MORE TROUBLE WITH COLECO CHAMELEON SURFACES, REVISIONIST HISTORY SPOTTED

    http://retrogamingmagazine.com/2015/12/23/more-trouble-with-coleco-chameleon-surfaces-revisionist-history-spotted/

As detailed in the article MIKE already seems to be back tracking and tipping over what he is saying from one moment to the next so it is tough to give him the benefit of a doubt, I just do not think he is up to accomplishing this...

  2. Well, I am (shocker) still skeptical BUT with that said HERE is a post MIKE KENNEDY just made in the Coleco Chameleon thread over on Atariage I thought worth sharing for all of you following -

    Hello Everyone.

It is the end of a very tumultuous year for me and in the spirit of Christmas and the holidays I wanted to come in here and ask those of you who will listen to let the past be the past as it relates to this (ad)venture.  RETRO VGS is the past and COLECO Chameleon is the future.  The Chameleon is not just a rebranded Retro VGS.  Despite sharing some of the same internal components the hardware has been completely redesigned to lower the cost while maintaining much of its ability to play a wide variety of games in a variety of ways.  To boil this all down to its essence we just want to produce a product that is different, affordable and will bring joy to people’s lives.  The market will ultimately decide if we are crazy enough to believe a cartridge console can stand its ground in this age of digital delivery.  There are clearly lots of people on both sides of this fence and ultimately it will all come down to the games that can be played and if they are compelling enough to vie for peoples hard earned money.

The COLECO branding was a business decision I made to bring instant brand recognition to the Chameleon.  But I did not enter into this licensing agreement lightly, knowing that if done so, we have a lot to live up to.  COLECO made some very influential, high quality and fun video gaming and electronic products during their time and we will try endlessly to carry on that tradition with the Chameleon.  The recognition of having the COLECO logo on the system and the (game and console) boxes will make the Chameleon immediately identifiable by millions of people right from the beginning.  In the end this is a good thing for all involved including us, our customers, our suppliers and distributors, our contract manufactures, potential retailers and probably most importantly to game developers.    Mark and Chris at River West/Coleco Holdings are also very behind this product and will be helping out in a variety of ways, beginning by inviting us into their booth at Toy Fair which is where they want to officially begin rebuilding this brand in more concrete ways.

We know we have a mountain to climb and are prepared to do what it takes to plant a flag at the top.  I will once again apologize to all of you for at times dissing some individuals and this community but it was hard being criticized by a group of my Atari and classic game lovin’ peers.  I let it get to me on occasion and I do regret all of it.  I am aware that we gave you all plenty to poke fun at and criticize but in the end, I believe the product will be much better for going through all of this.  In my mind, the best way for me to apologize once and for all is to ultimately create a game system that will make most of you turn a 180 and win over your support and positive influence.  And given the chance that is what I will do.

All I ask is moving forward into the New Year is you try and give the Chameleon a fair chance to stand on its own, and again forget about the past.  Let it speak for itself when we reveal it to you all early this New Year.  And finally, let’s respect one another and our opinions (some advice I am directing towards myself) and that goes for both believers and non-believers of what we are trying to do.  In the end, we all love and are passionate about video games and sometimes this passion causes us to do uncharacteristic things.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and I hope you all have a very Happy New Year!

    - Mike

  3. YAY ! A friend showed me this and thank goodness, anytime I see any variation of this particular rumor pop up I will simply link this article in response, wish I had this before my long reply above lol. Some sense in this article everyone should check out HERE:

Opinion: So about Project Dream and their Dreamcast 2 plans – calm down, it’s not official or sane

    And just for good measure.....

  4. It is nonsense and nothing more. :pile:  "Dreamcast 2" has been rumored to be coming out since it stopped selling at retail lol. Rendered images appear, click bait headlines working up fanboys in a frenzy and there is never, ever any real facts or information, just a lot of vague type rumors.

