted absolutely incredible scores!

I hope everybody had fun with this game! I love pinball and think this is one of the best pinball video games of all time and it looks like some of you agree! I'll be opening Devil's Crush up in the Scoreboard, I'd love to continue this challenge there over the coming years and see how far we can take this game!

2019 will be changing it up in High Score Squad with new challenges for Lynx, SNES, Genesis, Master System, Atari ST, Jaguar, 5200, TurboGrafx-16, Intellivision, ColecoVision, and much much more, in addition to the usual lineup of video game systems. We may even have an Arcade challenge! Be ready to play all of these game systems, we'll be breaking new ground with more interesting Squad Challenges coming up very soon and throughout the year, and we hope to see you there. Way to go everybody!

I just want to say thanks for picking this game.  I'd never played it before this challenge.  I now I consider it the best video pinball game I've ever played.

And now I realize how advanced the TG-16 really was.  It's version is better than the Genesis version.  I'm going to see if there are other games these two systems have in common to compare.

You're welcome @RickR ☺️ This is the entire idea of having Squad Challenges, not just to flex nerd cred but to inspire us to explore different video game systems and experience new games that we may come to enjoy for years to come.

  13. This isn't my High Score but I'm posting this anyway. I'm really proud of this score. My previous score was 107,287,300, but that was with a 100,000,000 special points bonus that I'm still not sure how I attained. Basically 7,287,300 plus that bonus. The score I'm sharing today is 78,946,500 was achieved without any hitting any substantial bonuses. I just played through a fairly uneventful but long game and came out with this score. You may have watched me get this score live on Instagram. Felt good about this and wanted to share with you guys.

Have you tried any Champ Games or Spiceware games???

Yes! Those are Top Shelf games @Arenafoot. Absolutely some of the best. Happy and Scramble for Atari 2600 by Champ Games are incredible. If I didn't know any better I'd think those were ColecoVision games, the graphics and gameplay are so well done. I also like Medieval Mayhem and Draconian for Atari 2600 by Spiceware. I'm a big Warlords fan and it's nice to see someone give it the 2600 version it deserves.

  15. How awesome is @Atari Creep ? That was super generous of him. Gotta love those original TRU stickers too, that brings back some memories. I like the Beetle Bailey! He's one of those things that's been around for 75 years and everybody knows but is still kinda niche and hasn't gotten swept up in the corporate blockbuster comics yet. Those Riders of the Silver Screen collector cards are pretty neat too. Nice to see some different stuff in the mix here. Very cool, Atari Creep. Thanks for another site shoutout @nosweargamer !

  16. No disrespect meant to anyone else's work but Halo 2600 may be the greatest Atari 2600 homebrew ever made. That would have done so well had it been released in 1982. I'll also place Thrust+ Platinum by Thomas Jentszch up there along with Juno First for 2600 by Chris Walton. Lots of great people out there doing amazing things on these old game systems. Halo may be the one that I give the most play.