I don't know if it is done for attention, click bait or what. I swear these article writers get just the slightest bit of info and they take off with it, really seems to be like any rumor that starts off as one thing and just gains traction and snowballs into more and more nonsense. Everything posted in the original post is all derived from a rendered image, not even a particularly good one which was then added to a "change . org petition", you know those type of online petition anybody can knock off in 5 minutes? OH YES "our goal" is to get blah blah blah signatures, so what? Get 25000 signatures? DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU GET 10 MILLION, companies DO NOT WORK THAT WAY. Sega is NOT going to release a "new" console to support old games for a dead console. As for the proposed "kick starter", deciding you want something and making a kickstarter for it does not mean anything. Unless you are already in negotiations with the company and have a worked out an agreement then all you have done, at the most, is raise money. It would pretty much go like this......Hey SEGA I raised $$$$$$$$$$$$ through kickstarter, I want a Dreamcast 2! Sega responds "Uh, well that is nice however that is not our direction these days.....yeah we pretty much can barely release a decent Sonic title so yeah we are not interested in entering a console market already dominated by SONY / MICROSOFT / NINTENDO. We are pretty good at licensing our name / ip to cheap Atgames handhelds though so there's that...yeah........"

Sorry but it is just getting really annoying seeing this Dreamcast 2 or Sega returning to the console market nonsense over and over and over in Facebook groups, sites, forums. Fanboys getting worked up over the mere mention and buying into it because "It would be cool to have a new Sega console", yes, yes it would be cool, I would be first in line in fact but the reality is it is not happening but don't worry 2 weeks from now, 4 months, 1 year, every year friggin year, there will be more poor renderings, more rumors, more fanboy wishes and caviar dreams lol. Please let's not start such nonsense here, lets have one place where people apply logic and common sense, could we? PLEASE?  :P

  5. Seeing Arenafoot post that awesome Ed Fries interview prompted me to post this video I did 5 years ago. My look at Halo 2600 Homebrew!

  6. :mac_alert:  Just a heads up, I'm going to merge our Retro VGS conversation with this one and rename it Coleco Chameleon (formerly Retro VGS) It's all part of one larger conversation and should be in the same place.

Good idea, it really is just the same thing really.

I will look forward to see what they actually roll out at the TOYFAIR, someone should swing by and pull back the curtain to make sure it's not actually running off a PC (or maybe even a Jaguar lol) I hope they actually go about things the right way this time but they came back so fast and the fact they are allowing articles to out right lie and mislead people into thinking this is the same COLECO that was behind the ColecoVision when in fact it is nothing more than a name / ip does not instill confidence to me that anything will be different this time around.

    I guess we'll see.

  7. It's almost like they just grabbed whatever name they could get their hands on that had some retro market relevance and slapped the name on it.

THAT would be a lot closer to reality than what many are already being fooled into thinking...............

In the end I would LOVE to be proven totally wrong but I have eyes and ears all over and from my experience if I were a betting man I would NOT be putting any money on the odds of anything substantial coming of this.

I think retrovgs should follow zeinth's tv old slogan before announcing the product:

The Quality goes in before the Name goes on.

this is what maxrd is saying in general since they only have the name before the actual quality went in

Well put. People who are gobbling this up have no understanding of what these guys have done prior (or are missing much of the story) you we hear much hype, a lot of talk and discussion but in the end well...........wake me up when it can be purchased with some games and real support.......

  8. Seriously?! This is the best way they could have revived this!

"As of now our only glimpse at the new hardware comes in the form of product renders, but Coleco will be showing off the console for the first time at the New York Toy Fair in February." - The Verge

Will this new Coleco be the one to bring back the retro cartridge market?

Sadly this "NEW COLECO" is nothing more than a name. The brand / IP has been licensed by the RetroVGS Team. In other words don't get too excited yet

  9. With the RetroVGS "Team" behind it...what could go wrong? ^_^ Power goes in............

I will believe it when I see it, so far all we got from Mike and the RetroVGS Team is promises, renders, lot's of hype. To be clear Uhm, there is no "involvement" from Coleco, it is just a name now licensed out to the RetroVGS guys lol. They made a deal with River West Brands (a brand acquisition and enterprise development company ) to use the name. It literally is just the name and branding. They acquire and hold IP's for the primary purpose of licensing them, everything else is left up to the licensee.

Coming off as if "COLECO" is behind them when in fact there is no Coleco other than an IP and a name does not seem to be starting off on the right foot with me, whatever, we'll see I guess. I would love to be proven wrong and see something actually come of this BUT I suspect a repeat of the RetroVGS fiasco  ;)  :pile:

  10.   :mac_alert: ---------------------- RED ALERT! ATTENTION EVERYONE PLEASE -------------------------------  :mac_alert:

Well put LOST DRAGON, I was about to post similar but you summed it up well. I posted this thread A YEAR AGO and all was fine, no squabbling, no "suggesting" what people should do with it etc. If you don't like something here MOVE ON AND IGNORE IT, we don't need the "drama" or need to hear from someone new they want to "ignore" a topic, you are adults, participate or not, read or ignore, if you cannot post a supportive comment (a "veiled" supportive comment does not cut it) then just don't post anything. We have been trying in subtle (and not so subtle  ;) ) ways for about, oh 3 weeks or so now to get across the point of these forums, what is expected from participants, the community we are trying to nurture and that not only are we not like other forums but that the team here behind the scenes are ready to do what it takes to ensure drama coming from other forums will not be allowed to take foundation here. Leave the baggage from other forums at the door or you will be shown the door. This includes complaining about other forums, we don't want to be known as "that site" that bad mouths other forums as we have members that frequent them as well.  Enough is enough, it is not rocket science, nobody is asking you to sing praises of something you are not interested in or have a personal issue with some aspect of it, if that is the case simply don't post and move on. The way some people have been starting out here they are already on thin ice.

Lastly, to the point, I am well aware of the arguments, trolling, constant back and forth that goes on about all things "Jaguar" that went on in threads "elsewhere" and see that type of thing slowly infecting us here and that nonsense is simply is not going to be allowed. That's it, if anyone else goes on about it let's just say you will just be asking for more rope to hang yourself. Too many times people abuse the freedom of discussion on a site and a topic just spirals into petty squabbling and forceful opinions, we are seeing too much of that around here as of late. Knock it off, play nice or move on. This is the last word on this, a warning to all, if it continues by anyone privileges to post here will be revoked permanently. Geez people this isn't politics or religion or other hot button debate topics it's about Atari, gaming, programming, having fun, sharing resources WHY is it so hard for some people to not suck the fun out of every little thing? You have been warned - RANT MODE OFF.  :mac_bomb:

  11. Yes it does, it's a working partial game and I think it would have saved FMV tech and led to A-list interactive movies, and we might still have them today on Blue-ray and streaming video. I think hollywood would have stood up and taken notice in this case. Truely an unfortunate loss in  the technology, IMO.

unfortunately I have no way of making videos right now, but I would be happy to make you a copy if you have a Jag CD. it was freely distributed a number of years back on several Jaguar forums, it may still be online somewhere. Covers and everything were made up for it by fans. As a matter of fact, and I might be misremembering, but I think it was Clint Thompson had a hand in it's release, though, again, I might be misremembering that part, it might have been some one else. But he started this thread so he can confirm or deny. But I think there are other members who may have it and may be able to upload game-play video. Still, no problem to make a copy for you, or I could upload an ISO in a PM or something...whatever, I don't want to break any forum rules, but this isn't a pirate thing, it was legitimately released. Some Atari dealers may even sell it.

For starters I'll post some pics of it here.

There is also another tech demo available, IIRC, called 'the cave', not to be mixed up with the infamous 'Cave' Jag infomercial, and I know B&C sells copies of it, to at least check out the tech. But AH is much better with better actors and story, etc.

Oh no thanks for the offer but I have no JAGUAR equipment at least at this time, even being an Atari fan and having a fair size classic console / computer collection I just never ended up with anything Jaguar related, I will be honest, a year or so ago I kind of bumped it down on my priority list specifically because I had some annoying experiences in the Jaguar community and forums and yeah you guessed it over at Atariage, silly I know to be effected by such things but these days of course part of the fun of any system platform at least for me is discussing it sharing with the community (I am sure you get that lol) so I was kind of soured on it and pushed it down the list and than other things happened I wont get into that pretty much ensured I would not be getting into any new/old platforms anytime soon  BUT anyway I try to keep options open and look at things with a different perspective and screw what anyone else say / thinks.

As for FMV honestly, I quite like the genre, being from a time the industry just found they suddenly had dis format capacity and multimedia capabilities I think they all wanted to exploit but just really didn't know how to go about it perhaps in some ways it was too much too soon and ahead of it's time. While 3do titles like Plumbers Don't Wear Ties was a definite bad idea I really enjoyed things like Sewar Shark or PHANTASMAGORIA etc, I liked them a lot on 3DO as that system outside of a full blown multimedia PC offered the best visual quality.

Thanks for the info and pictures.  :thumb:
